We were recently invited to the Legacy Gala a few weeks ago that benefited the Crystal

Mountain Legacy Art Park. I was just happy to support the arts and have a fun date night with my husband. I had no idea what a profound effect this memorable evening would have on me.

The Gala honored George Zimmermann, who has just retired as the head of Travel Michigan and is responsible for spearheading a marketing team with a little campaign you may have heard of—Pure Michigan. The quote above is an opener from one of the many successful commercials read by famous Michigander Tim Allen. Incidentally, Allen is most proud of the campaign, above all else that he’s achieved. George was honored by the Art Park Board of Directors because of the significant positive impact the campaign has had on the state, sharing with the world the story of Michigan, its arts, history, culture and natural beauty. In 2013 alone, Pure Michigan attracted 4 million out-of-state visitors who spent $1.2 billion at Michigan businesses! Not too shabby, huh!

As Zimmerman quoted the trees in his acceptance speech, his words really resonated with me. I sat captivated by all that he had to say, and reflected on the campaign timeframe. The Pure Michigan launch began in 2006 in only three regions, including our region at the time of DC/Maryland. I recalled vividly how while we were sipping our morning coffee together and watching TV, my husband, a Michigan native, would jump up with admiration whenever one of the campaign’s commercials would air. “It’s Michigan, that’s Michigan,” followed by stories of the Caribbean-esque beaches with crystal-clear water, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Petoskey Stones, and Fall on Mackinaw Island. And even though he had lived in Maryland since 1983, he was so proud all over again of his Michigan roots, heritage and the beauty he had left behind.

It dawned on me that a large part of the reason we were sitting in that room, as George was being honored, was actually because of that campaign. The commercials had romanced us from afar to move here, raise our baby daughter and live a simpler, less hurried but more fulfilling life, which we did in 2010. It’s funny

how everything happens for a reason, and I am in awe that the trees remind us there are bigger things than us.

So as the magical transformation of the seasons occurs, revel in all its splendor and glory. The endless leaves saunter down silently in their hues of blazing gold and fiery reds. It’s harvesting time for the farmers—where flowers once bloomed, trees bear bountiful fruits. Time falls back, the air is crisp and Autumn has arrived. For many hardcore Michiganders, this is their favorite season.

At home, it’s almost a nostalgic time. It is the start of life becoming normal. (Kids go back to school—woo-hoo!) Fabulous Fall is weekend football games, cozy sweaters, blazing up the fireplace, more snuggly hugs, the beginning of planning the holiday season and treasured family gatherings.

With this issue, we embrace all that nature has to offer. Be mesmerized by Craig Sterken’s stunning photography that captures the season beautifully. Chase the Colors and head north to experience the Tunnel of Trees M-119 for your first time or your twentieth. Visit inside the wilderness water view home of Dan and Meridith Falconer, who share a new world of unique designing possibilities with rustic, repurposed, raw materials and interior style elements.

To inspire your fall wardrobe, we styled radio personalities Ron Jolly and Colleen Wares-McClelland on an 80-degree day in the finest town and country attire from Bahle’s on a shoot at the spectacular Black Star Farms Winery. (Plus, we had a blast drinking wine of course.) Speaking of wine, we take a trip to the French Side of Cass Street at Bistro Foufou, and indulge in some French comfort food and wine and culture.

So as the sun sets and the house quiets down, pour some warm apple cider, grab a sweater, curl up on the couch and enjoy reading us cover to beautiful cover.

The Petoskey location was the closest, and while that’s close to Harbor Springs, it’s not as convenient. “When you give to Goodwill, you’re reinvesting in your own community,” says Leah Bagdon McCallum, Goodwill’s advancement director. IGA store co-owner Suzanne Hug explains, “When Goodwill approached us and laid out the concept, and what they do in our community with the money raised from these donations, we thought it would be a great idea.” And with the location right next to the recycle bins, “It’s also an added convenience to our shoppers.” As the seasons change, this is a great time to clean out those closets and fill them up!

Flower PowerLocal beloved florist Derek Woodruff’s resume is blooming again! And he already has the prestigious Michigan Floral Association’s 2014 “Designer of the Year Award” under his belt! The Floral Underground and Fleur Couture Cabaret owner just won first runner-up at the 47th Annual Sylvia Cup Design Competition, held Aug. 16 in Marco Island, Florida. The competition is the floral industry’s longest running, national annual floral design competition, and only 25 participants qualified. It’s the U.S. floral industry’s only LIVE national design competition, so the pressure is palatable! It’s so like an episode right out of a reality TV contest—and he’s done that, too, on Logo Network’s “The Arrangement”! He had to use talent, creativity and a whole lotta wow, and with a Studio 54 theme, the mega-talented dancer had no problem with inspiration. Congrats, Derek!

Branching Out Harrington’s by the Bay and Sorrelina owners John McGee and Glen Harrington are planting more roots this fall. Along with a group of investors, they purchased the old TraVino restaurant building and property on the East side of town that has been vacant since closing over a year and a half ago. They are already turning over a new leaf with renovations underway, and just like a new addition, the name is being closely guarded! (Or, they haven’t figured it out yet?) One thing we do know with the quality, service and wonderful dining experiences we all enjoy in their current restaurants, we are in for another delicious treat!

Pop Up DinnersYou may have heard the term “Pop Up Dinners” recently. They are inventive, engaging dining experiences in our community that promote Goodwill’s Mi Fresh Start job training program to mentor program participants. They have been lucky to partner with some of the hottest TC restaurants (so far, Red Ginger and The Cooks’ House). Mi Fresh Start is held at the Kirkbride Hall, a renovated historic building of the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Working alongside professionals, Mi Fresh Start program trainees benefit greatly from a shared experience with the region’s greatest culinary leadership. “Training in a live classroom environment under chefs of this caliber represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for individuals with disadvantages and disabilities,” said Brandon Seng, director of Goodwill’s food programs. The goal is one Pop Up Dinner every month; check for updates.

secret recipe:GRILLED PORK PORTERHOUSE WITH A TART CHERRY BBQ SAUCE

Pre-heat your grill to ensure that the briquettes are red hot.

Season to your liking, let sit at room temperature for 30 mins.

Place on the grill and rotate and flip regularly. It keeps the fats and juices moving on the inside of the meat. I like to cook pork to medium about 135-140 degrees before it is removed from the grill.

While the pork is resting make a batch of your best mashed potatoes to serve as a side.

Toms Tips

Set the seasoned meat on a cooling rack over a cookie sheet; it will draw moisture out of the meat and cause it to drip a little, ensuring the meat cooks at an even pace and be extra juicy.Let the meat rest for 5 minutes before serving, this will let the juices in the meat disperse back into the meat and prevent the dreaded juices all over the plate from the first cut into the steak.

Tart Cherry Bbq

6 oz. onion, small dice 2 oz. sesame oil 1 oz. garlic puree ½ tsp. ginger puree 6 oz. brown sugar 3 oz. molasses 2 oz. worcestershire sauce 1 oz. sherry vinegar

20 oz. tart cherries, frozen 16 oz. water 12 oz. ketchup 8 oz. strawberry preserves ½ tsp. cumin seeds, lightly toasted pinch cayenne pepper ½ tsp. salt

Directions

1. Sauté the onions, garlic and ginger in sesame oil until translucent over medium low heat.

2. Add brown sugar, molasses, worcestershire and sherry vinegar and cook until brown sugar dissolves.

3. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 25 minutes.

4. If you would like the sauce a little more “stick to your ribs” you can mix an equal amount of cornstarch and water and thicken the bbq sauce at this time.

5. Season with salt.

6. Use immediately or store in refrigerate in a covered container for 1 week.

This bbq sauce is also good with salmon, chicken or any other meat that comes off the grill.

Falling For FallWhile many of us are enjoying the summer months, warm breezes, sunny days and time spent with family and friends in beautiful Northern Michigan, it is once again time for a season change and Fall is just around the corner. With that in mind it is also harvest season for our wine industry hauling in yet another crop of delicious wine vinifera. Many who are familiar with the wines of France know of the harvest end Beaujolais Nouveau made in a fresh style and released from the current harvest. Locally we have what I consider a “sleeper” red wine, the Gammy Noir from Chateau Grand Traverse. This wine made from 100% Gammy, (which is the grape Beaujolais is made of) a bit lighter than most traditional reds with flavors tart cherry, dark plum and pepper. Being that this wine is a bit lighter in body in allows for pairing with a wide range of foods from cheeses to pizza, salmon, grilled chicken or just simply porch sipping. Give this wine a try this late summer / early fall, and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

If you’ve never had a French Fling, or met a true Parisian, let us expand your horizons. If you include the French Riviera and the sovereign city-state of Monaco, France is the most visited country in the world. Paris alone is named the world’s most romantic city. It’s famous of course for its Wine, Bordeaux, Beaujolais and Champagne, to name a few, and Cheese (Fromage)—there are more than 400 types, including Brie, always paired with a baguette! France has also given the world incredible artists and monuments. Claude Monet invented French Impressionist painting. Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” sits in the French Museé Du Louvre. The Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower are world-famous landmarks, and in 1886 the French actually gifted the Statue of Liberty that graces New York Harbor to the United States! Ooh la la, who knew? So come join the French Revolution at Foufou!

The owner/chef is the charismatic Frenchman Guillaume Hazaël-Massieux, and he was born in Paris! (Impressive, huh?) His mother, whom he calls a Culinary Master, inspired him to cook. Later, he moved to the West Indies, his father’s native country. You may already be familiar with him if you have dined at La Becasse near Glen Arbor, which Guillaume has owned with his wife Brooke for 10 years. The couple lives close by on a farm with daughters Margot (12), Lizzy (6), and poodle Gus!

Guillaume is classically trained by Paul Bocuse, who is considered the greatest French chef of the 20th century! (In the restaurant, look for the photograph of Bocuse with a very young Guillaume in 1993.) Guillaume perfected his craft in France, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. He even spent time teaching cooking in the military before eventually landing in Grand Rapids in 1996 where he met his wife.

After years of prestigious culinary positions, the opportunity arose to purchase La Becasse. It was actually already a French restaurant, so how perfect? (La Becasse is the French word for Woodcock, and the restaurant name is a word play on the original name of the previous restaurant.)

So when the time came to name his new restaurant, Guillaume decided to keep the “bird” theme. Foufou means crazy in French, but it is also the Creole nickname for a Hummingbird and used as a term of endearment for Crazy in the West Indies.

And Bistro in French means an everyday place that is not pretentious. “I wanted this to be a fun and very approachable place, where you can come in and just grab an espresso, or have a glass of French wine at the bar,” shares Guillaume.

Situated in the heart of bustling Downtown, Bistro Foufou offers the very European feeling of outdoor seating, right on the sidewalk like the happening restaurants in Paris on the famous Avenue des Champs Élysées. Take in the ambiance, enjoy a glass of wine with friends and fabulous food, all while you people watch and are seen having a French frolic like a true Parisian. Ooh la la!

Inside, the bar catches your attention first. It’s adorned with French wooden wine crates, serves only the finest of French wines and is the only place you can indulge in French beer On Tap. The incredible wine list is like a drive through the countryside of France that lingers in every region! And if you are a certified wine connoisseur—Je t’aime—you will fall in love for sure! There are French Cognacs, of course, and some aptly named cocktails to try are The Arc De Triomphe and the Metro De Paris. Happy hours from 4 to 6 p.m. are indeed spent being happy here; for a mere $3, you can have a glass of delicious French wine! Spring another $3 for hand-cut frites, have another glass and you’re still under $10! Now that is Foufou Good!

The food is Classic, Simple French food, and specials are many staples like oysters, grains, bacon, poached eggs, beet salad, stews and delicious bread. The cheese is local from Leelanau Cheese, also French! Like most, they try to stay in season so everything is served fresh. There are bolder flavors like Steak Tartar, Oysters, and of course you will still find Escargot on the menu, which is a favorite of 6-year-old daughter Lizzy!

The Culinary Tour de France starts again this Fall. Don’t wait to make your reservations for a five-course dinner with five Wines for $65 a person including tax and tip! (Every one sold out last year!) And if you attend any elegant event at The City Opera House, the food and drink is also French-inspired with a partnership with Bistro FouFou.

Do you believe everything happens for a reason? We do! Our visit to Guillaume’s Foufou also included the food photo shoot, so all the culinary cuisine was prepared especially for us and it needed to be eaten! (Ooh la la!) Yes, this was a terrible dilemma for our waistlines only! As dish by delicious dish was lovingly delivered from the busy kitchen and proudly laid out on a platter in front of us, our eyes were wide, the aromas were delectable and our mouths were watering in tempting ancipation! From the incredible Beet Salad, the Parisian Gnocchi with amazing sauce, a Pork Chop to die for, all topped off with a Berry Crisp dessert à la mode of course! We truly experienced our French revolution, our taste buds were tantalized and culture evoked! After one visit, you will say J’adore Bistro Foufou and Guillaume will be your new BFF. Merci beaucoup!

Meet Photographer Craig Sterken

Growing up in the state of Michigan has provided me with a love for its beauty and a great appreciation for the outdoors. Many of my fondest memories involve small boats on inland lakes, camping in the woods, and sunsets over Lake Michigan beaches.

Woodland, lakes, and beaches. In Michigan you’re never far from any of these. Each of these providing subtle to stunning beauty for the observant viewer.

My passion for photography has led me to spend countless hours not only practicing the craft, but also working to capture those scenes that show my appreciation for the beauty that Michigan has to offer. There are moments in our lives where we view a sunset over a quiet lake or a lighthouse shining like a star in the night, guiding sailors to safety. We take in these scenes and wish these moments would last forever. As we all know, those moments are fleeting. My goal is to capture those moments as best I can, for no two scenes are ever the same. It’s my pursuit of those moments that keep me going. Sometimes succeeding and sometimes not.

As fall briskly breezes in, head north to M-119 to experience the famous Tunnel of Trees. Like a movie set from “The Hobbit,” leafy branches are everywhere alive with glorious colors. They sparkle in ever-changing hues; aimlessly arched and entwined like arms hugging high overhead, creating a magical gleaming canopy entrancing drivers and cyclists alike. Just travelling along the road feels like a mystical adventure, eyes wide ogling gleefully. The air blows crisp as leaves dance to the wind’s whistle, and high along the bluff, the road hugs, curves and wows at every turn, giving way to peeks below of the glistening water of Lake Michigan. This isn’t just taking the road less travelled. (In fact, it is travelled by thousands.) This is nature’s momentous journey that delights the soul.

Just the Facts: You pick up the M-119 taking a left at the north end of Petoskey, drive though the idyllic town of Harbor Springs, and when you’re north of Harbor Springs, M-119 becomes the 20-mile Tunnel of Trees. Watch out for sharp twists and turns—the Tunnel of Trees boasts 137 in all with Horse Shoe Bend and Devil’s Elbow being the most white-knuckling. Drive slowly and make sure to take in the historical markers. Along the way, these markers will enrich your knowledge of the area.

What’s a Millage? On Tuesday, Nov. 4 TCAPS will request a renewal of its longstanding non-homestead operating millage. What is a millage, you ask? An operating millage provides a large portion of the funds needed to run a school system. TCAPS serves more than 10,000 students, covers 300 square miles of Benzie, Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties and employs 1,900 area residents. So the millage pays for books and classroom materials, staff salaries, utilities and other basic operational needs.

Here are a few other points:

1 It is not paid by most taxpayers, and those who

do pay would see no change to their current tax rate.

2 It is a property tax on most second homes

and businesses.

3 It has been in place since 1999 and is required

to receive the state’s full foundation allowance per pupil.

Designing for the 4-legged family membersFor those of us that love our pets and consider them part of the family, incorporating storage for all of their needs is just as important as any other item in the house.

Items that are often overlooked in home design, but can be difficult to find just the right spot for after you move in might

include water and food dishes, doggie beds or cat trees, food, leashes, shampoo and brushes and medicines to name a few.

If your pets are like mine, they want to be wherever you are. This means the bed needs to be in your main living space. We have built areas into banquette seating for the smaller of the animals. This can give them a very “den like” atmosphere that most furry friends love to snuggle in.

For their supplies, I try to incorporate just the right storage into the laundry or homeowner entry of the home. Putting a double pull out waste bin in the laundry not only gives you means to handle the dryer lint, but also use the second bin for storing their food. Using a shorter cabinet, held off the floor at the appropriate height allows a spot for the water and food dish to be tucked away. We may plan a spot under counter for kennels as needed. Also using a row of small hooks or a basket in your built in bench seat for leashes, collars, and coats is a good way to store those items.

For the feline lovers, a challenge is the litter box. Well, no worries, designing a good spot under counter with a creative door having an appropriate sized cutout can add a little personalization while concealing the box. The door will open so you can clean as needed.

So, love them as much as you do and give them some spaces that are designed just for them.

Welcome into Dan, Meridith, Isla and Emmett

Falconer’s elegant home. It’s a deceiving place on

first glance. You turn down a dirt road and it’s the

only house at the dead end, appearing to be nestled

deep in the woods. The house sits beautifully on a

circular driveway, framed by the forest of green.

But take a little walk around the right side of the

home and you’ll find a sprawling outside living area

of grand proportions with a full-size stone fireplace,

couches for lounging, a complete kitchen with a

built-in grill, and a rarely found brick-fire oven—all

of this is framed by stunning patio landscaping.

The lush, thick branches part and give way to a

startlingly surprising view. In the near distance, the

blue glistening of the East Bay stares back in all its

awe-inspiring beauty.

In fact, this view of the Bay can be seen from almost

every room in the house through contemporary,

black-framed windows.

So, the Falconers have a perfect balance of wilderness and waterfront, high up in their own little Robinson Crusoe world. “I like seeing the water, and I like the quiet setting,” says Dan. It’s private and so very quiet, and is frequented by an overabundance of deer, rabbits, family and friends! This is a house of elegance, unique style, function and fun.

After a year and a half of building, the home was ready in November 2012. Its inaugural event was Thanksgiving dinner for the entire extended family!

Both Dan and Meridith are TC natives. After marrying in 2004 as their family started to bloom, they began to outgrow their old home. Emmett’s arrival took over the only guest room. Isla was ready to start hitting the pavement on a bike, and their home had no kid-friendly yard.

The dilemma began: Find a new house that would fit their family, or build one to their specific needs and desires. Meridith was against building at first, but she eventually realized that it would take more work to remodel a house than just start from scratch.

sometimes is exhausting and overwhelming for new construction. It could have been a blessing or a curse having to use a certain builder, and the Falconers had a terrific experience. “We loved our project manager, and he just retired,” says Dan.

Here’s a fun fact: They bought all the lighting for their entire house from the Lighting Store when it was closing down in 2011. “We had boxes of lights before we had a hole in the ground,” laughs Meridith. Many of their home design choices were focused around the lighting they had chosen.

Meridith is passionate about cooking, and the kitchen is gorgeously designed by the team at Bay Cabinetry; owner Sandy helped them immensely in all kinds of design decisions. It is effortlessly elegant, with classic and unique elements that make it just outstanding in a very unassuming way. The exposed beams are reclaimed barn wood, the countertops are matte black sandstone, and the farm sink adds warmth. The room has the old, worn-in appeal of a beloved kitchen that has been the heart of a home for many years. The center of attention here is the dramatic Blackened-Steel Hood. Custom-made by Ace Welding, this sits grandly in place over the Wolf Stove. Over in the other corner, the huge Sub-Zero looms, hiding its yummy wares.

To prove the theory that this home was built with function in mind, the pantry is actually a walk-through, perfectly organized by food group and specific containers for every morsel! Walk-through here is the operative word; the pantry connects all the way through to the mud room and the door to the garage! As Dan explains perfectly, “You walk in the house from the garage with bags of groceries, plop them down and you’re already in the pantry!”

Off the mud room is another brilliant example of form meeting function. The laundry area walks through to the couple’s master suite huge walk-in closet! The surprise is also the long, rustic and exposed wall built to add character to their private wing of the home; this gives a New York Loft feel and oozes a cool factor!

Off that is the master bath, and once again you’re surprised by the bathtub, a modern-edge take on the classic claw-foot tub that you’d find in an old Victorian house. There are warmer shades of wood, and the countertops are granite leather-finished that gleam just slightly. The floor was very specifically designed by Dan, who wanted a large octagon marble tile to contrast with the smaller one in the shower. He couldn’t find this, so they made it from 6-inch squares with a special jig.

The main living area of the house (besides the kids’ huge playroom upstairs, and the adults’ basement playrooms that include a full-sized pool table, card table, pinball machine and even a complete home theatre room that seats at least 12) is refined and elegant. Walk through the front door and you’ll be greeted by dark-stained Birch wood floors throughout. As Dan described, they wanted a “clean-lined, primitive, re-purposed look but then thrown in with shiny

things.” This works beautifully and is definitely like a trip through a modern, coveted Pottery Barn wish list.

But there are no run-of-the-mill catalog items here. The huge, long and low couch that frames the entire window was custom-made, and they actually designed the entire living around room it! The dining room table was found at the exclusive ABC home store in New York, where movie stars outfit their brownstones with interior designers in tow! But then there is a cool, old wood bowl that they found at Wilson Antiques, so everything is a little unexpected and refreshing.

This couple has a unique style, and it shows. On their long and arduous quest for the perfect couch, table, linens or home accessories, they came across Ultra Chic urban boutiques and furnishing vendors in Chicago and New York.

In fact, their eclectic, eye-opening journey has inspired them to open their own store right here in Traverse City. “We realized a need for something that isn’t offered in town currently, our version of a lifestyle store.” They already have a location—ironically, where the Old Lighting Store used to be on Hall Street in what is now known as the Warehouse District. The store name (drumroll, please!) is Wood + Cloth. When we met with Dan and Meridith, they had just returned from a New York buying trip!

As a transplanted East Coast city girl myself who has walked through their stunning home, I can’t wait to see what they wow us with there!

Bahle’s Suttons Bay The earliest photo of the Bahles’s store from 1878. Bahle’s of Sutton's Bay has been a tradition in the retail community of northern Michigan since 1876. Founded by Lars Bahle who came to Michigan in the 1860’s from Norway. He had 11 children, and in the 1920’s his son Otto and wife Lena took over the store. The wooden floor, counter and stools are still in place today. Bahle’s is one of the oldest family businesses in the state with the fourth generation operating the business.

Autumn CalmI was already huffing and puffing from the short yet steep hike. After a brief climb, I passed through the tree line and the sky opened above me. Beneath my feet the rolling dunes were bathed in a soft golden light, brushed with the delicate fibers of early fall. The trail turned north and ended at the crest of a distant dune, crowned with a cherry tree draped in autumn gold. I closed my eyes and breathed the sweet scent of Lake Michigan as her aroma meandered up the camber of the dune, filtered in the fading grasses. The evening surf sang in the distance. I took of my shoes and moved the soft, cool sand beneath my toes, relishing in the moment and storing the memory for the dark, cold days to come.
