PURPOSE: Child abuse and neglect is a preventable community health problem. The data from 2014‐2015 indicates that in Jackson County there were 21.6 incidents of child maltreatment per 1000 children, compared to 12.1/1000 in Oregon and 9.4/1000 nationally. The ability for medical and non‐medical professionals to recognize the physical signs and patterns of abuse is critical, and potentially life‐saving. Severe cases of physical abuse with early presenting signs have been missed in our community. The field of Child Abuse and Neglect is constantly evolving, and requires any professional who has contact with vulnerable children in our community to stay current on the latest research and recommendations on the recognition, evaluation, and care of abused children.
