President’s Message

The picnic is behind us and what a great job by Gary Purcell and hiscommittee. The weather was terrific and we had a great time. Nofireworks, but we still had a good crowd and everybody seemed to

enjoy it to all who volunteered. Thank you. It is you who chose tovolunteer, who move us forward and we are most grateful for your efforts.

As many of you have heard or seen in the news, the remains of ByronFouty and Alex Jimenez were found in Iraq. Please keep their families inyour thoughts and prayers. We, better than most, understand that“freedom isn't free.” The next project coming in September will be thePOW/MIA vigil the third weekend in September. Please mark yourcalendar and join us in Novi as we raise awareness about our missingbrothers and sisters.

The Operation Christmas dance will be December 6 at Gino’s Surf. Frank Blowers has graciously agreed to be the dancechairman. Gino's will seat 500, so we shouldn't have anyone without a ticket. It may be a little more per ticket but as weare all aware the price of all the things we put in the boxes is rising, like everything else. Hopefully we can fill the place andmake enough to do Operation Christmas like we have done in the past.

Thanks everybody, for all you do. You are what makes 154 what it is: the premier veterans organization around! Welcome home, stay safe, and “give some care.”

Some of the events that we have been involved with are: OperationChristmas, Michigan Moving Wall, 4th of July Picnic, Selfridge Air Show, Traveling Vietnam Wall.

The meeting opened at 7:10 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.

July 4th Family Picnic:There will be no fireworks at the picnic. Since there are nofireworks, there will be no food vendors. Gary Purcell will belooking for vendors.The games will run from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.Dave Lehrman will be in the dunk tank.The associates will be selling water and pop and helping out withthe games.

The next meeting will be Thursday, July 31 at 7 p.m. Randy andMarilyn would like to have a potluck dinner that night. They willsupply the meat – everyone coming will bring a dish to pass.Marilynn will send out an email. Hope everyone will attend!

NOTE: The associates will not be meeting in August.

Minutes of General Membership Meeting 7/9/08 - Submitted by Dennis Kushner, acting secretary

Meeting called to order by Pat Daniels at 7:30 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance and moment of silence. Motion by Dave Brevick/FrankGriffin to accept the chapter minutes as published in the Boo Coo News. Motion carried. Three new members were welcomedhome, Bob Perry, Ron Drdul, and Bob Stuard. We had four guest speakers, Karen Mack and Carrie Wood from Resurrection

Cemetery, and Heather Hutchison and Diane from 5/3 Bank. Motion to suspend regular business by Dave Brevick/John Wiley. Carried.Karen and Carrie were asking for input for the setup, construction and need to recognize the veterans in the new military sections. Asurvey was filled out asking for our input. The information will go back to the board of directors to help them set things up. Heatherand Diane from 5/3 Bank from the Roseville branch gave a presentation on special military banking. Woody Horne, Color/Honor Guard andScholarships. The Color/Honor Guard is alwayslooking for new members, so if you have the time,Woody would be grateful.

Gary Stephens, Food Bank, Cash Raffle andMerchandise - Gary needs the tickets sold or turnedin for others to sell. The tickets or money must beturned in by September 15. The food bank took care of45 families; 125 people taken care of. Received agaylord from Macomb County Food Bank. Thanks forthe help unload it. To add to the report, the food bankreceived two new freezers and new Dell computer.

Gary Purcell, Picnic Chairperson - Gary wasabsent - Pat Daniels recognized and thanked thecommittee members and the help at the picnic. DaveBrevick thanked all his security team members. It wasa great picnic.

Dave Schaner, Lottery Raffle - Tickets are all soldand there are some raffle winners that have not cashedtheir check yet this is messing up the bookkeeping alittle so please cash them so we can keep the books inorder. Dave presented the chapter with a $5,000 checkfrom the lottery! Thank you for taking charge of thelottery raffle.

George Sawyer, Agent Orange - Blue Water Navywas denied Agent Orange and VA denied hypertension.Warning on VA medical vouchers: it could cause thedemise of the VA medical systems.

Steve Bago - Michigan Moving Wall - Steve not present - Pat gave a reportthe Michigan Moving Wall U.P. Tour. Pat asked the crew to stand forrecognition, Pat, Peggy, Dave, Terri, Charlie, Ruth, Dennis and Lynn. Patcontinued on Flint presentation of the Michigan Moving Wall, Don Ladafrom Flint chapter called to thank us for showing the wall there! The wall willbe at the Chesterfield Library Aug. 11-15. Sure could us the help. Contact theVet Center to sign up on the sheet. The wall is scheduled for Sterling FestAug 1-2. Aug. 10 Selfridge is having a picnic for all who are currently serving.They need help. The wall will be there then. Sept 11 the wall will be at MISfor four days. There is also a blood drive at that time.

Randy Chom AVVA - 8-10 volunteers had a great time, the dunk tank wasa great hit. The youngsters had fun. Dave Lehrman got dumped quite a bit byhis grandchildren and Peggy!

Old BusinessPat - Picnic - Thanks again for all your hard work and it was awe inspiring topresent the medals to the Afghanistan and Iraq vets and others.

Blood drive - almost 100 pints with the HOG chapter almost two monthsago. Run to VA hospital is July 19; line up is at 10 a.m. You do not have tohave a bike to go; a car is just fine. Bring a paper bag with toiletries (norazors, plastic bags or long socks) or bring $10 and a bag will be given to you.

New BusinessDave Brevick, chairman of 25th anniversary party. June 2009 will be thechapter’s 25th year. Dave is looking for help with the party and memorabiliafrom the past 25 years.

Frank Griffin let us know that there is going to be 350 jobs available at theVA hospital in the near future.

Discussion on Operation Christmas Party. Options: Imperial House - SuperSaver Dec. 6 two-meat buffet will seat up to 500, but they can rent out theother side of the hall. Gino’s Surf Dec. 6 -- 500 seating, $30 each with a five-hour bar.

American Legion Legacy Fund - the ride from Indy to Phoenix. Raises fundsto help children who have lost a parent while serving in the Armed Forces tohelp them go to college. The steak-out is fundraiser; you cook your ownsteak then get all the trimmings with it. Legacy Run donation from us was$500. Our chapter is presented with a plaque from the Legacy committee.

Social Nite is this Friday 7:30 p.m. come on out! It happens every month.

Aug. 15 blood drive at Wolverine Harley-Davidson.

Bobby “Weasel” Edwards a chapter member was asked to stand because hewas with Pat and one other looking for Chapter 9 drove all around Detroitlooking for it. It was not to be found and the three decided to start their ownchapter so that is how 154 began.

Navy Pilot Missing In Action From the Vietnam War is Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announcedtoday that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the VietnamWar, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full

military honors. He is Lt. Cmdr. Ralph C. Bisz, U.S. Navy, of Miami Shores, Fla. Hisfuneral arrangements are being set by his family. On Aug. 4, 1967, Bisz took off in an A-4E Skyhawk from the USS Oriskany to bomb anenemy petroleum depot near Haiphong, Vietnam. As he neared the target, his aircraft wasstruck by an enemy surface-to-air missile and crashed near the town of Hai Duong in HaiHung Province. No parachute was observed and no emergency beeper signal was received. In 1988, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (S.R.V.) repatriated to the United Stateshuman remains from Hai Hung Province, which they attributed to Bisz on the basis oftheir historical records of the shootdown as well as documentation of his burial. Between 1988 and 2004, joint U.S./S.R.V. teams, led by the Joint POW/MIAAccounting Command (JPAC), conducted several investigations of the incident andsurveyed the crash site. A team found aircraft wreckage at the site which was consistentwith an A-4E Skyhawk. Teams also interviewed witnesses who recalled the crash andburial of the pilot in a nearby cemetery. Additionally, one witness indicated that heoversaw the exhumation of the American's remains from the cemetery, and their turnoverto district officials. Between 1993 and 2004, 25 samples from the remains turned over in 1988 weresubmitted to several laboratories for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis, but yieldedinconclusive results. In 2007, the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory usedrefined DNA collection techniques and succeeded in obtaining verifiable mtDNA. Using forensic identification tools, circumstantial evidence, mtDNA analysis and dentalcomparisons, scientists from JPAC identified the remains as those of Bisz.
