Cairns Regional Council Visual Style and Writers Guide
2012DM#1571483
2What it means
The icon represents the Licuala ramsayi palm a beautiful,
tropical looking feature palm from our far north Queensland
rainforests and commonly found in the Cairns Regional
Council area.
The irregular lines of the palms leaves are a depiction
of the relaxed lifestyle of Tropical North Queensland.
The green upper leaf shape represents the mountain range
and rainforest-clad coastline of the Cairns and Douglas
regions; and the lower blue leaf elements represent the ocean
and the Great Barrier Reef.
The black centrepiece symbolises the vibrancy
and vitality of our tropical community.
The meaning behind our brand
The graphic blue/green representation of the Licuala Fan Palm leaf is now synonymous with Cairns Regional Council.

5Master logo configurations
Our logo features the native Licuala (or fan) palm reflecting our tropical lifestyle, our connection with the environment and a dynamic and festive spirit, and depicts our region as one that has embraced sustainability.
Electronic versions of the master logo can be found in E:\LOGOS\Cairns Regional Council
Logo formats
Our logo consists of two elements, the palm symbol
and our text, or logotype. To ensure immediate recognition of the logo through consistent presentation, it is important to preserve a precise spatial and size relationship between the
palm symbol and the logotype.
There are three acceptable configurations, as shown here.
The main logo is a stacked version and is to be used across all collateral including stationery,
and in preference to the other configurations wherever
possible.
The horizontal formats are intended for material where
maximum logo size is required in areas of limited depth, and can be aligned left with other
elements on the page.
Our logo must not be redrawn or typeset or otherwise
altered in any way, but instead reproduced from the master
logo files.
Do not change the logos colour. Do not place the full colour logo on a patterned background or contrasting
block colour.
Main logo stacked Horizontal logo short
Horizontal logo long
Prohibited variations and usage: DO NOT PRESENT THE LOGO IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING FORMATS

Electronic versions of the single colour master logos can be found in E:\LOGOS\Cairns Regional Council
Single colour white Only to be used as a reverse format on images or textures. Other single colour variations are prohibited.

Clearspace corporate logos
In order to maintain the integrity of our identity, it must
not be crowded by other elements.
For that reason, a clearspace has been defined. Type or any
graphic element, or the edge of the page, may not intrude into
this area.
The outer line around each logo defines this area, and is
measured by the height of the letter C in Cairns.
Minimum clearspace
To present our identity in the best light, a clearspace must always be maintained. No graphic or textual content should fall within this zone, preventing visual clutter from diluting the value and impact of our identity.
Master logo Horizontal logos
11
Use in conjunction with other logos
Where collaborative or joint ventures require more than
one logo to be printed on any material, the Cairns Regional
Council logo should be in equal or larger size and prominence to the partner or co-sponsor
organisation. Councils logo should not be smaller or any less prominent than any other logos.
Be sure to adhere to any logo specifications of the
partner or co-sponsor, and obtain all necessary approvals
as prescribed in the terms and conditions of the project
contract or agreement.
Note: these rules apply to the corporate logo and
all Business Unit logos.
Use in conjunction with other logos
To present our identity in the best light in conjuction with other logos when used in collaborative or joint venture circumstances, the Cairns Regional Council logo must appear at the same size or larger than the other logos used.
Example #1 for illustration purposes only [use of larger Cairns Regional Council logo in comparison to other joint venture logos]
Example #2 for illustration purposes only [where all logos appear at same size - both Cairns Regional Council identity and other joint vernture logos]

This project has been made possible with funding provided by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
12
Corporate and department logos
In order to accurately reproduce our identity, it must
adhere to certain size and proportion standards.
Our Corporate logos have different size specifications for full colour CMYK and
single colour use, whereas our Department logos
have the same minimum size specifications across all
reproductions.
The same sizing constraints apply to the reverse colour
logos as does the single colour logos shown here across both the Corporate and
Department logos.
Note: The Department logo sizes are larger to ensure that the
department name can be read.
At no time are the logos to appear elongated, stretched
to fit, missing elements or words distortion to the
configuration and proportion of all the Corporate, Department
and Business Unit logos are strictly prohibited.
Minimum sizes and proportions
To maintain integrity and legibility of our identity, the logo must never appear any smaller than the minimum size stipulated in these guidelines or in any other proportions than listed below. Distortion in any way to the corporate logo, department logos or business unit logos is strictly prohibited.
The department logo sizes shown here apply to ALL departments.

What is the safest way to dispose of an old car battery?Used or old Lead Acid Batteries do not belong in either of your wheelie bins.
Batteries are recyclable (due to the lead content) and also extremely hazardous (due to the sulphuric acid content). Lead acid batteries, commonly used in cars, 4WDs, motor-cycles, boats etc, are actually 98% recyclable, but any used lead acid batteries that end up in household rubbish and your green-lid wheelie bin, can contaminate the organic waste recycling stream at the SITA Bedminster and render the organic compost un-useable.
Many retailers selling car batteries will also take old batteries for recycling - so please check with your nearest battery store to see if they will take your old battery. Alternatively you can drop your old battery off at your nearest Council Transfer Station for free. The used batteries are then sent on to the appropriate recycling facilities for processing.

Improvement Works update:Abbott street streetscape works: Council will remove and replace median trees along Abbott Street (between Aplin and Shields sts) from 26 March 2012. The first project under the City Centre Master Plan, this work includes removal of existing trees and replanting with six fig trees into irrigated, landscaped median islands. Median parking will be reconfigured to create an additional two carpark spaces. Works due for completion by late-April 2012, weather permitting.
sewer maintenance: Annual sewer system maintenance works are under way to substantially reduce the risk of sewer overflows occurring during high rainfall periods. This important annual works program helps protect wastewater treatment plant infrastructure. Sewer networks within the CBD are being assessed on a rolling schedule and should be completed by June 2012, weather permitting. Contractors may need to enter properties and access manholes to carry out the work. Residents and businesses will be contacted prior to coordinate access and address any concerns.
Marlin Coast pipeline: The Marlin Coast Recycled Water Distribution Pipeline is being constructed on Dunne Road to Yorkeys Knob Road, across Yorkeys Knob Road, alongside the eastern side of Yorkeys Knob Road and Varley Street to Evans Street and Ray Street. No disruptions to water supply services are planned during construction, but there may be some minor localised traffic interruptions. Traffic may be reduced to one lane under traffic control during working hours and the speed limit will be temporarily reduced to 40kph when workers and plant are operating within 1.2m of traffic lanes. Works are due for completion in June 2012.
Council thanks you for your patience and co-operation during these improvement works. For further information, contact Council on 4044 3044 or email [email protected].

Working to protect cassowariesInstallation of new signage at Bramston BeachNew road signage will be trialled on Bramston Beach Road in an effort to reduce the impact of traffic on cassowary numbers. New, highly reflective signage will be positioned at three sites along the road, with three different designs used to catch drivers attention and maximise awareness of the potential risks of colliding with a cassowary. A large community-based sign to be positioned on the approach to Bramston Beach village will feature changing messages about cassowaries, and will help notify road users of recent cassowary sightings in the area. Regular roadside mowing will also help to maximise visibility at the identified high-risk locations. Council will monitor these new measures over a twelve-month trial period, to gauge the effectiveness in reducing the cassowary road toll.

Business unit logos
Working with the master brand
Each of Cairns Regional Councils business units utilises
the colour palette, fonts and fan palm icon of the master brand.
With the exception of Cairns Libraries, each logo also has
the identifier Carins Regional Council sitting underneath
their name.
A range of logos have been designed for various Cairns Regional Council business units. While every business unit bears a close resemblance to the corporate logo, each also has its own distinctive look and feel which will be outlined on the following pages. Cairns Regional Council has several business
units including Cairns Works, Cairns Botanic Gardens, Cairns Libraries, Cairns Esplanade, Civic Theatre and Tanks Arts Centre.

Logo formats
The Cairns Libraries logo usually appears with both
a URL and tagline in its composition.
To ensure a consistent relationship between all
elements, the logo must not be redrawn or typeset or
otherwise altered in any way, but instead reproduced from
the master logo files.
The Cairns Libraries identity differs from the other business units in that has both a tagline and a URL as part of its logo, rather than the the words Cairns Regional Council. It also has an additional colour in its palette.

Two colour logos have been created for use across most of the Libraries applications
including stationery and mechandise such as library bags,
banners, pens and stickers.
Where only one PMS colour is available, the tagline would
appear in the same colour as the logo, rather than in a
contrasting colour as shown here.
Single colour black logos have been created for use in black and white print applications
such as newspaper advertisements.
All three configurations of the logo may also be reversed out of either Blue, Green or Black (block shapes are examples of
background colour only there is no box around the logo).
The Cairns Libraries logo rarely appears in full colour as per the previous page, rather it appears in two colours as demonstrated below. The use of bold colours allows us to create more impact with our identity.

to reverse it out of a solid background colour. This
allows greater flexibility when designing collateral, as a colour
can be chosen to suit the dominant colour in the imagery,
bringing the piece to life.
All other rules must be oserved, such as clearspace
and minimum sizes.
To portray Cairns Esplanade as a venue with a difference, a dynamic colour palette can be used on collateral. Our dynamic spirit and energy should come through every piece of collateral we design, and to that end there is some flexibilty with the use of our logo.
DO
Reverse out of a solid colour with sufficient contrast.Use vibrant colours to represent our spirit and identity.Observe the clearspace rules.
DONT
Use colours with insufficent contrast

Minimum sizes and clearspace
Clearspace
In order to maintain the integrity of our identity, it must
not be crowded by other elements.
For that reason, a clearspace has been defined. Type or any
graphic element, or the edge of the page, may not intrude into
this area.
The outer line around each logo defines this area, and is
measured by the height of the letter E in
Esplanade.
Minimum sizes
In order to accurately reproduce our identity, it must
adhere to certain size standards. The same sizing constraints
apply to the single colour and reverse colour logos as does
the single colour logos shown here across both the Corporate
and Department logos.
To maintain integrity and legibility of our identity, the logo must never appear any smaller than the minimum size stipulated here, and a clearspace must always be maintained as demonstrated below.
