Bath BurpMarch 2012 MUSIC * POETRY * ART Issue 10
BIRTHDAY ISSUE
WE’re ONE YEAR OLD !!
- EXTRA LONG CD -
Editorial
Happy Birthday we cry. Welcome to this expensively
gift-wrapped edition of the Burp, now one whole year
old, teething, vomiting and screaming all night long
to interrupt your ugly, prosaic nightmares. I wish
to use this here word space to do nothing more than
thank Ben, Heidi, Bob and Lewis for their dedication
towards what is essentially a twenty-page hard copy
of a drunken idea. To all the contributors over the
last year, a fond fondle, and to all future entries I
would like to send a folded A4 love letter I hope the
teacher won’t make me read out at the front of the
class.
Whittle your quills my artisan friends, I’ll be
needing another year of printed ink.

Five Haiku
salt storm-
we toast the galaxy
with margaritas
Van Gogh’s wheatfield
the width of a hand fills
with crows
Monet’s pain–
the shadows of haybales
lengthening the sunset
the heartbreak of others
a plane’s contrail catches up
with a flight of rooks
fractus clouds
the last of the single malt
smoothes out the edges

Face Off
Underneath your hat,
Inside the soft fur lining of your coat
There has to be some other bloke
The one I fell in love with
Maybe he’s been eaten
Or lying in some far off prison
Bleeding, beaten…
Waiting for me to come and rescue him
Or perhaps he’s got amnesia
Propped up on some Russian bar
Or locked in the boot
Of a mockney mafia mobster’s car
Breathing out of bullet holes.
Poor bastard, hoping against hope
That I’ll see through his obvious disguise
And realise that the man I love
Is no longer staring out
Of those dark brown eyes
But the victim of a body swap.
And all this time I have been searching
For this guy who’s wise and charming
But all I find is Mr. Passive Aggressive
Depressive, strange and mildly alarming
And not the man I love.
Who (as I speak) may be washed up
On some sand smug island
Or swinging naked from an electric pylon
While this impostor sticks his smile on
And makes it thin and weak.
And I am gonna have to face
That the ‘you’ behind your name
Has been covertly replaced
By some secret government agency
Who have jettisoned your body like flotsam into space
After they skilfully removed your face
And stuck it on a WANKER.
Ceiling
When I look up at my bedroom ceiling
I will often smile and think of you
Not just because of the great sex
But because you had ostentatious coving too
Birmingham
Clipped my pigeon’s wings today
Set him free over Birmingham
Watched him fall like a dart from the sky
Must have clipped too far;
Standing here with his wings
In my hands.
