Physical Characteristics

Serbia is landlocked. The closest sea is the Adriatic Sea.

Serbia is located on the Balkan Peninsula

The north is covered by the Danube Plain. This plain is fertile and good for farming.

The south is more mountainous and contains three mountain ranges: the Balkans, the Rhodopes, and the Dinaric Alps.

The Danube River is valuable to Serbia because it provides access to inland Europe for trade. Because Serbia is landlocked the Danube is Serbia’s most valuable water trade route.

Culture

Serbian, a Serbo-Croatian, language is spoken in Serbia.

Approximately 84% of the population are Orthodox Christians. This unites the country through a primary religion.

Serbian cuisine is a mix of Turkish, Mediterranean, and Central European. This is because migration from many of these areas is easy.

Traditions & Customs

A traditional Serbian dance is the kolo, a circle dance.

On Christmas Eve Serbians burn an oak log on their fire. This is called the Badnjak and is similar to the yule log in other cultures.

The Zapis is a sacred tree in Serbia.

A cross is carved into the bark of a Zapis.

Church services are often held around these trees.

Serbian Christians celebrate the Slava.

In the Slava each family venerates their chosen patron saint on a feast day.

Most of these traditions are common throughout the country. This unites them culturally.

History

The first government in Serbia was the Byzantine Empire.

Serbia was conquered by the Turkish Empire in 1459.

The Turks prevented Serbian involvement in the Renaissance by preventing contact with the west.

It was annexed by the Ottoman Empire in 1540.

Serbia became independent in 1878 following the Russo-Turkish War.

When Austria declared war on Serbia, World War I officially had begun. This declaration of war was caused by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Austrian Crown Prince.

In 1941 Hitler and the Nazis began their attack on Serbia

After World War II Serbia became a part of communist Yugoslavia.

Serbia is now a republic.The Serbian Coat of Arms
