Color Guard CertificationSubmitted by Brian Bobek

On July 16, the Chapter 154 color guard went through a one‐day training session toreceive official certification for their participation in funeral services conducted fordeceased U.S. Army personnel. Eighteen members of the color guard attended this

training, conducted by MSgt. Rector and First Sgt. Trejo of the U.S. Army Reserve groupin Roseville. Topics covered included providing pall bearer assistance, rifle salute, bugleplaying, and flag‐folding protocols. This certification allows the color guard to berecognized for assisting the Army personnel at veteran funerals.

Freedom Hill Clean UpSubmitted by Brian Bobek

It was recently brought up that our memorial at Freedom Hill was, once again, in needof some attention and cleanup. Before a crew could even be put together, RonBankeroff stepped up and took care of the cleanup. Many thanks, Ron, for jumping to

the task and making our memorial look good again.

From the state VVA newsletter:``July 8‐10, the Michigan VietnamTraveling Memorial was displayed atthe annual Motorcycle Rally for

Veterans in Sault Ste. Marie. The 25‐footlong wall containing the names of the 2,654men and women we lost from Michigan inVietnam. In addition to the memorial, wehave books with biographies on all 2,654and pictures of more than 1,250 of them. Itis our goal to get a picture of everyone sopeople can see who they were. The displayalso includes the eight Medal of Honorrecipients from Michigan from the VietnamWar and a book which has a picture andbiography on everyone Michigan has lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. Chapter 154 alsocreated a Medal for the Global War On Terrorism. We present vets this medal when theycome to look at our display. Many times the family of a KIA hero visits our wall and wepresent them with this medal to honor their hero. Giving out the medal is a way forChapter 154 to live up to our motto `Never Again Will One Generation of VeteransAbandon Another.` Chapter 154 is honored to be the keepers of the Michigan VietnamVeterans Traveling Memorial. The memorial is manned by Charlie and Ruth Babcock,Dave and Terry Lehrman, Dennis and Lynn Kushner, Peggy Rossman and Pat Daniels aswell as other members of Chapter 154. The memorial costs nothing to bring to an eventother than allowing us to put up a donation box and that is to help with gas and supplies.It is Chapter 154’s hope that by reminding people of the sacrifices made by our Vietnamvets, it will in turn remind them of the sacrifices being made today by our men andwomen of America, and just exactly what it is we owe the veterans of this country.Because the only thing we owe them is EVERYTHING!`` (photos Page 3)

Important Notice to Veterans

• Camp LeJeune Water Contamination Warning

There has been a lot of information coming through lately regarding contaminated drinking water on the CampLeJuene Marine base. Informational meetings have been held in several states, and there is a movement going to tryto get a similar meeting set up in Michigan. If you, or someone you know, served at this facility, let them knowabout this situation before this becomes another Agent Orange issue. There are certain health problems that arebecoming apparent in both the personnel who served there as well as their offspring, linked to this water problem.

Anyone interested in attending such a meeting should contact Mike Partain. His email address is: [email protected]

On July 2, the MichiganVietnam TravelingMemorial was taken and

displayed at the LZ Michiganevent in Grand Rapids. LZMichigan was the first‐ever,statewide welcome homecelebration for MichiganVietnam veterans. Pat Daniels,Peggy Rossman, BenElwartowski, Edd Beaudin and Iaccompanied the memorial toGrand Rapids, arriving around4pm on Friday. The memorialwas unpacked and set up, butthe remaining tables andmerchandise were left until thefollowing morning just in case ofbad weather.   Joining us in Grand Rapids wasMike Schneider, and PhilMichaud was there along withhis race car. Things got off to aslow start on the 3rd, but byafternoon it was all we could doto keep up with the crowds. Merchandise sales were brisk,and the memorial had people theremainder of the day. Wereceived promises from manypeople to provide pictures forour biography books. Thefestivities continued well into the evening, and concluded with fireworks shortly after10pm. All that can be said about the weather was.....HOT!   I continue to be amazed at how many people we encounter that have never seen ourmemorial wall. Needless to say, the day was filled with many hugs and many tears. Wepresented numerous medallions to the young men and women serving in the militarytoday. It was a great event, and talk is they may try to make it an annual event.   In closing, let me say that, for anyone who thinks these trips with the memorial are"boondoggles,” let me say that it was very hard work in a very unforgiving sun. Teardownwas not completed until after midnight, and we certainly appreciated a shower and acomfortable bed.

Long time no see!  I do know that youhave been busy as hell.

I've kept you in the loop about mybook being published. I'm also findingthat the marketing necessary afterwardis taking much more time than actuallywriting the book itself. You have to haveread my original manuscript when I wasin the color guard way back when, andcirculated it around the chapter at thattime ‐‐ the wives loved it!  However, thenew version has been converted to a

third person point of view and is much more interesting than theoriginal. It's carried on Amazon.com as a Kindle e‐book version andalso a paperback.   I've already sent inquiries to the Veteran, VFW and VietnamMagazines asking about the protocol to list a book review or mentionof my book in one of their editions.    How many other fellow 154 chapter members have accomplishedsomething like this? Chapter 154 is also mentioned in my author's bioin the book.   I've listed below the link to an article that was written in theSterling Heights newspaper and also to my blog site in the event youhaven't seen them yet.
