Over the years Somerset West
has become an increasingly attrac-

is a more equal distribution of op-

community.
Reunion Drive will be another
important link in the chain that
connects people while helping to
improve movement between Som-

Lowrys Pass, and the stunning
Wine Route and Garden Route.
The site of the planned Reunion

The Summer Club is a sustaina-

now, in ten years time and beyond.
Its alsoarevolutionaryconcept for
Somerset West, as nowhere else in
the area can one enter the market
and buy a new, trendy, lock up and
go apartment on a 65ha lifestyle es-

Mitsubishi launches itsall-newPajeroSport4x2model
QUICKPIC
Mitsubishi Motors SA has introduced an
important new derivative to its range of
Pajero Sport full-size SUVs.
It is a very well equipped 4x2 model which
has the latest 2,5 F high performance turbo
diesel engine developing 131 kW of power at
4 000 r/min and 350 Nm of torque at 1 800 r/
min. This new engine is particularly fuel effi-
cient with a fuel consumption of only
8,5F/100 km. This engine performs well, and
as one of the higher torque engines in the
class, delivers the goods on the highway and
in the city.
The new addition to the face lifted Pajero
Sport 4x4 models introduced in September
2013isparticularlywellequipped,whilebeing
the lowest priced of its direct competitors.
Priced at R419 900 the Pajero Sport 4x2 offers
outstanding value for money considering the
very high level of standard equipment for
comfort, convenience and safety, as well as
the versatility of its variable arrangements
for the second and third rows of seats.
This new derivative in the Pajero Sport
range also benefits from the eye-catching
and bold new frontal styling and features
such as colour-coded door handles and exte-
rior rear viewmirrors, which now incorpo-
rate indicator repeaters. Wheels are more
aggressively styled 17 alloys with 245/65
R17 tyres.
Safety features in this new derivative in-
clude active stability and traction control,
while Mitsubishis insistence of high levels
in terms of active and passive safety means
six airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and elec-
tronic brake distribution (EBD), as well as
Mitsubishis characteristic RISE safety cell
body structure.
As befits its luxury specification it is
available only with a five-speed automatic
transmission, and leads its competitors by
having paddle shifts on the steering wheel
for thosewanting to select gear ratiosmanu-
ally.
The seats are covered in black leather,
while the steering wheel is also leather cov-
ered and incorporates multi-function
switches, including cruise control, Blue-
tooth control and audio control.
The rear-view mirror has an electronic
chromaticsystemtopreventglareautomati-
cally, while the rear park assist systemnow
includes a reversing camera besides the
standard rear park distance control
Vehicles like the Pajero Sport are great
for long distances and used by families for
road trips. Additional features, perfect for
this, include full climate control and rear
controls for the air-conditioning for passen-
gers. There are also seven seats, although
the rear set can fold down flat for more boot
space.
Full size SUVs have plenty of interior
room and the Pajero Sport is no exception,
featuring seven seats and luggage space of
1 149 Fwith the third row of seats folded flat
and 1 776 F when both the second and third
rows are folded flat.
The latest Pajero Sportmodels will be availa-
ble in a choice of five colours: EisenGreyMica,
Cool Silver Metallic, Quartz Bronze Metallic,
Medium Red and White Pearl.
The Pajero Sport is covered by a 3-
year/100 000 km warranty and 5-
year/90 000 km service plan.
Road holding is very good, gravel roads
are dispatched without hiccup and the Paje
ro Sport has a settled stable feel.

JaguarXF2-litre: the sheepishapology
HANJO STIER
You find me here with a bowed
headandtheproverbialhatinmy
hands. The reason Im clutching
on to the rim of that great re-
morseful symbol is because I owe
you,dearreader,anapology.The
samegoes foreveryone in theem-
ployofJaguarorZF;Imsorryfor
what I wrote about the XF 2-litre
turbo-petrol.
Im not one to make excuses and
I hate people who dont take respon-
sibility for their actions but I do
need to clarify how this all came
about. A few months ago we re-
ceived a crimson metallic Jaguar
XF 2-litre turbo-petrol press car
which was absolutely awful to
drive. Jerky, unpredictable, rough
very un-Jaguar-ish.
My impressions were mirrored
by the fine feelings of our female
scribe who confirmed that the red
Jag was terribly erratic in its re-
sponse and had a crude, indecisive
gearbox.Whatmade this very pecu-
liar was that the unit in question,
ZFs celebrated eight-speed auto,
has impressed us no end in every
other car we found it in.
A fewweeks after thedreadful car
leftandmydamningreportwaspub-
lished, I chatted to a good friend and
fellow motoring journalist about
test cars yes, most of us can only
talk wheels when the 2-litre Jag
came up and I regurgitated all the
hateful slander contained in said re-
view.Shockandawefilled theroom.
Jerky, rough and indecisive
shouldnt come within ten pages of
a Jaguar XF review, my friend al-
leged, telling me of the smoothness
and eager precision he encountered
in this vehicle. Thats when it
dawned onme that theremust have
been something wrong with the car
at the time we tested it.
A few calls and sheepish enquir-
ies later, I gotpermission forarevis-
it of the exact same vehicle which
bringsus to thepresentmoment.Af-
ter a week of driving the previously
accused, I can now confirm that the
car is absolutely wonderful and all
my negative comments were com-
pletely unfounded.
Beforeyou jumpto theconclusion
that Jaguars are unreliable beasts,
I have topoint out that test cars tend
to lead a hard life and random fail-
ures happen to other brands too;
even the ones you dont expect it of.
My own cars also had hiccups;
moody mass airflow sensors, loose
pipesandsuch likecanwreakhavoc
on anything.
What you need to know, is this:
where before the 177kW (241hp) en-
gine was lethargic and the gearbox
was utterly hopeless, this time
around the Jaguar XF 2-litre turbo-
petrol was a symphony of modern
four-cylinder turbo power, masses
of torque and deliciously smooth
eight-speed automated gear shifts.
The top two or three ratios can be
a bit tall when the motorway goes
uphill but the previously lacking
torque and gunshot down-shifts
have been replaced by reasonable
grunt and silky gear transitions.
The only hesitation we found in the
gearbox was when going from little
to full throttle it takes a second to
find the right cog.
Yet again I have to stress that its
nowhere near the previously frus-
trating power gaps and gear jerks.
In fact, you canpre-load the gearbox
in Sport or manual mode and even
turn the XF 2-litre into a semi-
naughty sports saloon. Our per-
formance testing also highlighted
the drastic improvement we felt.
A few months ago, the XF hit
100km/h in10 seconds flat, reaching
400m in 16.8 seconds at 129km/h.
Yesterday morning, the same car
shaved a whopping 2,6 seconds off
the 100km/h sprint and reached
400m 2,1 seconds and 25,4km/h fast-
er. Unsurprisingly, the revitalised
Jag also posted much better fuel
economy.
All thisnewfoundresponsiveness
evenmadeusgetupatstupidoclock
and throw the XF around a moun-
tain pass, where it exhibited fantas-
tic gripandawonderfullyevenpow-
er delivery. Torque rises to maxi-
mum at 2 000rpm, power peaks at
5 500rpm and the engine will reach
its redline in a lovely, linear fash-
ion.
The motor has a slightly lumpy
cold-start idle but otherwise doesnt
put a piston wrong. That gearbox,
that amazing gearbox, has also vin-
dicated itself and gets my renewed
and highest praise. And as for the
Jaguar XF, it still is one of my fa-
vourites and a car whose gorgeous
metal I wouldnt mind parking in
my garage.
It may be getting on in years and
feel cramped compared to some ri-
vals but its just so beautiful and ele-
gant. Affordable and diverse too,
with prices from R535 000 to
R615 000 for the four cylinder mod-
els, the range continues with V6
petrols and diesels around R750 000
right up to the supercharged V8 R
and RS models at a million plus.
Those last two are decidedly an-
gry cats and obviously have a hard-
er ride but all other XFs are what
aJaguarshouldbe.Quiet, comforta-
ble and composed. Even the base
spec cars have leather trim, elec-
tric everything, keyless entry, pul-
sating starter button, sci-fi gear le-
ver and animated air vents.
Go for the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel if
you want hilariously good fuel con-
sumption and where before I ad-
vised you to stay clear of this 2-litre
turbo-petrolmodel, Icannowhighly
recommend it to anyone looking for
a medium-sized executive saloon
with a perky engine and brilliant
gearbox.
It may be getting on in years and feel cramped compared to some rivals but its just so beautiful and elegant.
