Boxer Books is celebrating its first 10 years – and like any 10 year-old, we intend to celebrate our special birthday in a BIG way!
Over the past 10 years Boxer has grown and developed, and worked with the most incredible creative talent, publishing simultaneously in both the UK, USA and Canada. We launched Sebastien Braun and Britta Teckentrup, published Jonathan Allen’s million-selling Baby Owl series, introduced a stunning new collection from one of Britain’s favourite authors, Jane Ray, and brought Toon Tellegen’s stories to life in English and bejewelled them with extraordinary art by Jessica Ahlberg. Nicola Smee’s Clip-Clop was chosen as one of the 50 best picture books published in the past 25 years and we garnered the Marsh award for translation. Not bad for a new kid! And this year we introduce another new and very special author, Lisa Stubbs, with Lily and Bear. Be prepared – this is BRILLIANT!
This catalogue is a celebration of all our extraordinary talent and our wonderful titles – all of our board books, picture books and fiction. Look out for our special author interviews and biographies, and all the stunning new titles coming out in 2015.
So happy birthday to Boxer Books and very sincere thanks to everyone involved in creating, producing, publicising, administering, selling and supporting our first 10 years!

What’s your favourite children’s book? There is no way I can narrow it down to just one. I love all the classics:Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr and The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
What’s your favourite song? My favourite ‘feel-good dance-around-the-kitchen-when-no-one-is-looking’ songs are: ‘Skindo Le Le’ by Alive! ‘Don't Stop Me Now’ by Queen, ‘I Got Life’ by Nina Simone, ‘Oh Happy Day’ by the Edwin Hawkins Singers and ‘The Candy Man’ by Sammy Davis Jr.
Name one thing you couldn’t live without (not including people) Isn’t it obvious? Books and music – but that’s two things! I think this would be my artist materials – my pencils and sketch books. I’ll never stop drawing.
Working as a greetings card illustrator, Lisa put her career on hold to bring up three wonderful children:
Lily, Skyla and Sonny.Lisa’s work is inspired by family life. Lily and Bear began when Skyla drew a picture of lots of little coloured hearts and said, ‘This is the colour of my love for you, Mummy.’ Lisa created a screen print based on this drawing, which you can see on the endpapers to Lily
and Bear. Drawings by Lily and Sonny also feature in the book. Lisa wanted to explore her children’s pictures and their childlike way of looking at the world, seeing everything as fresh and new and brilliant.
ISBN: 9781910126059 Price: £11.99 Format: 273mm x 250mm, HB with jacket
Once in a while, along comes the perfect picture book, bearing the hallmarks of a true classic.
Lily and Bear by Lisa Stubbs is one such book.Lily loves Bear and Bear loves Lily.Lily loves to draw – and one day she draws Bear. Lily and Bear are best friends. And being friends means taking turns. So some of the day they do Lily things and some of the day they do Bear things.
A truly magical book about the give and take of friendship.

Now she has a husband, two children and very little spare time, but still manages to read when she can!

What’s your favourite children’s book? A difficult one! Picture book-wise, it’s probably The Up and Down Book by Mary Blair.

Laura is also the creator of the regular comic strip ‘Evil Emperor Penguin’ found in The Phoenix comic (UK), a weekly story comic for kids and adults alike! What’s your favourite children’s book? That’s a very hard question since there are so many beautifully written and illustrated books out there. However, if I had to pick one that has had an impact on my life, I’d say The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy. I absolutely adored the series as a child (and still do). I read them over and over and the inside illustrations are beautiful.
What’s your favourite song? Hands down it’s ‘Circle of Life’ by Elton John and Tim Rice. Best song ever.

Giles & Alexandra Milton
Giles Milton is an insomniac who spends his sleepless nights inventing monsters, beasts and other bizarre creatures. When not writing whimsical stories for children, he writes rather more serious stories for adults: his historical narrative, Nathaniel’s Nutmeg, was an international bestseller. His desk is less than three feet away from his wife’s but they argue surprisingly rarely.
What’s your favourite children’s book? The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken.
What’s your favourite song? ‘Lily the Pink’ by Scaffold.

Jane began her career designing greetings cards, book jackets and posters. Gradually she moved towards children’s book illustration, specialising in fairy tales, mythology and folk tales, which she finds endlessly fascinating. Jane finds writing as absorbing as illustration and loves to be able to do both. Her work frequently takes her into schools where she finds the thoughts and responses of children invaluable and stimulating. In her spare time Jane likes to sing, garden, walk, cook, and talk to the cat. Jane is married to David Temple, musical director of the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

lovebird a sweet peach-coloured face and
the hoopoe handsome black and white
stripes and a russet-coloured crest.
Now, the boubou is a fussy bird
who is forever running up and down,
cheeping and twittering, trying to
attract attention at all costs. He was
near the end of the row but he couldn’t
wait for his turn. He was very impatient,
behaving like a spoilt child, hopping up
and down saying, “Me next! Me next!”
At first Mulungu ignored him,
determined to make him wait for his
turn. He painted the cuckoo emerald
green and the little kingfisher purple
and blue. But still the boubou kept
clamouring and fussing. Mulungu was

God went on: “When the ark is finished, you must move in, with your
wife and your sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, and their three wives too.”
Noah was relieved – at least his family would be saved.
But then God continued: “Now, I want you to bring two of every living thing into the ark, male and female – birds of the air, and beasts of the fields and mountains and woodlands. Don’t forget anything – two of everything, even the tiny creeping creatures, worms and ants and

from the path they knew and when they looked up they realised they were lost. Suddenly they came upon the
looming grey walls of the castle. Joringel grabbed Jorinda by the hand. “Quick, we must run!” But he realised with horror that he held not Jorinda’s soft hand but a feather. Jorinda had become a tiny feathered bird, a linnet, fluttering in panic before his eyes. He tried to
hold her in his cupped hands, crying, “Oh, Jorinda, my sweet girl! Come back to me!” But his limbs were like stone and his voice was silenced.
A screech owl with eyes like glowing coals flew around them – once, twice, three times – calling, “To-woo, to-woo,

“I demand that the nightingale
be brought to sing to me this very
evening,” roared the Emperor, “or heads
will roll!”
But where was the nightingale to be
found? No one seemed to know and, as
the day went on, the inhabitants of the
palace became more and more nervous.
At last, a young kitchen maid came
forward.
“Oh yes, sirs, I can take you to the
nightingale. I know her very well.
I pass her on my way home and I often
stop to listen to her song.”
They set off for the wood, the little
kitchen maid leading the way and

“Oh yes, Father – that’s him,” said the girl. Taro was bewildered. “I was the little turtle you rescued yesterday,” the girl explained. “I sent my servant to fetch you so that we could thank you properly.”
“There is no need,” said Taro, bowing low to the girl. But the Dragon King thundered,
“There is every need – you saved my daughter’s life and you are a hero! She wishes to marry you and have you live here with us under the ocean. What do you say?”
Taro looked at the lovely princess, with her flowing black hair and kimono of turquoise silk, and said yes!
A third corner was ablaze
with crimson maples,
In another the f lowers bloomed with all
the glory of full summer.
Monkey grabbed it
and raced to the top
of the tree.
“Have you found
it, Monkey?” called
Shark, from the
water far below.
“Oh, my dear friend Shark,” called
down Monkey, “I was a fool to believe a
shark could be my friend, but not as big
a fool as you. Where else could my heart
possibly be, but beating in my chest?”
The treetops rang with the laughter
of the monkeys as they pelted the shark
below with fruit.

Tom Knight
Paul Harrison
Paul was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and has worked in a variety of jobs with mixed success. He’s been a builder’s labourer (he was keen, but rubbish), a barman (merely adequate), a waiter (really rubbish), a roofer (rubbish), he’s sold double glazing (rubbish): garden furniture (all right at that) and toys (OK). Somehow he never got sacked. Since then he’s been a children’s books editor (not bad at that, actually) and now writes for what may loosely be described as a living.
In between all that he got married, had a couple of kids and moved to Worthing in England (good).
What’s your favourite children’s book? Currently it’s The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.
What’s your favourite song? ‘Open Up’ by Leftfield.
Name one thing you couldn’t live without (not including people) I’ve got a Neolithic flint flake I found from a hill fort close to our house. Historically it’s of no importance; it’s a bit of flint that’s been chipped away in the process of making something such as a hand axe, but I find it fascinating.
After several years of working as a graphic designer, Tom Knight eventually realised that true happiness lies in drawing pictures for a living. He was raised on a steady diet of Beano comics, Tintin books and good sea air, and often found that the easiest way to make people smile was with a silly drawing. Inspired by the natural world around him, Tom is often found plonking away at stringed instruments when he should be drawing, or drawing when he really should be doing anything else.
What’s your favourite children’s book? The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.
What’s your favourite song? ‘The Kiss’ by Judee Sill.
Name one thing you couldn’t live without (not including people) My guitar.
