Title 24 or the California Building Energy g gyEfficiency Standards
For the past 30 years, while per capita electricity consumption in the US has increased by nearly 50 percent, California electricity use per capita haspercent, California electricity use per capita has been approximately flat. This achievement is the result of continued progress in cost-effective building and appliance standards and ongoingbuilding and appliance standards and ongoing enhancements to efficiency programs. Since the mid-1970s, California has regularly increased the energy efficiency requirements for new appliances sold and new buildings constructed here.

Who’s involved in the ProcessWho s involved in the Process• Building department is the enforcement
agency. HERS rater also assist in this function.
• Energy Analyst provides energy compliance documents (usually computer p ( y pperformance method)
• HERS Rater – CEC certified Third PartyHERS Rater CEC certified Third Party verification or like a “special Inspector”

Prescriptive vs PerformancePrescriptive vs. Performance
• Performance method or computerPerformance method or computer modeling is most commonly used
• Based on Annual Energy usage in• Based on Annual Energy usage in Btu/sq.ft./yearAll t d ff f f t f• Allows trade offs of energy features for construction flexibility
• Prescriptive method good for additions
