May 13-15First staged in 1966, Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildensternare Dead gets its latest local reincarnation with The AbsolutelyFabulous Theatre Connection. The dark existentialist comedy tellsthe story of two minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet andtheir inability to control their destinies, with scenes from the originalHamlet interspersed with the action. This means that some of themajor players in Shakespeare’s tragedy take on minor roles here, while two minor fools in Hamlet become the stage’s primeprotagonists. It is all part of the upside-down and uncontrollablychaotic world Stoppard creates with this play, in which not only theking, Claudius, has difficulty distinguishing between Rosencrantz andGuildenstern, but they themselves do as well. The AbsolutelyFabulous Theatre Connection production is due to travel on a culturalexchange to Shanghai in August this year. Rosencrantz andGuildenstern are Dead runs from May 13-15 at the Sai Wan Ho CivicCentre Theatre at 7:30pm, with an additional matinee show on May15 at 2:30pm. Tickets are $160 and $100 from Urbtix: 2734 9009.
