From the Principal… Welcome back for the final term of the 2019
school year. I hope that everyone had a re-
laxing break with family and friends.
Balonne Public Speaking Competition
A big congratulations to both Neville and
Hannah, who represented our school so well
at the Balonne Public Speaking competition
in Thallon last Thursday. Both students re-
ceived positive feedback from the judges.
Dance Lessons
The students have had a fabulous time this
week participating in Hip Hop lessons with
Mrs Jodie Noon. They will continue to prac-
tise their moves before we have a return
visit from Mrs Noon to polish off their per-
formances ready for Speech Night.
Pupil Free Day
A reminder that next Monday, 21 October is
a Pupil Free Day. School classes will resume
on Tuesday.
School Times Poll
We have made the decision to transition to
consistent school hours for the entirety of
the school year next year. Parents are en-
couraged to have their say in deciding our
school times for 2020 by responding to the
poll on the P and C Facebook page.
Kindy Enrolments for 2020
Parents with children turning 4 by June 30
next year are invited to collect a Kindy enrol-
ment package from the school office. We
will be holding a transition morning for these
students on Wednesday 20 November from
8:30—11:00 am, parents will need to be in
attendance for this session.
Book Fair
We will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair
from Monday 28 October until Friday 1 No-
vember. This year’s theme for the Book Fair I

Class Notes
The students have had quite a mixed bag of activities since returning
to school for our final term.
We have started learning about rhyming in the junior class and a vari-
ety of poetic devices in the senior class as an introduction to our poet-
ry unit. The upper class are also studying some of the classics, such as
Waltzing Matilda, discussing the story behind them as well as studying
their features.
We have all been enjoying the very hands
on nature of maths so far, with the juniors
learning about the language of location and
directions and the senior class learning
about symmetry including producing an art
work using rotational symmetry. We have
also been looking at different ways to represent and make numbers.
It hasn’t been all hard work though. This week they have all spent
three days learning some amazing dances choreographed and taught
by the very talented Mrs Jodie
Noon. We will continue to prac-
tise and polish the performance
during the remainder of this term
ready to showcase their talents to
the community on Awards Night.
Staff Spot: Mr Sullivan I like this school because it is filled with ener-
getic, compassionate and respectful students
who always enjoy HPE.
I have enjoyed, most of all, the students con-sistent displays of sportsmanship and fair play.
Staff Spot: Mrs Coetzer I like this school because the students are all great learners who are eager to learn new con-cepts and apply their learning.
I am looking forward to the end of year celebra-
tions and Christmas holidays!

Department of Education News What’s your ‘what-if’ plan?
When it comes to extreme weather events in Queensland, it’s not a
matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’. Take the time to check your ‘what-if’ plan and
get ready for disaster season during Get Ready Queensland Week, 13 –
19 October 2019. When it comes to natural disasters, Queensland is one
of the most vulnerable states in Australia, so it’s important to be aware,
be prepared and know the risks — it could be the difference between
staying safe or putting yourself and those you love in danger.

Helping your child’s reading development
What is literacy? Literacy is about communication. It is the ability to read and write, and to use written information appropriately in a range of contexts. This involves:
reading and writing
speaking and listening
viewing and critical thinking.
Literacy also includes a person’s cultural knowledge, which enables them to recognise and use language that is appropriate to different social situations. Children benefit when given opportunities to develop their literacy skills. This looks like:
talking to others reading a book listening to a story
writing a story reading a sign viewing a website
playing a computer game watching a movie going shopping

Recipe Corner
This term we will feature QCWA’s Country Kitchens—a program designed to teach and
encourage everyone to better understand nutritional requirements for a healthier lifestyle.
The underlying five key messages are:-
Get more fruit and veg: With spring comes a wealth of seasonal fruits and vegetables;
strawberries, eggplant and capsicums are especially plentiful this time of year.
Cook at home: Try making a homemade jam or relish this spring, it is an easy way to add
more whole fruit and eliminate the artificial flavouring seen in many store-bought varieties!
Check your portion size: Using a smaller plate will help you to keep your portion size in
check. Remember to fill half your plate with veggies!
Be aware of sugar in your drinks: Seasonal fruits and cucumber can be used to fla-
vour and sweeten water in replace of juices and soft drinks!
Sit less, move more: Challenge yourself this month! Keep track of
your steps with a pedometer or app and share your total kilometres at
the end.
