Despite the fact that Brits are renowned for their impeccable manners, research sug-gests saying “Thank You” is fast becoming a thing of the past.

That’s because one in three of us now opts for the less formal ‘Cheers’ and other ‘Thank You’ alternatives commonly used include: ‘ta’, ‘merci’, ‘nice one’ and ‘cool’.

But it’s not all bad news for sticklers of good manners -- it was also found that average person will say thank you nearly 5,000 times a year.

And 95% of those surveyed claim manners are important to them while eight in ten Brits believe their own etiquette is spot on.

However, 73% of Brits also reveal that the reasoning behind why they say ‘thank you’ is because they were brought up to do so rather than being genuinely grateful.A spokesperson for Food Network, which commissioned the research said: “When it comes to saying ‘thank you’, people will always find the way that works best for them and it’s interesting to see what the act means to different people. “The fact that more than a quarter of us choose to say thank you through food high-lights that taking the time and effort to say ‘thanks’ is still very important to us.”

World’s worst football team win... after 17 years

Pilot locks himself in loo-- prompts terror scare

Man drags piano up mountain serenades elephants

SOURCE: NEWSLITE.TV

SOURCE: NEWSLITE.TV SOURCE: NEWSLITE.TV

American Samoa -- ranked as the worst inter-national football team in the world -- have fi-nally won their first game… after 17 years of trying.

The US protectorate have previously suffered some embarrassing loses -- including a 31-0 thrashing by 31-0 and are bottom of Fifa’s rank-ings.

But following 30 straight defeats the team have this week managed to get a 2-1 victory over Tonga.

Reports say the players and coach reacted to the win like they’d just won the Premiership, Champions League and World Cup all at the same time.

However, coach Thomas Rongen isn’t getting carried away and described the win as “part of soccer history” okay maybe he was getting car-ried away.

The captain of a flight from North Carolina to New York has caused a terror scare -- by accidentally locking himself in the toilet.

Fighter jets were even put on alert after the captain of the Chatau-qua Airlines flight disappeared to the loo and didn’t come back.

And what made it worse was that the co-pilot became suspicious when the captain sent a foreign-sounding passenger to the cock-pit to explain the situation.

“The captain disappeared. What I’m being told is he’s stuck in the toilet and someone with a thick foreign accent is giving me a pass-word to access the cockpit,” the co-pilot said to air traffic control. However, it didn’t quite get to the point of the plane being shot from the sky -- the captain eventually got out of the toilet and land-ed the aircraft.

A mad-capped pianist has dragged his piano up a mountain in Kanchanaburi, Thailand to serenade a group of blind elephants. As you do.

50-year-old Brit Paul Barton -- who played Slow Movement 2 from Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata for the beasts -- made the odd bid in order to raise money for charity.

He says he hopes to raise enough money to install an electric fence at the sanctuary where the injured and handicapped ele-phants live.

Barton was also quick to point out that the keys on his piano were made from synthetic plastic and that no elephants were injured for the making of his music.

It was a sound which greet-ed millions of computer us-ers and is forever associated with Microsoft Windows -- but this theme was com-posed on a Mac.

Music legend Brian Eno has recently described the process of being hired by Microsoft to create a selec-tion of possible themes for Windows 95.

Speaking on BBC’s The Museum of Curiosity Eno said the he was given a list of adjectives which the four second piece should con-vey -- including inspirational, sexy, driving, provocative and nos-talgic.

Then he revealed that he used an Apple Mac to knock up 83 piec-es for Microsoft to choose from before adding the kicker.

A doctor in Germany has apparently been sued by a patient after playing a vuvuzela in front of his practice.

The patient claims that during the South African World Cup last summer, the doctor played the an-noying instrument near her, causing ear trauma.

She is now demanding £4,500 in damages and £700 in compen-sation and a civil suit is being heard at a court in Augsburg this week.

The woman -- who was already suffering from tinnitus -- had been offered £1,700 in damages, but is holding out for more.

Well either that or she didn’t hear the doctor make her the offer.

Pee-controlled video game fitted in pub urinalsSOURCE: NEWSLITE.TV

It’s more pee than Wii for gamers at a bar in London -- where urine-controlled video games have been installed in their toilets.

Loo-goers at the Exhibit Bar in Balham get to play games -- including askiing game and a quiz -- every time they go to the toilet.

Users (men only) aim their pee in the spe-cially-crafted urinals to control the games which are displayed on LCD screens mount-ed above.

Bar bosses hope the games will not only at-tract new customers, but that regulars will drink more in order to play longer and set news high scores.

‘Machine Gun Fellatio’ or ‘MGF’ was an Australian alternative rock band, formed in 1997. They were well-

known for their provocative on-stage antics and humorous lyrics, as well as the musical merit of their songs.

Their outrage-provoking name (apparently coined after being spotted in some graffiti) gives some idea of

the attitude that pervades the band’s work. They released three studio albums, three EPs, and three singles

before breaking up in 2005. Cafe de Burse is currently playing some of their hits such as ‘Rollercoaster’ and

‘Pussy Town’ so come on down and enjoy their unique sound!

De HooiHi everybody!

I made Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. Didn’t even realize it was Thanksgiving until I opened up Facebook. Rode my bi-cycle to the store and bought a 13 pound frozen turkey. You’re supposed to let the turkey thaw in the refrigerator for a few days but I didn’t have a few days. I found out through the beloved internet that I could just throw it in the oven frozen, it would just take longer to cook and once things stated thawing out you have to take the giblets out. It actually finished sooner than I thought it would and I al-most burned it because of that.

Then once I finished cooking, my oven was smoking under the grill. I guess I evicted a rat that was making house under there. My girlfriend took the top off the stove when I was in the shower to see why it was smoking and a baby rat jumped out at her. The maid was holding a broom and swatted the rat right out of the air killing it. It’s amazing how many rats live around here. I go through about a dozen of those sticky rat traps a month and the dogs usually have a gift for us about once a week.

But after that drama we all had a drink and tucked into the food. The turkey was cooked perfectly, the gravy was a little bitter because I burnt the drippings but I didn’t notice, the cherry pie was yummy, and I was surprised to see the kids enjoying my sauerkraut and brat-wurst. Does anybody else have sauerkraut for Thanksgiving? We also had stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberries as that’s the tradi-tion. Basically it’s the same as Christmas dinner.

Speaking of Christmas dinner, De Hooi will be having Christmas dinner available on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Tiss the season to be jolly. Fa la lalala, la la, la la. Now we dawn our gay apparel? What the what? Christmas dinner at De Hooi will be similar to what I men-tioned above. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries and a French onion soup. Yum yum. Man I’m hungry, think I’ll check the fridge for leftovers… Crap, nothing but cold stuffing. Stuffing is actually my favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner but not cold. I really need to buy a microwave.

Anyway Happy Holidays and thanks for making De Hooi Southern Jakarta’s favorite beer joint.

Peace,

Harry

Drinking and DrivingI would like to share an experience with you about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years. A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends and had a few too many beers and some rather nice claret. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I’ve never done before - I took a bus home. I arrived back safely and without incident which was a real surprise since I had never driven a bus before and am not sure where I got this one.

14 BuGils Bi-Weekly - Issue #46 - November 30, 2011

This edition’s staff interview features Ari, who recently welcomed her second child!

Hi Arie, congratulations on your new ‘toy’. Can you tell me more about him? Thanks! The ‘toy’ is actually my newly born cute baby boy.

How does it feel to go back to work and leave your baby at home after a three-month leave? I feel a bit guilty, but I always try to do my best to make up for it. I always breastfeed him despite my work and make sure that he’s taken care of.

What do you think about our new Kids’ Room in EP? Do you like it?Yes, I think the new Kids’ Room is really nice. Maybe someday I’ll take my kid to play there.

You’re going to be in charge of the Kids’ Room. What are you going to do with all the kids? I don’t know if I can handle so many of them at one time, but I can try (laughs)

M0607Carte Tres Curieuse De La Mer Du Sud Contenant Des Remarques Nouvelles Et Tres Utiles Non Seulement Sur Les Ports et Isles de Cette Mer.

Henri Chatelain, Amsterdam, Circa 1719.

Size: 56 x 31 inches. Spectacular 4 sheet map centred on America and showing the various trade and exploration routes in the Pacific and Atlantic.

Chatelain’s “very curious map” is one of the most spectacular examples of the marriage between cartography and graphic art. Richly decorated in the tradition of Dutch cartography, this map extends from eastern Asia to western Europe, with primary emphasis on the Pacific Ocean and the Americas.

The map was included in the landmark work of Henri Abraham Chatelain, a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins, lived successively in London, The Hague, and then Amsterdam. This “very curious” map was included in the 7 volume Atlas Historique, published between 1705 and 1720. This encyclopedic work was devoted to the history and genealogy of the continents, discussing such topics as geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and ethnography. Although published anonymously, it was apparently compiled by Chatelain or his family, and the text was contributed by Nicolas Gueudeville, a French geographer.

The map appeared in the sixth volume, the map provides an amazing graphical depiction of the age of discovery and the character of the New World. The map included more than 35 insets and vignettes of various scenes and regions in the New World. Nine medallions at the top centre portrayed important explorers including Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, Drake, and Dampier, while the tracks of their voyages were marked on the map. The marginal vignettes range from narrative scenes depicting colonial economies based on beaver, cod, and sugar to geographic insets providing large-scale maps of significant locations, such as the Mississippi delta, Niagara Falls, the Cape of Good Hope, as well as numerous cities and towns. Although California was depicted as an island on this map, there was a notation indicating that some Europeans believed it was attached to the mainland, making this one of the first European maps to question the myth of California as an island as depicted on many Dutch and English maps since the 1630s. Gorgeous full color example.
