JULY 28-29, 2018 - SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Give it to the people to eat.” (2Kgs 4:42)
When asked what kind of funeral he wanted for himself, the Master said, “Leave my body in a desert place and do not bother to dig a grave, so earth and sky will be my coffin, the moon and stars my funeral lamps, and all creation the funeral flowers.” “We’d rather cremate your body,” said the disciples. “That would be too much trouble,” said the Master. “And why deprive the kites and ants of a funeral banquet?” (Awakening, Anthony De Mello) In love, when you have nothing left to give, you give your-self. In time of most need, love has the opportunity to manifest its most profound desire for the loved. Jesus said of Himself: “I am the Good Shepherd, who gives His own life to feed the sheep.” (John 10:11). “No one has greater love than the One Who lays down His own life for His friends.” (John 15:13) Giving food to the poor is the most traditional of Christian charities. This is the act of worship that best proclaims the Kingdom of God. This act of feeding the poor is highly theological, since it is the act of Christ, the Son of the Living God. It does not stop at mate-rial provision; it aims at changing the hearts of men and women who are called to bring the Kingdom of Heaven down to earth: “May Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” The true miracle of the multiplication of bread that Jesus per-formed is that this prepares His disciples and the people to under-stand that they can do the same thing for one another, and that, even when they have nothing to give, they can give themselves. When love truly reigns in the heart, the Kingdom of God appears. Fr. Peter Truong
