The Colne Basketball Academy is an exciting venture between the Colne Community School and College and its various partners. Plac-es at the Basketball Academy are open to school leavers who demon-strate the potential and flair for basketball and who are able to com-bine studies as part of the programme.
The Aim The Colne Basketball Academy will provide quality education and training to realise players’ true potential. By combining top class basketball coaching with full-time education and other training opportunities, the Colne Basketball Academy is able to offer a best route for students to progress into the sports industry and Further Education.
Academic Programme Students access full-time studies alongside their basketball coaching. Students have the option of following the BTEC National Diploma in Sport, equivalent to 3 A levels, and/or A levels of their choice. In addition, students can also achieve coaching awards, other National Governing Body qualifications, leadership awards, sports injuries treatment qualifications, as well as opportunities to coach young people in the community.
“This is a great opportunity for players to gain an excellent education combined with regular high quality technical and tactical coaching. This provision allows all members of the Colne Basketball Academy to fulfil their potential” Jon Taylor, Director of Sport
“The Colne Basketball Academy provides an incredible opportunity for gifted and talented basketball players to further their skills. There will be two hours of quality coaching every day to improve all aspects of basketball, fitness and team play alongside academic excellence during the college day. Here at the Colne we will offer basketball opportunities through education to suit everybody. The sky is the limit!” G Ward, C.B.A. Coach
Technical Programme The programme will consist of two hours per day of coaching (and/or match-es) covering all technical and tactical aspects of the game. In addition play-ers will be given guidance on individual fitness programmes including speed, agility, strength and endurance work based on fitness profile sessions at Essex University sports science department. Advice will also be given on diet, nutrition and hygiene together with comprehensive sports injury back up.
“The facilities and resources offered by the Colne Basketball Academy will undoubtedly play a tremendous part in the development and success of these potential athletes” Anthony Alambrides, Coach
Competitive Opportunities It is intended to enter the students into the Essex Colleges League, Suffolk League and Junior National League as well as develop links to clubs. Established links to senior clubs will be further enhanced to give players the opportunities to strive towards standards needed at this lev-el. Representative honours may include County, Re-gional and National squad selection.
Progression From the Basketball programme, students may progress to further education and/or a career in a number of different areas including Coaching, Sports Centre Management, Sports Injuries and Sports Administration. The Colne already has established links with a number of Further and Higher Education providers including Essex University.
