THE CHARLES SCHULTZ PHILOSOPHY
Welcome to 2018 everyone, parents, students and community members. I thought I’d start the
year with one of my favourite philosophies, that of Charles Schultz, the creator of the 'Peanuts'
comic strip.
You don't have to actually answer the questions - just ponder on them.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five winners of the Miss Australia pageant.
3. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
4. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
5. Name the last decade's Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race winners.
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.
These are no second-rate achievers.
They are the best in their fields.
But the applause dies....
Awards tarnish...
Achievements are forgotten...
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special! 5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with. Easier?
The lesson:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the
most money, or the most awards.
They simply are the ones who care the most!
Throughout 2018, look after yourself and the ones around you. Respect the differences in your
classroom and build a healthy learning relationship with your teachers. Make 2018 a great year!

Hello all and welcome back to another year of Duke’s activities. I would like to introduce to you the
team of coordinators for 2018.
Louisa Attard
(Maths) – Silver
Award Coordinator
These are your go-to people should you have any questions about your child’s progress in the
award or the upcoming Adventurous Journeys.
Bronze – An information night will be coming up Thursday the 15th of February, between 5 and
6:30 pm in the common room at school. Here Mr Ilsley will be running through the requirements of
the Award, and some information on the upcoming Adventurous journeys in Term 2 and 4. You are
encouraged to come along and ask any questions you may have about how to support your child in
the successful completion of their Bronze Award.
Silver – Miss Attard will be having a brief meeting with students in Year 10 who are interested in
continuing on with their Silver. It is Critical for students to be in the final stages of their Bronze
Award sign off so they can start to plan their Silver Award. Costing and payment schedules for the
Adventurous Journeys later in the year will be drafted shortly.
Gold- Mr Moylan has begun meeting with the students to finalise numbers for our journey to the
Long Plain region of Kosziusko National Park in week 7 of Term 1. This is a combined expedition
for both our 11’s and 12’s. It is imperative that any year 11’s have completed their Silver award
before commencing this expedition.
Regards Richard Ilsley.

BAND NEWS
Welcome Back to Band!
After a summer vacation, some good things must come to an end - but not Band, which is due to
kick off its 2018 season with rehearsals on Tuesday February 6 at 6.00 pm in the School Hall.
Players of all instruments and abilities are invited to join us for the beginning of what promises to
be a memorable year, supported, as usual, by our end-of-year Tour.
A particular welcome awaits new Year 7s; but anyone contemplating joining Band for the first
time, as well as returning players, will be made most welcome. And don’t think that piano players
have no place in Band - pianists make excellent mallet percussionists in Concert Band and are
needed in both Big Band and Jazz Combos.
So whatever instrument you play, or would like to learn, drop in on Tuesday; and in the meantime
check out our website for all information and news about Band
