BRINNON AREA NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2016
WANTED: SUPPER/SOUP MANAGER OR TEAM FOR 2017
When OlyCap decided to not continue serving meals in the Com-munity Center, the Senior Organization stepped up and took over the function. The Organization serves soup twice a week (Monday and Friday) and Supper on Wednesdays. Groups of people have shared the responsibility of continuing this service over the years. NOW, however, those who have been involved will be leaving. (It is a big job that requires endless hours of volunteerism.) If you can volunteer to take on this job or know someone, please let Bob Hart know. He is the president of the Senior Organization. The position needs to be filled in January.
Veterans Day is an official United States Federal holi-day that is observed annually on November 11, honor-ing people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It coincides with other holi-days including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the end of World War 1. Major hostilities of that war formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Please thank a Veteran for his/her service!
REMEMBER TO VOTE BY NOVEMBER 8TH. MANY NATIONAL AND LOCAL ELECTIONS, INCLUDING THE LOCAL PARKS AND REC

Brinnon School Students in Grades 3-8 Visit Taylor Shellfish in Shelton
Tom Bettinger, Director of International Sales and a Brinnon resident, arranged a guided tour of the facility. Students observed the many dif-ferent types of shellfish that are shipped all over the world. The students especially enjoyed watching the oyster shucking process. The guides shared the many career opportunities available at Taylor Shellfish, ranging from sum-mer jobs for high school students and executive jobs in the business department. Thank you to Taylor Shellfish and Tom Bettinger!
A few of the Middle School Students decided to test the giant warehouse scale, shown in the
picture above.
NEW ENGLAND POTATO SOUP
1 med. onion, chopped 3 ribs celery, diced
2 T butter or margarine
1 can chicken broth (14 1/2 oz.)
3 med. potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 1/2 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. dried rosemary, crushed
1/2 tsp. dried thyme 1/4 tsp. pepper
1/3 C flour 2 1/2 C milk, divided **
1 1/2 C cubed fully cooked ham
1 C frozen peas
In a saucepan, sauté onions & celery in butter until tender. Add broth, pota-toes, sugar, salt, rosemary, thyme and pepper ; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 15-20 min. or un-til potatoes are tender. Combine flour & 1/2 C milk to make a rue and gradually add to soup. Bring to a boil & cook for 2 min. stirring constantly. Stir in ham, peas and remaining milk; heat thor-oughly. Yield 6-7 servings.
Note: This soup is not white in color but on the “brownish” side due to spices.
**To make a “creamier” base, use ei-ther liquid whipping cream or half and half for 1/2 of the milk requirement. It freezes well and great on a cold winter night

PREPARING FOR WINTER
Fire Chief Tim Manly wants to remind us to be care-ful walking on icy areas. There are numerous products on the market to help melt the ice. Keep it outside the door so it is handy to use.
Remember to cover vulnerable water/irrigation pipes and valves.
If you have to park your car outside make sure your coolant systems are serviced and your car battery is in good shape. Check your wipers , the rubber on them may be worn. A good suggestion is to use 2/3 isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and 1/3 water in a spray bot-tle. Use the spray to remove ice from your windshield.
