“Fundamentals of Biomedical Microdevices” Fall 2007
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 2
Interdisciplinary endeavors require thoughtful literature research strategies!• Resources in literature of more than one
discipline• Terminology can vary by discipline• May not have any core texts
At a high topical level, what would you say are the main disciplines used in this course?
Biomedical Microdevices: Interdisciplinary
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 3
Berry & Williamson in Ackerson say, for “nanotechnology”:
IOP’s Nanotechnology first journal (field development landmark) – 1990
Best databases (all at USC!): Science Citation Index (in Web of Knowledge), * Compendex (in Engineering Village 2), * Inspec (in EV2), * SciFinder Scholar (requires local file download to access), PubMed.
*-ed items, PLUS Worldcat – good for conference proceedings. I’d add: IEEE Xplore!

Library of Congress “Science Tracer Bullets”:• Nanotechnology closest
-http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/tracer-bullets/nanotechnologytb.html
• National Library of Medicine’s MeSH database: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html
Anyone used either? (More for librarians, but useful to all.) Let’s take a look…

Have you used any??

USC: http://www.usc.edu/ejournalsatoz• Searches all “periodicals,” so online conference proceedings included.

•How to access from USC Libraries page…Anyone Know?!
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 13
USC Libraries “Scholars Portal”• Webfeat
“federated search”
• Not normally recommended, too many false hits, not very granular search
• HOWEVER… good for inter-disciplinary resource pointers
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 14
• STILL must go down and DESELECT catalogs (HELIX, HOMER, USC Advocat)
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 15
Scholars Portal MEMS Surgery Results
ebrary hidden treasures!
SP useful for knowing WHERE to do a more detailed search
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 16
ebrary Results: Citation done for you!“Advances in microsensors and bioMEMS are likely to yield great
dividends. Current triaxial accelerometers and micropressure transducers are small enough and low-power enough to be implanted in the body.”
National Academy of Engineering Staff. Seventh Annual Symposium on Frontiers of Engineering. Washington, DC, USA: National Academies Press, 2002. p 97. http://site.ebrary.com/lib/uscisd/Doc?id=10038538&ppg=107

Back to Databases:Access to Articles, Proceedings
• Remember, Ackerson text said: Science Citation Index, Compendex, Inspec, SciFinder Scholar, PubMed. I added IEEE Xplore.
• What database platforms/suites include these?• Scholars Portal results for MEMS surgery said: ebrary (NOTE some false hits,
though); Inspec (46 hits), ProQuest Research Library Complete (34), IEEE Explore (23), JSTOR (23), Web of Science Science Citation Index Expanded (20).
• From what point can you access all of these?• Let’s finish up by looking at Inspec, Xplore and Medline (subscription version
of?...)

ALL but books at USC!
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 21
NOTE: Xplore and OVID (next slides) have simultaneous user limits – remember to log out! (EV2-Inspec & Compendex, ProQuest and Web of Science do NOT have limits – but DO still logout please).
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 22
Option 2 of Medline recommended; also, CINAHL good for social aspects.
BME 451 Fall07 Tompson for Meng 23
MeSH default is ON; HSC librarians recommend on, so you use best retrieval vocabulary.
Useful to “explode” the “trees” in the MeSH hierarchy to get the TOTALLY BEST search terms. I usually ALSO include the “X as keyword” search option.

Selected Library Resources forBiomedical Microdevices Research: RECAP
What are a few good search terms for research for this course?
What are some of the best databases to use to access the interdisciplinary literature useful for this course?
Any questions for me??
