Black Eve theme documentation

Introduction Thank you for purchasing my theme. If you have any questions that are beyond the scope of this

help file, please feel free to email via my user page contact form here. Thanks so much!

Black Eve was conceived to be used on a wide range of online business. It’s clean style and

flexibility gives you the advantage to create a powerful and rapid online image. It has 6

widget areas that can be filed with 5 custom widgets (recent posts, testimonials, twitter,

flickr, follow us). Following different business models it comes with 7 different page

templates (services template, blog template pages 1,2,3 columns, portfolio template, contact

template, one page template ), in this way you can customize the theme as you wish.

Installation

For proper installation please follow the next steps. Also please check the Wordpress installation guide, which you find here Installing WordPress

1. First of all, your server should support PHP. You will also need an installation of Wordpress. If you already don’t have one, download it from here and follow instructions on the wordpress site to install it correctly.

2. If you have a running installation of wordpress, place the theme files from the download into the “themes” folder. The path to this folder should be something like /wordpress_install_dir/wp-content/themes/. Make sure that all theme files (without the PSDs and help files !) are in the separate folder called “eagle”. The path to the theme files should be /wordpress_install_dir/wp-content/themes/balckeve upon completition of this step.

3. Put 0777 permissions on “cache” folder, from the theme folder (it’s used for timthumb.php – a custom image-resize script)

4. Enter you Wordpress Admin Interface. It should be available at http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin.

5. In the left menu, find Appearance tab. Click it. A submenu should appear. Click Themes.

6. The themes screen should show all of your installed themes. Find Blackeve theme. 7. Click Activate.

Now your theme should look like this:

Theme configuration

Creating site structure

Now your theme is installed and ready to go. First we need to create the site/page structure.

1. First we need to create the pages

a. Go to “Pages” and delete the “About” page

b. Go to “Pages>>Add new”

c. Create the pages as you like. To catch all the features of the theme let’s create the

following pages

i. Normal page

1. Normal Subpage (Please select “Normal page” as the parent page)

ii. Blog 1 column

1. Blog 1 column alt (Please select “Blog 1 column” as the parent page)

iii. Blog 3 columns

1. Blog 3 columns alt (Please select “Blog 3 columns” as the parent

page)

iv. Blog Standard

1. Blog standard alt (Please select “Blog standard” as the parent page)

v. Contact

vi. Services

1. Services alt (Please select “Services” as the parent page)

vii. Portfolio

1. Portfolio alt (Please select “Portfolio” as the parent page)

viii.

Page 4: Black Eve Theme Documentation

d. After you create the pages go to “Appearance>>Black Eve theme options” to link

the pages to the menu and assign the templates.

i. In “Black Eve theme options” click on “Menu” tab and link the pages to the

menu. (Click on “ADD” to add a menu item. You can display

pages/categories/custom links.)

ii. iii. To achieve our structure we must select as menu items only the parent

pages, the subpages auto populate by default.

iv. For example, to display the "Normal pages”, we select only the “Normal

page” page as a menu item. The subpages “Normal subpage” auto populate.

v. Add all the pages and arrange them as you want (drag the box with the page,

left or right, to arrange them as you want).

vi. vii. Save and preview.

viii. After you assign the page to the menu the site will look like this:

Page 5: Black Eve Theme Documentation

Black Eve Theme - WP Version Created: 18/03/2010 | By: Cristian Gogoneata | Email: [email protected] | www.cssluxury.com

ix. x. Now we have to assign the pages with the predefined templates. For this we

have to go on each page tab (from Black Eve theme options) and select

what pages to show.

xi. The best part is that you can create as many page templates you want and

assign what categories you want.

xii. For example to assign the Portfolio page with the Portfolio template we

have to do the following:

1. Go to “Black Eve theme options >> Portfolio page”

2. Select from “Select portfolio page” >> “Portfolio” – this is the page we

created earlier. Now we have assigned the proper template.

3.

Page 6: Black Eve Theme Documentation

Black Eve Theme - WP Version Created: 18/03/2010 | By: Cristian Gogoneata | Email: [email protected] | www.cssluxury.com

4. Select the number of posts to show until pagination kicks in. For

example 10.

5. Click Save and preview. Your portfolio page must look like this now:

6. 7. Now, we have to create the template page for the other page we

created earlier (Portfolio alt) – another portfolio page

8. Click on “Add portfolio page” from the bottom of the “Portfolio

page” tab.

9. 10. After you click on this button, the system will auto generate a

new portfolio page. So, you have to repeat the same operation

for page select and number of posts to show.

Page 7: Black Eve Theme Documentation

Black Eve Theme - WP Version Created: 18/03/2010 | By: Cristian Gogoneata | Email: [email protected] | www.cssluxury.com

11. xiii. The other pages follows the same exact model. (except contact page

and normal page)

2. Now we have to create the categories for the pages that use posts (Blog pages, Portfolio and

Services) and for the main page slider

a. Go to “Posts >> Categories”

b. Create the category/categories for Blog pages, Portfolio and Services and Main

page slider. Try to give your categories relevant names and try to create them

following the pages structure, so it will be easier to know which is which. See below:

Page 8: Black Eve Theme Documentation

c. 3. In order to display the categories we need to have posts in them, so let’s create some

posts.

a. Go to “Posts”

b. Delete the “Hello world” post

c. Let’s create a post for the “Blog 1 column” category

d. Go to “Posts>>Add new”

e. Give it a name, insert some content and select the proper category from the right

side:

Page 9: Black Eve Theme Documentation

Black Eve Theme - WP Version Created: 18/03/2010 | By: Cristian Gogoneata | Email: [email protected] | www.cssluxury.com

f. g. Do the same operation until you have at least one post in each category.

h. Now, we have to tell the “Blog 1 column” page what category to display.

Remember! If you don’t choose what categories the template pages must

display, they will display all posts from all categories.

i. So, go to “Blackeve theme options” and select the “Blog 1 col” tab.

j. Select the “blog-1-column” category , next to “Select categories to display:”

k. l. Save and preview the “Blog 1 column” page.

Page 10: Black Eve Theme Documentation

m. n. All the template pages follow the same model.

At this point we have created the site structure and created some basic posts. That was the

“difficult” part, if we can call it that. In the next sections of the tutorial I will show you create more

advanced posts with thumbnail image, videos and large images.

Working with posts The posts were created to have custom features, mainly with the use of custom fields.

You can:

1. Attach a thumbnail image

2. Attach a large image (for “Portfolio” page)

3. Attach a video/swf (for “Portfolio” page)

4. Attach an icon/image (for “Services” page, without the image resize function)

Create a post with thumbnail image for the Blog Standard category

The theme makes use of custom fields to display posts thumb images. In this example I will show

you how to create a post for the “Blog Standard” category.

1. Go to “Post>>Add new”

2. Give the post a title and content.

3. Now we have to insert the post thumb image.

4. Click on the Insert Image icon to upload a new image.

Page 11: Black Eve Theme Documentation

5. 6. Upload your image using WordPress' built-in image uploader.

7. When your image has successfully been uploaded, click on File URL. A URL should appear in

the field above the button (Link URL field). Copy that value.

8.

client name and website.

4. Flickr – Displays your flickr images.

5. Black Eve Follow us – Displays your social links. This can be configured through

“Miscellaneous” tab, in the theme options

Troubleshoting

If your images don’t show up The theme uses Timthumb function for image resizing, which requires.

1. GD library, which is available on any host sever with PHP 4.3+ installed.

2. /cache/ folder permissions to 777.

Please verify the following if your still images don’t show:

1. Make sure the timthumb.php file has its permission set to 777

2. If you host your website on HostGator, you will need to ask them to change a few settings within mod_security for Apache. This is a documented issue with timthumb usage on Host Gator. Below is an email I sent to them making my own request:

Dear Host Gator,

I recently updated my WordPress website with a theme that uses the

timthumb.php thumbnail generator.

Page 26: Black Eve Theme Documentation

Black Eve Theme - WP Version Created: 18/03/2010 | By: Cristian Gogoneata | Email: [email protected] | www.cssluxury.com

I have learned that in order for it to work properly HostGator needs to

change a few setting for my website. When I try to run timthumb I receive

a 403 error.

I need the following rules [1234234,340151, 340153] added to mod_security

for www.yourdomain.com.

Please let me know if there are any questions or concerns.

Thanks!

Contact Host Gator at their support email address. They responded within the hour and the

setting was changed shortly thereafter.

If you receive a weird message at install

Like: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR in /home3/ (...) /wp-

content/themes/cleanr/index.php on line xxx

This means you have a PHP version installed on the server lower than PHP 5.x.x. Please

upgrade to a newer version.

Usefull information

If you want to show one column page.

1. Create a new page (Pages>>Add new)

2. Select “One column page” from the right side of the window, under “Templates”

If you want to use the same table format from “Elements” page

Here is the code for the table. Just paste it in the “Code” mode of the editor.

<table id="box-table-b" summary="Services list">
