Our amazing £66 million campus opened its doors for
the first time in September 2011, offering outstanding
learning facilities to ensure that you get the most out
of your learning experience with us!
The main atrium also known as the Street has been designed to give our
students space to access a range of facilities, whether they’re dedicated
to learning or beyond. The open plan layout of the Street includes a variety
of food and drink outlets such as Starbucks where the students enjoy
having a break from their lessons and talking to their friends. Off the Street,
students can find a range of areas for learning and student support such
as Careers Office, Learning Zone (library), Money Zone (finance office) and
Urban Chill (student activities centre).
Our students enjoy learning in the state-of-the-art classrooms, workshops
and business units dedicated to practical training. They include:
• Urban Elegance hair salon offering
a full range of hairdressing services
• Urban Serenity beauty salon
providing a variety of treatments
• Urban Flavours restaurant
serving high quality food
• Construction workshops
dedicated to brickwork,
plumbing, painting &
decorating and electrical work
• Motor vehicle
maintenance workshops
• Science labs
• Mac suites
• Music studios
Every September, the College
organises the Enrichment Fair -
it’s a great chance for new students
to find out what’s on at the College
and within the local community
Last year, departments such as Learning
Zone, Urban Fitness, Student Activities Team
and Student Ambassador Scheme all had a
presence at the event. Emma Love, Urban
Fitness manager reflected: ‘The event gave
us a great opportunity to talk to students
about their brand new gym that includes 70
workstations for cardiovascular workout,
a sauna, a steam room and an extensive
exercise class timetable. Students can access
the gym at a discounted price which means
that they will be able to improve their fitness
without breaking the bank.’
Other organisations included those based in
the local community, such as Empire Cinema,
Aston Villa, Macmillan, Frankie & Benny’s,
Northfield Shopping Centre and more.

spotliGHt on: apprenticesHips...Expert Plumbing, a local emergency
response company have recently
taken on an apprentice completing
the Level 2 Certificate in Basic
Plumbing with the support of
Bournville College, recognising the
vital role apprentices hold for the
future of the plumbing industry.
Having already taken on 5 apprentices
previously, Craig Wooldridge, co-owner of
Expert Plumbing believes that it is important
for the future of the plumbing industry for
companies to invest in the younger generation.
‘It is imperative for students looking to progress
in the plumbing industry to take apprenticeships;
not only do they learn the basics and theory at
College but we can teach them the practical
side. We can train an apprentice from start to
finish and put them with a local engineer to gain
as much experience as possible’, said Craig.
John Wooldridge (16), currently completing
his Level 2 Certificate in Basic Plumbing as
part of his apprenticeship believes that this
training scheme is invaluable in helping to gain
employment within the plumbing industry.
‘I would definitely recommend the course to
others looking to go into the plumbing industry.
The apprenticeship has given me the chance
to gain hands on experience as well as working
towards my plumbing qualification. Bournville
College have been really supportive through the
different stages of my apprenticeship and Expert
Plumbing have helped to provide me with the
experience needed in the industry’, said John.
If you would like more information on
apprenticeships, visit bournville.ac.uk/

career spotliGHt: cHantelle GriBBle...18 year old Chantelle Gribble from Selly Oak has started a
career as a beauty therapist on a cruise ship thanks to a
handful of beauty qualifications from Bournville College.
Having no previous qualifications or experience in beauty therapy but with a keen interest
in starting a career in this industry, Chantelle joined Bournville College on NVQ Level 2
in Beauty Therapy progressing onto the NVQ Level 3. Chantelle’s fast progress didn’t
go unnoticed by her tutors and she was encouraged to consider a career as a beauty
therapist on a cruise ship.
When she applied for a position of a beauty therapist to a popular Stenier agency
specialising in cruise ship recruitment, she was confident she could do the job but unsure
how she would stand a chance against other applicants. It was the experience and
knowledge that she gained in Bournville’s training beauty salon and her passion for this
industry that saw her fly through the recruitment process and succeed in being offered a
job on a cruise sailing through Central America and places like Panama and Costa Rica.
Chantelle reflected: ‘I cannot fault my experience at Bournville College. The teachers
were always helpful and the fact that I was able to gain a real work experience in the
College’s beauty salon helped incredibly.’
Bournville College’s new campus includes a fantastic beauty salon Urban Serenity,
featuring a training suite where the students are able to learn from professionals working
in this field. Open to the general public, students have a prime opportunity to practice
their newly acquired skills on real clients.
Jane O’Neill, Curriculum Leader for Beauty Therapy at Bournville College added: ‘We
are excited about welcoming our beauty students to Urban Serenity and giving them the
best possible start into their future careers. Chantelle is just one example of a Bournville
student that has done exceptionally well. Many other students now work in commercial
salons or have gone on to specialise in a beauty subject close to their heart. A career in
beauty is a rewarding one, offering many different career opportunities such as becoming
an aromatherapist, beauty therapist, make-up artist, salon manager, skin specialist,
technician and many more.’

netBall takes oFF...Students of Bournville College
interested in netball are now able
to improve their game skills, thanks
to an award of £4186 from Sports
England. The funding helped
the College to develop a Netball
Development Centre at its brand new
£66 million campus.
The funds have been used towards
netball kit and equipment as well
as training sessions in the College’s
sports hall that features a full size netball
court. Netball Development Centre is open to all students
aged 19 or under who have a keen interest in the game, want to
improve their health and increase general fitness.
Joanne Insley, Sports Development Co-ordinator, commented: ‘We are very grateful
for the funding from Sports England to develop the Netball Development Centre here
at Bournville. In addition, we have an NGB qualified coach – Kelly McCormack on
board, who will be working with our Centre to improve players’ skills and practical
awareness of the sport. As the season progresses we hope to form links with the
community and also enter an evening league.’
Netball training sessions take place three times a week. If netball isn’t
your cup of tea, there is a wide range of other sports that you can participate in.

twelve students enrolled on the Prince’s trust Programme with Bournville College
participated in a sponsored cycle ride equivalent to the distance from John O’Groats to
Land’s End. the challenge took place at the College’s new gym, urban fitness.
The money raised helped the students complete their community project, involving service
refurbishment in Weoley Castle Square Club.
‘It was a relay event, with each team member completing around 50 miles, achieving a total
of 603 miles as a team. It was hard work but we had to reach our target.’ Rowan Carr,
Prince’s Trust Team Leader at Bournville College said.
The Prince’s Trust Programme was founded by the Prince of Wales in 1976 to aid personal
development and offer work experience, residential trips and community projects to unemployed
