Adrienne Greene, CLTC, MBA New York Life Insurance Company Agent 520 Broad Hollow Road Melville, NY 516-983-8647 by Debbi Spiegel November has been called Thanksvember. Your family’s financial security is definitely something to be thankful for. Adrienne Greene, a licensed agent with New York Life Insur-ance Company, offers a full suite of products that can help you meet a number of insurance and financial needs. Some pretty important people count on you. Life insurance can give you the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they’ll have what they need, even if you’re not here to give it to them. Having a life insurance policy can go a long way to giving you the comfort of knowing that your loved ones will be cared for if the unthinkable happens. The basic premise is simple. Life in-surance gives you peace of mind while you’re alive, and financial support for your loved ones when you’re gone. There are sev-eral types of life insurance pol-icies, including term and whole life. Adrienne prides herself on educating her clients. She ex-plains that term life insurance (which is life insurance protec-tion which lasts for a certain period) is like “renting an apart-ment” and whole life insurance is like “buying a house.” Some-times thought of as “death insur-ance policies,” final expense policies pay benefits to the people you designate as your beneficiaries when you die. Certain term life policies can be

converted to a permanent policy which is a useful benefit if your life changes and you need ad-ditional protection. Whole life insurance (which is permanent life insurance) builds cash value over time, and if your needs for the death benefit change, Whole Life gives you the option to take out a tax-free loan if needed for things like col-lege funding, retirement, manag-ing costs for extended periods of care, and lifetime income strategies. Accessing the cash value of the whole life policy will reduce the available cash surrender value and the death benefit so that needs to be taken into consideration. In addition policy loans will require interest payments during the payback period. Dividends are paid and provide an opportunity for the cash value to grow, although div-idends are not guaranteed. Adri-enne will analyze your needs and recommend appropriate so-lutions. Adrienne Greene and New York Life Insurance Company provide personal strategies for life insurance, retirement, wealth transfer, education funding, 401k rollovers, charitable giving, and long-term care. Business owners can learn about offering their employees benefits, retirement planning, business succession planning and asset protection. No matter what stage of life

you’re in, whether starting out, newlyweds, growing a family, or approaching retirement, Adri-enne will get to know you and create a custom solution to meet your financial goals. Enrollment is open and not subject to the deadlines of health insurance plans. New York Life has policy options to fit your needs and budget. Life insurance isn’t just necessary, it’s essential for peace of mind. New York Life Insurance Com-pany has been in business for 175 years. It is a mutual life in-surance company, which means that its primary focus is on the needs of its policyholders , not outside shareholders.. They are committed to humanity, integrity and financial strength. Their pro-ducts offer security in this world of uncertainty. Generations of Americans have turned to New York Life to help them protect their loved ones, prepare for re-tirement, and plan for a secure financial future. Adrienne is out and about in our town. It is as easy as a phone call, Zoom meeting, or appoint-ment at your home or business. Her use of social media is very informative and educational. She keeps with all safety guidelines to protect against the spread of COVID-19. As a wife, mother, neighbor, PTO President, and Girl Scout leader, Adrienne can help your family to be prepared for the future. Life insurance is the ultimate love letter!

On November 4, 2020 Town Supervisor Ed Wehrheim and the Town Board met for a Ground-breaking Ceremony for “Cele-brate Park” at the site of the former Irish Viking Bar on Lake Avenue in St. James. This park, spearheaded by Natalie Wein-stein, President of Celebrate St. James, will become the center-piece of the Historic St. James Cultural and Arts District as a central meeting place with new off-street parking, for a revital-ized economic community. It will celebrate our hometown he-roes, our art, music, history, and culture. It will be built by dona-tions from the people of St. James and will stand as a testa-ment to what local government, community minded organiza-tions, and hometown residents can accomplish together. Designed by Robert Retnauer, RDA Landscape Architecture, with the assistance of Architect

Michael Morbillo of Enspire De-sign Group, and Designer Nata-lie Weinstein of Natalie Weinstein Design Associates, “Celebrate Park” will offer many ways for people, companies and organizations to “own” a part of it. From purchases of the 2021-

22 keepsake “Hometown He-roes” calendar at a donation of $10 (or more), to inscribed bricks and blocks from $100 - $200, to major item donations, all dona-tions are welcome. Visit www.celebratestjames.org for more information.

The St. James Chamber of the Commerce will host the Menorah light-ing on all eight nights of Chanukah, beginning Thursday, December 10, 2020 through Thursday, December 17, 2020. Celebrations are at 4:30 p.m. every evening except Friday which will be at 4 p.m. (before sunset). Join us on the triangle at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Route 25A in St. James. All are welcome. Bring friends and neighbors to cele-brate this Festival of Lights. Masks are required and family groups will be together but spaced apart from other families.

Song sheets and special treats will be given out each night courtesy of the St. James Chamber. The treats can be taken to your car, or home, to eat so that we can keep our masks on while participating in the festivities.

If you want to attend virtually, nightly cele-brations will be Live-streamed on the St. James Chamber of Commerce Facebook page. The Menorah is put up each year and main-tained by the St. James Chamber of Commerce. It was originally do-nated by Laura Hirsch, who will again coordi-nate this year’s event.

Please remember those less fortunate and bring along a do-nation of non-perishable food items, new unused toys or gifts that you have purchased or have received and would like to regift to someone in need.

A R O U N D T O W N

by Patricia Busby & Patricia Clark On a perfect autumn day, No-vember 4, 2020, Celebrate St. James board members, along with Smithtown town officials stood together to officially unveil plans to build a new park in the center of our beloved town, “CELEBRATE PARK.” The revital-ization of Lake Avenue is well underway – and the best is yet to come! The park will be a testa-ment to what can be achieved when town government and the community work together for a common goal and the common good. Achieving this goal may be daunting, but also exciting – and far from impossible. Celebrate St. James invites you to share in this wonderful mile-stone for our town by “Owning a Piece of St. James” through the Celebrate Park Brick/Block drive. You can “set in stone” a personalized message on a brick for the walkway or seating wall in the park. Bricks are offered in 3 sizes, and other donation op-portunities are also available. Please see the ad in this issue of OUR TOWN. The “Hometown Heroes” keepsake calendar drive is also underway. The cover of this beautiful calendar features a work entitled “Embracing our Heroes” by Arline Goldstein, and every month features a local art-ist’s expression of feelings during these challenging times. The purchase of this calendar will also help to fund Celebrate Park. The holiday season will be here before you can say Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah!

Celebrate St. James is teaming up with the St. James Fire Depart-ment Engine Company #1 and other local organizations to sponsor a “St. James Community Holiday Gifts & Toy Drive.” Do-nations of an unwrapped toy or a gift card can be brought to a drive-through event at Gyro-dyne/Flowerfield (25A entrance) on December 5 & 6 from 12-4 p.m. Santa will be on his sleigh aka Fire Truck for selfies and photos, and live holiday music will be played throughout the day. Our goal is to enable every child in the community to re-ceive a holiday gift, despite their family’s circumstances. Early do-

nations of gifts can be dropped off at the TD Bank on Lake Ave-nue, and gift cards can be mailed to: St. James Holiday Gift & Toy Drive, c/o Celebrate St. James, 459 Lake Ave., St. James NY 11780. For more info email: [email protected]. Celebrate St. James is also sponsoring a virtual Art Auction on the evening of Thursday, De-cember 3. The new virtual world has sparked so many innovative ways to get together. Marlin Art will provide the auction platform for this wonderful evening and a chance for you to spruce up your home for the holidays or buy a gift(s) for family and friends. Sponsor a Brick in the Park! Buy a calendar. Donate a toy or gift card. Check out the art auc-tion! There are so many things to look forward to. For more infor-mation, purchases, or to make a donation please check our web-site at www.celebratestjames.org.

by Bradley Harris, Smithtown Historian

With the celebration of Thanks-giving this month, I thought that it would be interesting to take a look at what is known about the very first celebration of Thanksgiving that took place in October of 1621 in Plym-outh, Massachusetts when the Pilgrims celebrated the harvest of their crops.

Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that we all enjoy as a day when family and friends gather and share a traditional meal of turkey and the trim-mings. It is as traditional as apple pie and ice cream, an all Ameri-can holiday. Yet it isn’t. For one thing, the celebration is certainly English in origin. Another thing to keep in mind is that the holi-day and its celebration has

evolved and changed with the passage of time. Thanksgiving Day as we know it today began with President Lincoln in 1863 when he set the date for cele-brating a national day of Thanks-giving as the fourth Thursday in November. Of course, other gen-erations of Americans have mod-ified that date. President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed that in 1939 the date for the celebration of Thanksgiving ought to be No-vember 23rd. This year at least, Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday of November on the 26th. So let’s just enjoy it, and this year, give it a little more zest by celebrating it as the Pilgrims

did so long ago in October of 1621 in Plymouth, Massachu-setts. If you are going to be a purist and really celebrate the holiday as the Pilgrims did, you first have to change the name of the cele-bration to “Harvest Home.” Ap-parently the Pilgrims had a festival that was more in tune with the English celebration than one that involved a day of prayer and Thanksgiving. Harvest Home was an “older mode of Thanks-giving” that was celebrated by English farmers once “the main crop was ingathered” and “it was cakes and ale and hang the cost.” Those who have studied that first Thanksgiving have con-cluded that “Plymouth’s Harvest Home conformed in most essen-tials to its English prototype. (James Deetz and Jay Anderson,

continued from page 18 Partakers of Plenty: A Study of the First Thanksgiving, Plymouth Plantation Educational Publica-tion Series, Plymouth Plantation, Plymouth, Massachusetts.) If you opt to celebrate the holi-day as the Pilgrims did, you should plan for a festival that will last approximately one week, but you can squeeze it into four days. You will need enough wild game to last for four days so it might be wise to prepare in ad-vance and send the duck hunters out early to bring home “geese, ducks, and possibly turkeys.” Governor Bradford of Plymouth Colony made sure that this was done beforehand. And during this festival, you should also plan for some “traditional recreations” that you and your guests can enjoy over the four days. You might want to include some sort

of a parade, a shooting demon-stration with “muskets and fowl-ing pieces,” and some athletic competition. You might consider some of the things the Pilgrims could have done in this regard: archery, track and field events or cricket. These activities would approximate some of their ath-letic recreations. (James Deetz and Jay Anderson, op. cit.) The most important aspect of your celebration of Harvest Home, that of feasting, will take a little more preparation time. You don’t have to be concerned about table settings and enough chairs for the guests. If you do this the way the Pilgrims must have, you can eat outside (weather permitting). “The famil-iar scene to which we have be-come accustomed, of Pilgrims and Indians feasting together while seated at tables in the

open, is most certainly a creation of later artists.... It is more likely that food was taken, not at an appointed time and place, but at frequent intervals throughout the time of the festival. Seating was almost certainly on the ground. Lacking forks..., food was taken with fingers, from the tips of knives, and with spoons. Wooden trenchers (small shallow dishes) were probably very much in evidence, while other food-stuffs could have been consumed directly from large kettles, or in the case of meat, eaten with the hands, hot from the roasting fire.”A bit messy perhaps, but it will certainly make the clean up of dishes and silverware a lot easier. (James Deetz and Jay An-derson, op. cit.) The actual food will be a little more tricky. The main focal point

continued from page 20 of the meal will certainly have to be a “young, lean goose.” This will have to be “a domesticated bird, fattened on grain stubble.” You should prepare several ducks and wild turkeys to add to the repast, but the goose will be the piece de resistance. To sup-plement the goose, you might want to prepare several “fleshpies.” These would have been meat pies tucked into some kind of corn-meal pastry. You might want to make such a pie out of “old chicken, hare or pi-geon meat tenderized by hours of simmering and then baking.” Or if you have a deer hunter in the family, you could substitute venison as the Pilgrims surely must have done with the deer that the Indians brought to the feast. To add to the feast, you might want to make a “frumenty

pudding.” This will give you trou-ble and require some research on how to make it, but suffice it to say that you want a pudding that will approximate old-fash-ioned rice pudding, only this dish will have a wheat base, spices, fruits, and sweeteners like milk and honey. The vegetable for this feast will have to be pumpkins that you can bake, stew, or make into a pudding. And to top off this feast, don’t forget “the cakes and ale.” The cakes are not quite what you are used to however. “The cakes were made of corn – roasted, pounded in a homemade mortar and pestle, mixed into a paste with water, and fried on a griddle into thin, crisp ‘pan’ cakes.” To wash these “dry and crumbly” cakes down, you will need ale. You might want to homebrew a sweet ale, but maybe at this

point it would be easier to pick up some Molson’s Golden Ale. (James Deetz and Jay Anderson, op. cit.) There you have it – your own authentic Harvest Home celebra-tion. Actually, it sounds like it would be a lot of fun. If you de-cide to try and recreate Thanks-giving this way, by all means call me. I could roast the meat over an open fire. Have a happy Thanksgiving (or should I say Harvest Home). Editor’s Note: Brad Harris is the Town of Smithtown’s official Historian. by Rick Masters The artwork on Australia’s Crimes wine brand really stands out; the labels feature vintage mugshots of men like John Boyle O’Reilly, on the Red Blend, or Cornelius Dwyer Kane, on The Uprising, which is aged in a rum

barrel. What both of these men have in common is that they were sentenced to “Transporta-tion,” a system where British convicts were relocated to hard labor in a Western Australia penal colony. Considered only slightly more humane than the

death penalty, this practice began around 1788, and was ac-tive into the 1850s. To receive a sentence of Trans-portation, a person had to be convicted of at least one crime from a list of 19, hence the wine’s name. Although most crimes on the list are some type of theft, Bigamy, Impersonating An Egyptian and Watermen Car-rying Too Many Passengers On the Thames, If Any Drowned are also present. The wine bottles’ randomly distributed corks are each imprinted with one of the 19 Crimes Aside from offering a variety of surprisingly good wines at a value price, the 19 Crimes family of wines celebrates the personal-ities and histories of the people on the labels. Kane, for instance, settled in Queensland, becoming a civil servant. O’Reilly wrote poetry, escaped to America, then arranged to extract a small group of convicts to a whaling vessel by row boat; the event became known as the Catalpa Rescue. New Hyde Park to Montauk as well as New Jersey and New York City. Artists were asked to show what they have been creating during the pandemic and to share their thoughts and feelings about creating during these chal-lenging times. Some works in the exhibit express the fear and anx-iety while others find beauty in nature, or celebrate simple pleas-ures of everyday life. Some artists created to share memories of past joyful times… some created work specifically about the pan-demic. Many shared that the cre-ation of their art helped process their feelings. The common thread… joy in the simple act of creating. Be sure to visit the gallery – it is a safe space – masks are re-quired with social distancing.

Only 20 visitors are allowed in the gallery at one time with a limit of four per room. Enjoy the exhibit and experience art’s ca-pacity to bring joy and hope in these challenging times.

Most do not realize that the con-dition “flat feet”, which is a term used to describe the flattening of the foot’s inner arch, has more of an effect on the entire structure and stability of the body rather than the foot alone. A flattened arch causes the individual to put more stress and pressure on the inner part of the foot, causing the rest of the body to mold to its imperfection. As a result the body becomes off cen-tered and awkwardly baanced. When the foot imbalance is present, there is a negative impact on the knees, hips, pelvis and spine. Some patients must have these abnormal forces reduced before they can achieve improved spinal function.   Pronation is the rotation of a body part either inward or downward. The foot naturally presses down-ward or inward when walking or running. However, over-pronation causes a decrease in arch height, which can cause discomfort not only to the foot, but also to the en-tire body. Pronation is associated with the loss of arch height that causes the foot to rest unsettled

and off balanced. Pronation may become permanent if not treated, and will become progressively worse with time. One may ask, “How do I know if I have pronated feet?” Although it is best to deter-mine ones medical stance by con-sulting a doctor, generally a pronated foot flares outward during standing. Also, the Achilles tendons

and kneecaps may be pushed inward from the midline of the legs. If any of these problems are present, shoe orthotics may be a healthy choice!   Patients who suffer from this an-atomical imbalance can find relief in custom fit shoe orthotics. Shoe or-thotics, also know as Spinal Pelvic Stabilizers, are shoe inserts that cause the foot to remain centered, helping the body to realign itself to equilibrium. One beneficial aspect of using shoe orthotics is that they are able to correct an existing arch problem for long-term, relief. Over-all, orthotics contribute to full body wellness. For example, if one were to suffer from severe neck pain, it does not necessarily mean that the pain is concentrated in the neck re-gion. In fact, the pain could be from excess stress to the lower back of the legs.   Shoe orthotics can fit into most shoe wear with ease. Using the latest orthotics technology, doctors have the ability to take precise measurements of the foot to ensure maximum comfort.

Students in Joseph Sagarese’s AP Capstone English at Smithtown High School East are currently working on reviewing and critiquing documents as they prepare to write their academic papers this year. AP Capstone is a two-part, two-year program. As juniors, students enroll in the AP Seminar portion of the course which teaches students how to investigate real-world topics from multiple perspectives. Students carefully analyze information, write evidence-based arguments and effectively communicate them to others. During the second year, the AP Capstone Research allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem or issue of individual interest. Through this exploration, students design, plan and conduct a yearlong, re-search-based investigation to address a research question. The course cul-minates in an academic paper of 4,000-5,000 words and a presentation with an oral defense. Photo courtesy of Smithtown Central School District

Two Smithtown High School East ThINK Science Research Program students, senior Dylan McCreesh and junior Aman Mis-try, will have their award-win-ning essays published this fall in the Stony Brook University Young Investigators Review Journal. The 2020 Young Investigators Writing Competition challenged Long Is-land students with writing about “dilemmas regarding one of four controversies in science includ-ing experimental therapy, neural algorithms, environmental pol-icy, or sustainable engineering.” Maria Zeitlin, Smithtown High School East ThINK research co-ordinator, said, “I am so proud that two of the six students chosen from Long Island were East students. Reflection through writing is a tenant of the Science Research Program, and it was a terrific project we pursued into the summer months. Both Dylan and Aman are examples of ded-icated student-scientists who have valuable perspectives on scientific topics relevant to soci-ety. In both papers, it is evident that most topics have diverse per-spectives and an analysis must include multiple lenses.”

Mistry’s paper, “Unraveling the Ethics Behind Experimental Drugs,” is timely and relevant during this global pandemic. His thoughtful discussion of “com-passionate use” of experimental therapies engaged both sides of what we have recently experi-enced with the issuance of such

drugs. McCreesh’s essay, “Mitiga-ting Automated Discrimination,” provides a mindful expository on the bias that may be present in algorithmic decision-making processes. Ultimately, humans develop AGD and their inherent bias may be difficult to be recog-nized and mitigated.

by Scott Posner, CFP, CRPC, A.A.M.S. You’ve no doubt heard reports of personal data being stolen and used for financial fraud – any-thing from online shopping on your credit cards to actual theft from your financial accounts. This problem won’t go away any-time soon – but you can take steps to defend yourself. Here are a few suggestions: • Use multifactor authentication

or other extra security options with online accounts. Many of your online accounts offer extra security by giving you the option to prove your identity in different ways. With mutifactor authentication, you must pro-vide at least two different fac-tors to prove your identity when you log in to an account. This additional layer of security

provides you with much greater protection. • Be creative with passwords.

Create different passwords for work, financial services sites, social media and email – and give each password some length and complexity. Con-sider passphrases – actual words combined with symbols and numbers (for example, “ThisIsAPassphrase!2468”), for sites that allow them.

• Protect your computer and your key data. Keep your anti-virus software updated. And don’t install bootleg or unli-censed software, which could infect your computer with a virus. Also, back up your im-portant data.

• Watch out for fake websites or

apps. When making financial transactions, be sure you’re on the website of your bank or fi-nancial institution – and not on a fake site established by hackers. Your financial state-ments should have the legiti-mate website, so bookmark it and use it when doing any-thing with your accounts. Also, be careful when downloading apps – stick with those from established providers such as Google Play or the App Store.

continued • Avoid “over-sharing” on social

media. Cyberthieves constantly stalk social media platforms for information they can use to commit their crimes. You can help stymie them by limiting what you share online. It’s a good idea to keep your full name, address and birthday private. You might also avoid discussing your plans for up-coming vacations. And review your privacy settings periodi-cally so that only people you know or approve can see your information.

• Limit use of public Wi-Fi.

Hackers often set up their own Wi-Fi networks in public areas, such as the computers found in hotel business centers. Ask an employee for the name of the legitimate network. And even

when you use it, log off when you’re finished.

• Don’t take the bait of

“phishers.” Cyberthieves go “phishing” for sensitive infor-mation – usernames, pass-words and account numbers – by sending communications, such as emails, purporting to be from a business or financial institution with which you often do business. They may claim your account was “sus-pended” or that an “unautho-rized transaction” was made, and you’ll be asked to click on a link that takes you to what appears to be the company’s website. If you go along with this request, you could find malicious software being downloaded on your com-puter. But legitimate businesses generally won’t ask for account

numbers or passwords unless you initiate the transaction. Other signs of phishing include threatening language, “urgent” requests, misspelled words or odd word choices. If an email does look suspicious to you, delete it without opening it.

This list is not exhaustive, but by putting these steps to work, you can at least reduce the risk of becoming victimized by cy-bercriminals. by Adrienne Greene, CLTC, MBA Most busi-ness owners want to grow their busi-nesses and

maybe even pass them on to the next generation. But how many owners actually succeed? Rel-atively few, as it turns out. Studies show that only a third of family firms make it to the sec-ond generation, and just a sliver get passed on to the third genera-tion.1 A key reason for this is that many companies lack proper succession plans. Consider the situation your family, employees, and company would be in if something unex-pected were to happen to you. What would happen to your

business? Would it stay in the family? Could it realistically stay solvent without you at the helm? Or would it be sold? And then there’s the million-dollar ques-tion: Do you even know what your business is worth? The an-swers to these questions may not be as straightforward as you imagined. That’s why you should start planning now even if you plan to stay with the business for years to come. So, what options are available? If and when you exit your business, there are four pos-sible successors: family members, co-owners, key em-ployees, or an outside third party. That brings us to a succession action plan and exactly what that entails. First, select your succes-sor(s); this may require careful analysis. Next, determine your business valuation. Bear in mind

that when a business is sold to family members the transaction draws extra scrutiny from the IRS. Finally, develop a plan to transfer your business interest quickly to minimize operational disruptions. Once you identify your suc-cessor(s), you must make sure that the individual(s) is in a posi-tion to take over the company – and you must ensure a smooth transition by outlining the terms of succession in advance. A buy-sell agreement will work differ-ently, depending on the type of business entity and the number of owners. Each type of agree-ment helps create a smooth pro-cess for transferring ownership of the business. The buyer can pur-chase a life insurance policy to help make sure there are avail-

by Sally Wellinger It happens once a year, there is one day where we stop, slow down and think about what we ap-preciate and are thankful for. We do that after spending days preparing. We prepare the menu, the guest list, the décor, and purchase and prepare the food for our day of thank-fulness. Once we arrive to the day of slowing down and appreciating what we are thankful for, we get up early to start to prepare the food, iron our special outfits, set the table, make sure the house is clean and more. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days of the year, but maybe we are not celebrating the day in a way that it was intended. We really do not leave much time to stop, slow down and think about what we ap-preciate and are thankful for. We traditionally think of Thanksgiving as a day of remem-bering a special moment when the newly arrived Europeans gave thanks to the Native Ameri-cans for their generosity in help-ing the newcomers learn how to fish the native rivers, grow corn and other vegetables, harvest sap for maple, and many other skills which helped them survive in a land very different than the envi-ronment that they were used to. This day exemplifies who we are as a country and how we work together to create a better life for each other. Also, to me, this his-tory shows how easy it is for hu-mans to disconnect from nature. The Native Americans centered their society around connecting with nature. For example, they did not own land, but they lived with the land. By working with the land, the Native Americans remained connected with nature

and helped the new community learn to connect with the land in order to provide a sustainable and healthy community. This month is the perfect month to not only connect and give thanks to family and friends, but also a take the opportunity to connect back with nature. There are many different ways we can do that. On our own, we can just take the time to enjoy nature in a way that works for ourselves. It might be taking a walk in a local preserve, walking along the beach, or maybe just sitting in our backyard on a sunny, crisp fall day. Two other ways that have become increasingly pop-ular for Long Islanders to con-nect with nature are forest “bathing” and eco-mindfulness walks. They seem similar but are quite different. Forest bathing is a method developed in Japan called shinrin-yoku in the 1980’s

as a way to provide a way to alleviate tech-burnout. It is a method of embracing how our natu-ral world can help im-prove human health. In forest bathing, partici-pants follow a structured method of using all five senses to experience na-ture. On Long Island, there are forest bathing experiences in several lo-cations on Long Island, including Bayard Cutting Arboretum and Sands Point Preserve. My favor-ite way to experience na-ture is through eco-mindfulness walks. Eco-mindfulness is way to engage with nature through a process of eco-therapy which invites re-duced stress, relaxation, and connecting with na-ture on your own terms. While connecting with nature with these two methods, you not only connect with nature, but

also learn a bit about yourself. Eco-mindfulness walks are of-fered at Hallock State Park Pre-serve and Wildwood State Park this month. Whether you experi-ence nature yourself or decide to try out one of these two popular methods, I hope you are able to find a way to connect with na-ture and provide the opportunity to express gratitude for all our Earth provides. Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving and enjoy nature! Editor’s Note: Sally Wellinger is a St. James resident for over 30 years. She is the Executive Direc-tor for the Center of Environmental Edu-cation and Discovery (CEED) along with working as a part-time Biology AIS in-structor for Smithtown School District. by William Kent Addressing hearing loss isn’t just about what you hear – it’s about how you feel and function. People of all ages are urged to get their hearing tested this holi-day season. Studies show that when people address hearing loss, it can have a positive effect on their home life, self-con-fidence, relationships, mood, overall health, job performance, and even income. It safeguards quality of life by helping people maintain an active, healthy life-style and stay socially and cogni-tively engaged. Learning the status of our hear-ing health and addressing hear-ing loss are important to quality of life at every age. Gen Xers and youthful-minded baby boomers, in fact, are developing hearing loss in greater numbers, and as older Americans are putting off retirement and staying in the workforce longer, the ability to hear your best is becoming all the more important. Luckily, the vast majority of people with hearing loss can benefit from hearing instruments, and today's state-of-the art instruments are better than ever. The latest tech-nologies make it easier to hear people and sounds from all di-rections and are designed to filter out noise, like at crowded restaurants. Various styles sit dis-creetly and comfortably inside the ear canal and out of sight, making them virtually invisible, some are even waterproof or re-chargeable. Perhaps best of all, they’re wireless, helping people of all ages stay connected to their smart phones, home enter-tainment systems, and other prized electronics – but most im-portantly, to life. So go ahead, Ring in this Holi-day Season with a hearing test. Whether it’s conversation and laughter around the dinner table you enjoy most, or watching a

movie or football game together on the television, let the latest hearing instrument technologies help you hear your best and stay connected with family and friends in the New Year. Happier Holidays and a More Promising New Year Addressing hearing loss really can add to quality of life – dur-ing the holidays and year round. Here’s what getting a hearing test and using professionally fitted hearing instrument, if rec-ommended by a hearing care professional, may do for you: 1. Strengthen ties with family and friends. Healthy relation-ships rest largely on good com-munication. In one Better Hearing Institute study, more than half the respondents said using hearing instruments im-proved their relationships at home, their social lives, and their ability to join in groups. Many even saw improvements in their romance. 2. Raise your spirits. People with untreated hearing loss often feel angry, frustrated, anxious, iso-lated, and depressed. But re-search shows that when they use hearing instruments, many be-come more socially engaged, feel a greater sense of safety and independence, and see a general improvement in their overall quality of life. 3. Lead you to feel better about yourself. An important perk of using hearing instruments can be

enhanced emotional well-being. Research shows that when people with hearing loss use hearing instruments, many feel more in control of their lives and less self-critical. One study found that the majority of people with mild and severe hearing loss felt better about themselves and life overall as a result of using hear-ing instruments. 4. Keep your mind sharp. Studies out of Johns Hopkins linked hearing loss with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults and found that seniors with hear-ing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time. Studies found that many people with hearing loss report improvements in their cognitive skills with the use of hearing in-struments. 5. Unleash your earning poten-tial. Hearing your best at work helps you do your best. One study found that using hearing aids reduced the risk of income loss by 90-100% for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65-77% for those with severe to moderate hearing loss. And people with hearing loss who use hearing instruments are more likely to be employed than their peers who don’t. We have so much on our mind especially during such a hectic season. Give some time to your-self, relax, get a hearing eval-uation. If you’re experiencing difficulty in understanding words, TV, telephone or just ev-eryday conversation with family and friends, could be time to check it out. The worse thing you can do is nothing. Editor’s Note William Kent is the Director of Long Is-land Hearing, an audiology and hearing instrument practice. With convenient of-fice locations in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, they can be reached at 1-800-698-5200. You may also visit their web-site at [email protected] for more information about hearing loss.

Dear Ron

I need help with a “fur-granddog” problem. My son is the new fur parent of a wonderful, loving, beautiful, happy and snuggly large dog, named Howie. I love seeing and enjoying Howie. But I have two issues with the whole thing. One is that my son tends to “dump and run” and he places the Howie clean up all on me. When I’ve asked my

son about taking care of things and giving me no-tice on watching his dog, he makes me feel guilty because I should share my love of Howie like I would if Howie was my grandson. What would be the best way to begin a conversation which will make my son know that it’s not about loving Howie, it’s about being a responsible parent?

— Fur Grandma Dear Grannie, Fur parents should be just as responsible as all parents and it may just take a simple defining of re-sponsibilities and setting some boundaries to make the situation work for you both. And all with the foundation of love and care of Howie. First, start by getting some idea of the dog sitting schedule or the minimum amount of notice you would need. Explain that by giving you notice, you can get the most out of your visits by clearing your schedule to fully enjoy Howie. Next issue is the care. Make a list of the things you need to do and ask your son which ones he can take care of. Perhaps he can walk the yard and pick up leaving you to vacuum, as an example. All with the understanding that the expectation of love and care extends to anyone – human or pet – who is living in your son’s care. Good conversation with a fresh foundation will help focus the decisions on the issue rather than the feelings of guilt. by Terri Pace Aromatic Essential Oils Essential oils can be used aromati-cally, topi-

cally, and internally*. The choice depends on your level of comfort and the benefits you seek. Open the cap of your essential oil bottle and simply take a deep breath to enjoy its most notable characteristic: It has an aroma. The aromatic chemistry found in the distilled form of plants, flowers, fruits, and spices is pro-cessed by our most powerful sense… our sense of smell. Our sense of smell is phenom-enal; allow me to share some in-triguing concepts: • The nose can distinguish more

than one trillion scents, ac-cording to new research; far more discriminating than pre-viously thought. (Source: nih.gov)

• As evidenced by our own ex-periences, smells can trigger memories, quickly transporting us to relive a past emotional encounter. Most people I have asked affirm that they have at least one significant smell memory.

• “Over the last decade or so, scientists have discovered that odor receptors are not solely confined to the nose, but found throughout body – in the liver, the heart, the kidneys and

even sperm – where they play a pivotal role in a host of phys-iological functions.” ~Smell Turns Up in Unexpected Places, NY Times October 13, 2014.

Imagine the possibilities of these concepts the next time you reach for your essential oils. How can we increase our own potential by using essential oils aromatically? Why Diffuse Essential Oils? Diffusing essential oils is a quick and easy way to enjoy the health benefits of essential oils. Here are my top three reasons to diffuse essential oils in your home, car, or workplace. 1. They cleanse the air in the room. Diffusing essential oils is a nat-ural way to remove unpleasant odors, rather than just masking them. And with less risk than other choices. Yes, there are lots of options for “air fresheners” available in stores but these syn-thetic solutions include undesir-able side effects. “Despite their popularity, there are concerns that these products increase in-door air pollution and pose a health risk, especially with long-term exposure.” ~Air Fresheners: Are They Safe?, poison.org/articles “According to Anne Steine-mann, a professor of civil engi-neering at the University of Melbourne who has extensively studied the health impacts of fra-granced household products, one-quarter of the ingredients in

air fresheners are classified as toxic or hazardous.” (Source: Considerable.com) YIKES!! 2. They minimize effects of sea-sonal and environmental threats. When seasonal threats occur, respiratory discomfort often ac-companies them. Diffusing es-sential oils helps to promote clear breathing, healthy respira-tory function, and are also cleansing for the body systems.* 3. They uplift the mood. One of the most well-re-searched benefits of essential oils is their ability to influence our moods and emotions. Numerous human clinical trials have val-idated their ability to improve mood, reduce feelings of anx-iousness and stress, and create a relaxing environment. Selecting a Diffuser There are different types of dif-fusers which create distinct ex-periences for you. To create the fine mist, they can use water and electronic frequencies (ultra-sonic), high or low powered streams of air (nebulizing or fan). There are options for colored lights, mist level, continuous and/or intermittent mist settings, and length of mist time. Simply select the one that meets the needs of the room in which it will be located. There are many factors which will determine which diffuser

continued and/or essential oil to choose and how many drops to add to your diffuser: How big is the room? How close are you to the diffuser? Do you want to set it and forget it or frequently change it up? Do you prefer strong or light aroma? Is it in a high-traffic area? Are you alone in the room or with other people? Do you prefer decorative or functional (or both)? Great answers to these questions starts with clarity of the goal you seek. Diffuser Blends by Room Kitchen – In this high traffic room, a powerful diffuser with a long run time of 6-8 hours or more is an excellent choice. Dif-fusing goal: Cleanse the air, uplift the mood, create warm/inviting atmosphere. Favorite oils to dif-fuse: 3 drops each of Green Mandarin and Grapefruit essen-tial oils, sometimes with a drop or two of Cassia essential oil to create warmth. Bedroom – The ideal diffuser for this room is quiet, low/no lights, and an intermittent and low set-ting for misting that will last the entire night. Diffusing goal: Com-fort and restful sleep environ-ment. Favorite essential oils to diffuse: Combine wood oils (Frankincense, Vetiver, and/or Ce-darwood) with flower oils (Roman Chamomile, Lavender, and/or Rose) to blanket the air with peace and serenity. Living Room – It is for living, gathering or simply to read a book. A versatile diffuser that is both decorative and functional is optimal. Diffusing goal: Create connection with family and friends. Oils to diffuse: Equal amounts of Peppermint and Wild Orange essential oils are uplifting and create a burst of energy and happiness. Office – Combine one drop of

each Peppermint, Frankincense, Lemon, Cypress, Sandalwood, and Melissa essential oils to dis-cover your personal expression of creativity. Best Practices for Diffusing Essential Oils Clean your diffuser periodi-cally to maximize the misting po-tential and extend the life of your device. Make sure you are using distilled water, if recommended. Using a diffuser is simple and creates many health benefits. However, just like a gym mem-bership, we must use it to enjoy the benefits! Note: Essential oils are safe, therapeutically effective and very affordable. However, not all essential oils are created equal. Be an educated consumer and use only certified pure, therapeutic grade essential oils for your family! Make sure the chemistry you need is in the bottle at your fingertips! * These statements have not been eval-

uated by the Food and Drug Administra-tion. The products mentioned are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or pre-vent any disease.

A Favorite Bird by John Taratunio

1928 - 2018

Once l had a pet turkey Who walked around kinda jerky

She weighed 20 pounds And made funny sounds

When near an oven she really got perky. In November this bird is a Blessing

On a table loaded with dressing In the middle of carving

When everyone is starving The procedure is anything but depressing

With a wing, a leg, or a thigh Topped with a piece of pumpkin pie

Is a typical way, to spend Thanksgiving Day

AND always keeps the family Close by.....
