From the Desk of the Principal
Boght Hills Colt News April, 2016
Dear Families:
March has certainly been another busy month with many exciting activities as well as huge fluctuations in the weather. Layered clothing seems to be the wisest wardrobe choice.
As the old adage goes, “April showers bring May flowers”, but with April also comes NYS Assessments in grades 3-6 English Language Arts and Mathematics. Our teachers have prepared the students well and we anticipate another successful year. We really need the help of every family by ensuring that your children come to school on time each day, well-rested, and having had a good breakfast. Please arrive on time and do not schedule appointments during the mornings of April 5-7 or April 13-15. There is an extremely tight testing and scoring schedule this year, leaving little make-up period for students who miss a testing day. Your child’s success is a significant factor for their future academic programming. There has been some important improvements this year. Please make note of the memo from NYSED.
For those celebrating Passover, we wish you a blessed holiday season. For those traveling and/or spending time with family and friends, we wish you a safe and fun-filled number of days.
Please note that school will be closed for spring recess from April 25-29. Planning for June Jamboree has begun. If you would like to assist in the many volunteer
opportunities, please contact Mrs. Joslin at 577-2553 or [email protected]. “Many hands make light work” and lots of fun for kids! Please note the date is Tuesday, June 14.
A wonderful North Colonie tradition is to honor employees with 20, 25, 30 or more years of service in the district. Congratulations and thank you for their years of dedication to our students and their families.
Several grade levels have already benefited from the work with author-in-residence, Jackie Sweeney. We are grateful to the PTA for funding this opportunity to enhance the writing program.
The 4th grade recital was enjoyed by many staff and family members. The students, while only beginners, have progressed quite well under the direction of Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Kimbler and Mrs. Tribou.
Hopefully, you’ve had a chance to attend some of the district budget meetings, either in person, or through the use of Livestream from the comfort of your home. The process the Board of Education and administration participate in is phenomenal and quite a juggling act. Our district has remained fiscally sound because of the efforts to curb spending while preserving programs for students. These are challenging times as there are many new expectations for our students and staff, with no new funding sources to support them. Please stay informed about the budget decisions our Board has to make so that you can make an informed decision during the budget vote on May 17. Thank you for your continued support with creating a wonderful learning environment for our students. Join us for the budget presentation during the May 12th PTA meeting.
We also wish to thank Mrs. Kiran and her many volunteers for a very successful Quiz Night. Kudos to special guest, Mr. McNamara, who did a wonderful job keeping us on track. The new format was very engaging for all students and audience members. Congratulations to our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade competitors. You really know a lot!
Sincerely, Mrs. Greiner

Art Room News from Mrs. Duffy Congratulations to the following 6th graders who have their artwork on display at the Town of Colonie Library:
Ayaan Bargeer Mira Brehm Christina Savastio
Ali Benkhalifa Rajani Nimma
The following students represent Boght Hills School by having their work displayed at the Empire State Plaza:
Sarah Biazon Minyi Chen Sydnee Hanrahan Sadie Weiss
Lillian Buresh Joshua Demarest Louis Meunier Emily Yocum
Joshua Busch Alexia Folmsbee Zachary Paton Cadence Young
Finally, you may be wondering why you have yet to see artwork created in art class. It’s because all students K-6 are collecting their projects in a portfolio until the end of the year!
In the meantime, find a piece of artwork in a book or online and ask your children to describe what they see. Ask them to “play teacher” and ask you what you see! Students should be able to tell you what they are working on in art, but as always, Mrs. Duffy is just an email away: [email protected]
Physical Education News We would like to congratulate the 2015-2016 winners of the Physical Education Leadership Awards.
Grade 5 Boy: Mason Roberts Grade 6 Boy: Joseph Karpierz
Grade 5 Girl: Riley Strand Grade 6 Girl: Mia Fredrick
Congratulations to these students!!
An Important Reminder Please remember that school doors do not open in the morning until 8:05 AM. Students will not be permitted into the building prior to this as there is no supervision. If prior arrangements have been made, such as extra help with a teacher, intramurals with Coach Ahl or Coach Williams, Art Explorers with Mrs. Duffy etc., the office will be notified to allow participating students to enter early.

Box Top Information from the PTA We recently passed a submission deadline in which we turned in 5,717 Box Top. For this school year, that puts our total earnings to $1,155.90. Keep up the great work. Our gift card winners for the month of March are: Jayda Rodgers (KL)
Christina Savastio (6W)
Even though the program is drawing to a close, Labels for Education is still continuing to run promotions to give schools the opportunity to maximize their points. The next opportunity is a Double UPC promo-tion during the month of May. For each label submitted in May, it will earn our school an extra point - one point now becomes two, five becomes six and ten becomes eleven. This is a great way to boost our point balance so that we can order some great education merchandise. Please submit your labels to the school as soon as possible so we can bundle them up to ship out in May.
The standing for the end of year ice cream parties are as follows:
5M - 251 labels
6W - 161 labels
5F - 158 labels

If you are planning on moving at the end of the school year or over the summer and your children will not be attending Boght Hills School for the 2016-2017 school year, please com-plete the bottom portion of this page and return it to Mrs. Burns in the school office as soon as possible.
