From the Principal It just can’t be Week 4 of Term 3 already! Our term is flying by and before we know
it we will all be down on the school oval cheering on our favourite fac!on and
enjoying the music of our visi!ng DJ, Kathy Rimmer, who will make a guest
appearance for us for the day.
In the next week you should receive an e-mail from us which will be this year’s
Parent Survey. We are required to do these surveys every two years, but more than
that we want to find out all of those things that we are doing right for your family
and also give you the opportunity to let us know if there are areas where we can do
be/er. Our 2018 results were very posi!ve and we all believe we have grown from
there so it will be very interes!ng to see what the data tells us. I will publish the
results in an upcoming newsle/er.
Our staff mee!ng yesterday was very interes!ng with three of our teachers working
with small groups of staff to upskill them in basic coding and in the use of simple
robo!cs. U!lising the high level of exper!se we have on staff in using technology to
engage our students is a great way of ensuring that all teachers are knowledgeable
and confident users of the materials we have.
I am really impressed by the dedica!on of those students and staff who are staying
back a6er school to work on an item for our 50th
Anniversary Assembly in Term 4.
This commitment is similar to that shown by students and staff in areas like our cross
-country athle!cs and the AFLW which have all trained before and a6er school the
last few years. While COVID-19 has meant that our celebra!ons for our 50th
year
have been more muted we do plan a big assembly and parent event in the middle of
Term 4 and there is also the tree outside the library where families and staff were
able to purchase a leaf to celebrate their connec!on to Bateman Primary.
I have been informed that our external review of school opera!ons will happen at
some stage in Term 4. It will be interes!ng to see what other school principals make
of the way we operate and the close connec!ons we have with our community. I will
publish their findings in our newsle/er and on our website once we receive them.
Our Year 5/6 families had a Camp Informa!on session last week in which the running
of the camp and the student requirements were outlined. Although I was not able to
a/end I am told that the mee!ng was well-a/ended and informa!ve and we are very
confident that this year’s adventure at Woodman Point will be a fantas!c experience
for 92 students, 4 staff and 4 parents.
It is great to have our assemblies back to normal and lots of family and friends
a/ending them. With Book Week and our Open Night and all of the events coming
up in the near future I hope to see you at some of them.
PEAC UPDATE: There have been some delays in organising PEAC tes!ng due to
COVID 19 in Melbourne. Please rest assured that all Year 4 students will be tested
before the end of the year. We will keep you informed of any further updates as
they come to hand.

If you ordered a 2019 Graduation USB; these are
available from the school office.

This is a !mely reminder that there are students in the school who have a nut allergy – all nuts. This means that if
they comes into contact with nuts directly or someone who has been handling a nut product, they will suffer a
severe reac!on - anaphylaxis.
With this in mind, we have put a number of strategies into place in the classroom which includes washing of hands
a6er each break, ensuring students only eat their food and limi!ng contact between students at ea!ng !mes.
We would also like to ask that considera!on be taken when making your child’s lunch to limit the number of nut
products in the classroom.
Your considera!on in this ma/er would be greatly appreciated. If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to
contact us at school.

Being Good Digital Ci(zens
Bateman Community, the Building and Grounds Commi/ee are a6er some help. We have drawn up a rough dra6
and have some fantas!c ideas to re-invent the garden between the Junior and Senior blocks, however we now
need someone that can make it happen.
We will need a scaled design drawn up and quotes to carry out the work. If you or someone you know has a land-
scaping and/or design business we would love to talk to you.
Please contact Jenni in the school office for further informa!on.
We believe that it is vitally important that the school and parent/caregivers work together as a team to inform and
teach the children how to be good digital ci!zens who are able to use the devices and internet appropriately.
Unfortunately we are not always going to be able to protect the children from all inappropriate/unpleasant content
that can be found and so providing them with the tools on how to manage it is essen!al The program that we run
at the school includes:
• A Cyber Safety program is run at the beginning of each year that focuses on many different aspects from the
impact of their digital footprint to how to use the device and internet appropriately and what to do should
they be faced with cyber bullying. We also look at the Appropriate Usage Agreement to reinforce those
expecta!ons that all students have agreed to follow. We also discuss what cons!tutes an E-Breach and the
possible consequences that may occur. The teachers will also use scenarios to reinforce decision making
processes and choices with cyber bullying and safety. The teachers then regularly have ‘teaching moments’
where they are able to reinforce what has been taught extensively at the beginning of the year. They also
regularly remind the students about appropriate behaviour when using the devices.
• We have a Cyber Safety Week in Term One where there is a week of ac!vi!es that the students engage with
to learn about how to be safe.
• Incorporated into that is an annual Cyber Safety presenta!on for all Yr 5 and 6 students as they are the most
ac!ve with social media and communica!on. It is run for all years every second year. There is also an annual
parent informa!on session to assist parents in keeping informed and how to help your child to have
conversa!ons about these topics and what to do when confronted with cyber bullying.
• At !mes we may have an incursion with a group such as Constable Care to perform on the topic of cyber
safety.
Having conversa!ons with your child/ren about these topics is another important aspect to help demys!fy them
and to be able to give them strategies when they are confronted with cyber bullying or sex!ng. The website set up
by the eSafety Commissioner - www.esafety.gov.au has a lot of good informa!on about how to have these
conversa!ons as well as to provide parents with up-to-date informa!on.
Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the school to discuss this further.

Epilepsy Incursion—Monday 17 August
Lauren Buckels from Epilepsy WA will be coming to our school next week to
share with the children about epilepsy and how they can help another student
if they see them having a seizure. Through the use of picture books, cartoons
and a quiz for the older children, they will learn about this common
neurological condi!on and how important it is that we accept and support
those children living with epilepsy. Parents are welcome to a/end.
There will be two groups K – 2: 9 – 9.20am and 3 – 6: 9.25 – 10am.
To access an excellent booklet that explains the basics of epilepsy as well as providing explana!ons of some of the
more common seizure types, please follow this link: h/ps://www.epilepsywa.asn.au/about-epilepsy/
Week 3 was a huge, yet exci!ng week for us in sport! Last Tuesday, we walked to
Brentwood Primary School to compete in the Interschool Cross Country Carnival.
Even though we versed some tough schools, we s!ll did Bateman very proud by
having four students finish on the podium.
The Interschool Cross Country team worked extremely hard this year and most
importantly they all showed wonderful sportsmanship and support towards one
another.
Congratula!ons to Noah C (first), Mitchell H (third), Noah R (third) and Riddhi T
(third) who all placed on the podium.
The compe!!veness con!nued when we competed at the Interschool
Hockey Carnival on Thursday. This carnival took place at Perth Hockey Sta-
dium and we were lucky enough to play on the same turf that they use at
the Olympics!
Our two teams both did amazing with team BLACK finishing tenth and
team ORANGE finishing third! This was an incredible effort!
I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the staff
and parents who came down to these carnivals to
celebrate and cheer the students on as they competed.
As the countdown to athle!cs begins, we are star!ng to
look for parent helpers. If you are available to help at the
carnival please see Miss B.

• Preloved gardening tools in good working order e.g.: small, hand held shovel, diggers (weeders) and large
spades, along with hedge shears, secateurs and pruning loppers. We are looking to increase and replace
some of our tools especially for our Busy Bees. Any of the above tools would be gratefully accepted.
• Someone capable of placing our Bush Tucker garden room signs in the ground
• Someone arty who wants to create some large anthills for our Educa!on Room.
Huge Thanks

collected and will be painted a bright orange and repurposed with some plants for our inner school gardens.
• To Trent and Antwon who have finished all the stand-up desks in the Educa!on Room. They look fantas!c!
• My mulching mums who have worked !relessly weeding and now re-mulching the Herbs and Healing garden.
Did You Know
That Kings Park has just finished
developing a blue kangaroo paw, which
will be on sale in 2021. Have a look in
the wheelbarrow garden at our
beau!ful purple kangaroo paws with
spikes that are nearly 66 tall! Please be
very careful with all our gardens at the
moment, as most of the spring flowers
are shoo!ng up their flower stems. Li/le feet will and can crush the delicate new growth.
Busy Bees
Looking forward to mee!ng all the Year 2 parents on Friday 21/8/20. Come down and make some new friends -
don’t be shy and remember that most people are new too. Don’t forget to bring your own hat and gloves, as it is
quite warm in the a6ernoons. We will supply some tools, but if you have your own you want to bring then please
do. Meet at the front of the school @ 3.15pm as we will be busy in the Bike Rack Garden. Drinks and a sausage
sizzle will occur a6er 5.00pm.
Special thanks to the Year 1 parents who turned up for the July Busy Bee. We had a
small but mighty crowd who cleared all the carpark garden and even did the
triangular gardens that are at the front of the parking bays! The Year 1 students
were amazing all helping right to the very end and then some followed that up with
some new plan!ng the following Friday at the very entrance to the carpark. More
plan!ng will occur over the next few weeks so watch this space! A special
commenda!on to Hunter in Year 1 who was so keen he even stayed a6er school
last Friday to finish off the plan!ng with me and instructed his brother how to do the plan!ng.
Monthly Market
We have had the approval from Mr Locke/ for our monthly market to begin. The first one
will take place on Sunday 20 September, !me TBA. We are hoping it will be a great
a6ernoon for the whole Bateman Community and one of many to come. We are seeking
many secret Master chef’s who are happy to dust off their aprons and provide some
baked goods for the day. Sweet treats such as; cakes, cupcakes, biscuits, slices or even
some savoury delicacies such as; quiches, soups or pies. If you are interested in geOng
involved please contact [email protected] so we can coordinate all of the
produce. Remember this is for the students at Bateman PS and all funds raised will be
plowed back into school projects. We can be reached on the P&C email

Bateman Primary School 50 Year Anniversary Time Capsule
Bateman Primary P&C are excited to announce that fundraising efforts from the Spell-a-thon this year will go
towards the purchase of a handcra6ed !me capsule and plaque to commemorate the school’s 50 year anniversary.
Each class will have the opportunity to contribute to the !me capsule, providing your child with the opportunity to
leave a las!ng legacy at the school.
The !me capsule will be buried and opened in 25 years at the school’s 75 year anniversary celebra!ons… in 2045!
What will the world look like then? This year has been one that many of us will not forget but what a wonderful
way to officially capture some of these memories and the imagina!on of the school community for years to come
in a 50 year anniversary !me capsule.
Grant or Dona(on Sugges(ons
As with many P&Cs and volunteer groups, the COVID situa!on has drama!cally curtailed fundraising efforts this
year. Funds raised by the P&C are invested back into the school to make it a be/er place for the students, parents,
staff and community (for example just this year we donated $9,000 to the school for the fencing surrounding the
Junior School a6er a school request for financial assistance; as well as many other projects).
To that end if you have any ideas, sugges!ons, contacts or informa!on (or you know of anyone who would consider
a dona!on) on poten!al grants for the P&C could you please email them to Mike Baldwin
([email protected] or 0406 666 567) so we can poten!ally apply. We have been very successful in
recent years with geOng grants so any sugges!ons would be greatly appreciated.
Addi!onally, if you have any exper!se in grant applica!ons we would love to hear from you. Many thanks to the
wonderful family (who wished to remain anonymous) for their $500 dona!on towards some tables and gazebos for
the P&C to u!lise at school events
