The Sp orts View —By WOODHULL HUBBARD

The Golden Flashes ended their basketball season Friday nigh:on a happy note with an easy victory over West Babylon. Coach BobHazen's team finished its league campaign with eight wins and fourlosses. Their overall record was 12 victories and five losses.

After losing such stars as Dave Eales and Al Slavik throughgraduation it wasn 't believed this year's team would go too far. Itlacked' height and wasn 't thought to be too good defensively. How*wer Tom Brennan , Perry Kinkaide , Jerry Parks and George Robinson suddenly csme into their own. Bob Friedrick steadied the lean:and was the guiding light on the defense. The speecy left-handerwon the award in the East Islip Christmas tournament for beingthe most valuable player. Dale Corbett proved to be a big assetwith his height and unerring side shots. Harry DeRonde, the teamcaptain , could always be depended upo to play a steady game.

We read with interest a sports column in a Suffolk dailywhere the writer suggested that there should be a giant postseason basketball tournament In the Long Island Arena atCommack. His theory is that many of the teams get a late startand are out of the pennant chase early but at the end of theseason have as good teams as some of the league champions. He cited Port Jefferson as an example, explaining that theNorth Shore team started basketball late because of football(the Thanksgiving Day game against Patchogue) and lost two orthree league games, then came on strong to end up as one ofthe leading teams in the county.

It is good to see Coach Johnny Veryzer's Islip team win the B-lchampionship over Kings Park. There isn't a more popular coacharound than John and he has done a great job with the material onhand. Islip will face Bridgehampton , the B-3 winner, on the Sachemcourt tomorrow night. The victor will face Southold, the B-2 champions on March 11th for the championship.

Big Biil Thieben dropped in 41 points to lead the Bay Shorefaculty to a win over the seniors in a benefit game.

Skip Kelly, Ron Roster and Richie Scudero represented Sayvillein the Section II wrestling championships at Amityviile. All three-gave good accounts of themselves with Roster reaching the quarterfinals before bowing to Port Jefferson's Baxter Piercey.

much for human endurance formore than a month at mist.Another Henry Onderdonk

The name of Henry OnderdonkJr. is well known to students otLong Island history for the greatamount of material he compiledon the Revolutionary War era ,and especially as it concernedQueens County. Sometimes, how-ever, his name has been confusedwith that of his cousin , HenryHoscrop Onderdonk , who alsowrote on historical subjects. Thelatter , a son of Bishop BenjaminT. Onderdonk , was a long-timeresident of Hempstead where in1870 he purchased the HemnsteadInquirer. He wrote a number othistorical pamphlets and a his-tory of the Protestant EpiscopalChurches of New York. The Name of Seaford

It is pretty much accepted bylocal historians that the village ofSeaford was named for Seafordm the state of Delaware. It cameabout in an unusual way. Manyyears ago a horse stolen in whatis now S-aford , L. I., was finallyrecovered in Seaford , Del., and asthe Long Island community wasthen in the throes of seeking aname for its new post office it de-cided to adopt the Delawarename."Blubber Row", Southold Town

During the mid-1800's, the sec-tion of Southold town lying alongthe main road between Cutchogu"and Peconie was known as Blub-ber Row. Nearly every home inthe area was that of a retiredwhaling captain or one who livedthere between voyages. Some ofthe descendants of these whalersstill own and occupy their oldhomesteads.
