Building a Regular Flossing Habit

We all know that flossing is the superstar of dental hygiene. As we discussed in previous articles, flossing removes harmful plaque, improves your smile, relieves bad breath symptoms and even gives a boost to your general health So why is it that despite knowing all this, many of us still forget to floss? Whatever the precise answer to this question may be, anyone can build a solid flossing routine with a little bit of effort. In this article, we share some tips on how you can go about it.

1. Keep Flossing: Until recently, common belief had it that 21 days was sufficient to build a new habit. However, recent research suggests that it may take up to 66 days to form a new habit that actually lasts. When it comes to flossing, it’s therefore essential that you keep doing it until the process becomes automatic. Give yourself 2 months and you may stop needing to think about it!

2. Place Floss Somewhere Visible: Far too many people keep their floss supplies in an obscure corner of their bathroom. No wonder you forget! While you are trying to establish this new habit, you need to have flossing on your mind. Put your floss somewhere prominent. Next to your toothbrush is a solid bet as you’ll be reminded every time you brush. Alternatively, if you set your alarm clock before sleeping, you could place your floss on top of it as a daily reminder!

3. Keep Track of Your Success: You should keep a record of your flossing success. This will help to remind yourself that you are getting better. The occasional slip-up will not be as damaging when you can see the overall positive trend. A pen and paper will do, but if you are more electronically inclined then there are several mobile apps that allow you to keep track of success streaks.

Overall, we can state that building a flossing habit is no different from other positive life changes. Take it one day at a time and persist until the positive habit becomes ingrained. You can do it!
