GISELA Objectives and Goals
Ensure the long- term sustainability of the e-Infrastructure in the Latin American continentEnsure the long- term sustainability of the e-Infrastructure in the Latin American continent
Provide full support to the Virtual Research Communities spanning Latin America and Europe, using the e-Infrastructure.
Provide full support to the Virtual Research Communities spanning Latin America and Europe, using the e-Infrastructure.
Focus on two inter-related goals:
• Implement a sustainability model rooted on National Grid Initiatives (NGI), in association with CLARA, NRENs and collaborating with EGI.
• Provide the communities with the suited e-Infrastructure and Application-related Services required to improve the effectiveness of their research. This will address both:
The current EELA-2 User Communities whose research investigations are carried out at the Institution level or in small collaborations.
The larger Virtual Research Communities as Life & Earth Sciences, HEP

GISELA Work plan
• GISELA shall work out, with the CLARA Transition Team, the model of sustainability for the e-Infrastructure best adapted to the CLARA and LA NRENs environment;
• CLARA shall identify the NREN(s) that will be in charge of the Operation and Support of the e-Infrastructure, applying the business plan.
• GISELA basic duties: – Ensure the proper access of GISELA users to the e-Infrastructure resources;– Support Application developers and users over the whole process from deploying an
Application up to running it in production;– Organise the training best adapted to each VRC;– Support the use of the e-Infrastructure and Application-related Services already
developed in EELA-2 and helps the users in the validation of these services in the context of their Application;
– Participate in the development of new services requested by the VRCs and help in the test and validation of these services for user’s Applications.
Kick-off meeting - 21 to 24 September 2010 - San Luis Potosi (Mexico) 7
• GISELA shall provide and support basic (CORE) operation services. It will develop inter-operation agreement with GÉANT2, CLARA, the NRENs and the NGIs, in Europe and Latin America;

GISELA Networking Activities 1/3
Kick-off meeting - 21 to 24 September 2010 - San Luis Potosi (Mexico)
WP1 – ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT
WP1 has the task to coordinate, all along the course of the project, the implementation of the LGI model in close collaboration with all stake holders, JRUs or NGIs / EDGSs and NRENs. The participation of both CLARA and Grid experts in the management ensures osmosis between Grid computing and network activities.

WP2 - DISSEMINATION AND OUTREACH
WP2 organises Dissemination events focusing on Decision Makers interaction, to get their support for the LGI / NGI implementation, and promotes outreach actions to widely spread the usefulness of e-Infrastructures for different research communities.

WP3 – USER COMMUNITIES SUPPORT
WP3 supports VRCs by fostering collaboration among multidisciplinary groups, creates and maintains support tools to ease the utilisation of the e-Infrastructure, organises training activities tailored to each VRC needs and validates the services provided by WP4, WP5 and WP6 for future users.

WP4 – NGI/LGI INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES
WP5 – NETWORK RESOURCE PROVISION
WP4 and WP5 aim at the implementation of the three-layer infrastructure and network model (See Slide 11) that fits to Latin American organisational structure. They provide support to the VRCs by maintaining and operating a production quality multi-middleware grid empowered infrastructure.
• WP4 deals with both Grid-support Services and Grid Operation.
• WP5 maintains a central role ino Network-related activitieso Network engineering and operations support, integrated with the CLARA
Operations Centreo Management of the relationships between GISELA, CLARA, GÉANT and
NRENs in Latin America and Europeo Automation of the processes for network service provisioning for GISELA
VRCs.

WP6 – INFRASTRUCTURE AND APPLICATION-ORIENTED SERVICES FOR USER COMMUNITIES
The objective of WP6 is to enhance the grid experience of both users and system administrators by providing them with a portfolio of application-related and infrastructure-related Grid Services and the appropriate support to allow them to use these services adequately.
The portfolio of services is mainly formed by the services developed in the context of the EELA-2 project and new services to be developed in the context of GISELA. The latter may be general-purpose services catering to the needs of many different e-Science applications, as well as customised services that target particular VRCs.

• GISELA is VRCs oriented and will work to handover the infrastructure & skills to CLARA and the NRENS
• 78 institutions, most of them federated in JRUs, composed the EELA-2 consortium
• 19 institutions constitute the GISELA consortium, representing their country
• EELA-2 triggered the JRUs
• GISELA should consolidate them and trigger / foster the creation of NGIs (National Grid Initiative) or EDGS (Equivalent Domestic Grid Structure)
• The EC contribution in EELA-2 was 2.1 Meuro
• In Gisela it will be 850 KEuro
Kick-off meeting - 21 to 24 September 2010 - San Luis Potosi (Mexico) 33
GISELA is not EELA-3
• EELA-2 aimed at building a production quality e-Infrastructure and at attracting the highest possible number of members and applications

Recommendations and wishes - 1/3
• Long-term sustainability: GISELA inheritance / legacy (prepared since EELA)
– Implementation of the CLARA – EELA-2 model
– National Grid Initiatives (NGI) or Equivalent Domestic Grid Structures (EDGS) should be created
– e-Science structures highly desirable
– Local funding more than ever mandatory!!!!!!!!!!
Kick-off meeting - 21 to 24 September 2010 - San Luis Potosi (Mexico) 38
• GISELA e-Infrastructure overloaded by Old (EELA-2) and new (VRCs) “clients”
• Key role of CLARA & NRENS since day 1 of the Project
• Non-responsive Partners not welcome
