FUN facts
In galvanized steel, when the steel starts to corrode after the coating has been scratched, the zinc in the coating will undergo a single replacement reaction with the steel, forming zinc ions and iron atoms. Rust would be converted back to iron, in other words.
Another example occurred in the Statue of Liberty. The outer layers of the statue are made of copper, but the inner support was made of steel. When the copper started to react with air, forming a verdigris coating, a single replacement reaction caused the iron to convert the copper back to copper metal; the iron started to rust, and the entire inner support had to be replaced in the 1980s.
