While many choose to spend the Easter weekend with family or friends, there were quite a few children’s activities going on as well. Megan, one of the librarians at The Children’s Library, was able to tell us about The Bunny Hop at the Chil-dren’s Library on Saturday.

Kids who attended the Bunny Hop put their searching skills to the test looking for eggs hid-den throughout the library. Once all the eggs were found, the kids got down to business sorting through the letters hidden inside to reveal the hol-iday words! After a quick search for a few missing letters (including a well-hidden ‘G’) the kids tried out the other games and activities, including deco-rating an egg that had a chick pop out of it! Thank

you to everyone who came out to have some Easter fun at the Children’s Library!

With spring finally “really” here, many of us are eager-ly awaiting summer, as the weather continues there is plenty more happening at The Children’s Library :

On Tuesday May 6th the library will be hosting story-teller Leigh-Anne Kehler as part of the TD Children’s Book Week Tour! We encourage both kids and adults to come out and enjoy this experience as Leigh-Anne uses folktales from around the world to tell her stories! The annual Tea and Fashion Show will be held in the Richards Landing Town Hall to support the Children’s Library on Saturday, May 11th. Tickets to this delight-ful afternoon are available now at Moose Sweats!

The Children’s Library will once again be collecting clothing and soft goods at Kent’s Corner. We’re collect-ing everything from clothes, linens, bedding, luggage, hats, boots and belts. At the end of the collection the entire stack of goods will be weighed and the library will

receive a corresponding donation! What a great way to keep our unwanted items out the landfills and help the library at the same time!

The “Get Caught Reading” Program will return to the Children’s Library in May. Children who are ‘caught reading’ by the librarian at the library will receive a ballot for prizes in the final draw at the end of the month. Last year more than 100 ballots were dropped into the ballot box by readers who quietly showed off their library skills by either reading independently or to others! We hope to pass that number this year as we pass out ballots for the grand prize of a Coles gift card! Good luck and happy reading!

We sometimes read on social media, or hear people comment that there is nothing to do in our community. “Why doesn’t the Township do something about it? What ever happened to this annual event or that activity...?”

You may not realise it, but there are a lot of ac-tivities and events for various age groups, in most cases run by small groups of dedicated volunteers. Activities such as concert series and art shows, sports and seniors’ programming, and newer an-nual events such as the Go North Music Festival. That doesn’t mean there is something that specifi-cally interests you or your family and friends, but there are always opportunities to help make new things happen. However, if you want your munic-ipality to help, we need to hear from you.

If you have ever thought there should be more to do on St. Joseph Island, come the this month’s Mayor’s meeting on Monday April 29th at 7pm at the municipal office at 1669 Arthur Street, Rich-ards Landing. Mayor Jody Wildman would like to hear your concerns and discuss your ideas.

The 49th Annual Maple Syrup Festival Continues This Weekend!

THIS COMING WEEKEND, April 9 and 10, the Royal Cana-dian Legion Branch 374 on St. Joseph Island will again behosting the 49th Annual Maple Syrup Festival in RichardsLanding.

Every year, the festival serves thousands of “all you can eat”pancakes and sausages topped with sticky and sweet St.Joseph Island maple syrup to residents from Wawa to Sud-bury and everywhere in between. This treat is available forjust $9/adult, $8/senior, and $5/child under 12. The 2016 fes-tival includes many of the usual features including localMaple Syrup Producer booths with a variety of syrups, can-dies and sugars. Craft vendors and local organization infor-mation tables are favourites with the regular patrons. Theyearly $1000 prize raffle tickets will also be for sale.

This year, the festival is privileged to include a few specialguests: Central Algoma Secondary School’s History Club, the49th Field Regiment, RCA and Sault Ste. Marie & AlgomaDistrict CUPE Council. The History Club will be selling“trench cakes.” Funds raised will be donated to the VimyRidge Foundation. April 9th is Vimy Ridge Day but dona-tions will be accepted up until May 31st.

Not everyone has a “support group” present within their community. Maybe their close family members and friends have moved to other towns or cities. Maybe they have died. For whatever reason, many seniors are left with a very small “community of care” or perhaps not even one at all.

The Parish of St. Joseph & St. George is very excited to announce that we working towards repairing the broken circle of care that many people face as they age. We will be having a “Games Afternoon for Seniors (50+)” on the first Wednesday of every month, 1-3pm, at the Legion in Richards Landing (the Lounge). This will bring people together to chat while playing board games, card games, or while simply just “hanging out”. You can enjoy a mug of coffee or a cup of tea along with some sweet treats.

The Legion has graciously given us the use of their lounge for our gathering and we are very thankful for this gift. We look forward to seeing you there. I am writing to inform people of the impact the recent 50% budget cuts to Southern Ontario Library Services (SOLS) and Ontario Library Services North (OLSN), announced in the Ontario budget for 2019-2020, could have on rural libraries across northern Ontario.

“As a result of the reduced budget that OLSN is facing in the 2019-2020 fiscal year we are no longer able to provide postage reimbursement to our client libraries. The SOLS has announced today that regular inter-library loan delivery service will permanently cease effective April 26, 2019. Interlibrary loan service is suspended province wide until further notice and we are asking that all Ontario libraries return borrowed inter library loan materials to their owning libraries as soon as possible.”*

Interlibrary loans is only one of the services these budget cuts will have on the Island’s public librar-ies. They will likely impact the provincial operating grants, Overdrive services, internet costs, client library training and professional support. For example the St. Joseph Township Public Library has approxi-mately 800 books in its collections. In 2018 180 inter-library books were requested by patrons. This service allowed us to expand our collection by 25% without purchasing any books or overcrowding our limited shelf space.

Personally, I see these budget cuts as a lack of concern for the important role libraries play in rural areas. In addition, it is another provincially funded service indiscriminately downloaded onto rural municipal governments.

North American river otter

North American river otters are members of the weasel family found along rivers and coasts of North America. Here on the island we’ve seen them at Gawas Bay and Whiskey Bay especially this time of year when they can be found diving in and out of the thin layers of ice on the water that still have not melted from the winter.

Otters will nest in burrows created by other animals such as beavers and foxes, underground along the waterways usually with one tunnel that enters under the water. Here, females will give birth to their litters of kits which are born blind and toothless. They are sensitive to pollution, however, and will leave an area if it is too polluted.

They eat mostly fish but will also eat amphibians, crayfish, mussels, freshwater clams, snails and small turtles. They can stay under water for up to four minutes, waiting to ambush prey. Smaller fish can be eaten on the surface of the water, but they will take larger fish to the shore to consume. Otters are most active during dawn and dusk, becoming more nocturnal in the spring, summer and fall and diurnal during the winter. If there is a food shortage in winter, otters may migrate.

Predators to the otter include bobcats, cougars, black bears, coyotes, wolves, red foxes and domestic dogs. Aquatic predators are the American alligator, American crocodile and killer whales, though otters here don’t have to worry when out in the water (we hope at least, haha).

St. Joseph Island Hunters and Anglers Association Hosts 2nd Annual Gun and Outdoor Show, Sunday, May 5, Des-barats

Central Algoma – Building on last year’s success, the St. Joseph Island Hunters and Anglers are moving their 2nd Annual Gun and Outdoor Show to a new and larger location at the Johnson Township Community Centre (JTCC) Arena in Desbarats, on Sunday, May 5, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is by donation. The event is sponsored by John-son Township Recreation, SK Group, and Quaker Boy.

Club president John Paterson is anticipating a lot of in-terest in this year’s show: “We have over 80 vendor tables inside the JTCC Arena. While many of our sellers are local, we also have vendors coming from other parts of the north. There’ll be shooting accessories, camping and hiking sup-plies, hunting and fishing equipment, zip-lining, and other outdoor pursuits. Something for everyone.”

Paterson himself is eager to sit in on the free seminars on hunting and fishing. “Having professional speakers makes us different from most other gun and outdoor shows,” says Paterson. “This year we have Gord Ellis coming from Thun-der Bay. Gord’s a senior editor with Ontario Out-of-Doors magazine, a CBC Radio outdoor columnist, and a member of the Fishing Hall of Fame. We are also excited to have award-winning professional photographer and well-known outdoors writer James Smedley coming from Wawa. Mr. Smedley’s hunting, fishing, and travel adventures appear in numerous magazines and newspapers.”

Paterson goes on to say that, “Conservation Officers will be on hand as well to talk about compliance and enforcement, and answer questions. And tournament anglers Jason Doy-on and Shane Turcotte will be sharing their experiences. It’ll be a day of entertainment and education.”

Archery is another feature of this year’s show. There will be vendors on-hand as well as an interactive archery shoot for people of all ages to try out the equipment. According to Judy Ingram of Nottingham North 3D Archery, “Archery is a great sport for just about anyone. Whether you hunt or not, target shooting can be a lot of fun. Like golf, it get’s you out doing something, encourages you to improve your own game, and is a great opportunity for socializing.” Local ar-chery coach and competitor Lana Perry describes archery as “A metaphor for life. It develops stamina and core strength. It teaches the benefits of practice, focus, patience, discipline, recovery from mistakes, and the satisfaction of self-improve-ment. And of course, it’s a lot of fun too!”

Numerous draws will give everyone a chance at prizes throughout the day. Outdoor exhibits round out the show, giving visitors a chance to view, learn about, or buy the lat-est in ATVs, marine and boating, campers, and trailers.
