BALLOONIES
NATIONAL BALLOON WEEK
19th to 25th MAY 2013
The 17th “National Balloon Week” is taking place from 19th – 26th May 2013. NABAS The Balloon Association Ltd and its members will be championing the balloon and party industry by organising national and local
events that highlight the versatility of applications and market opportunities that balloons can offer.
Competitions, Balloon Releases and Special Events all form part of the week’s festivities, which are being
organised by the Members of the Association around the country.
Balloons really are big business; millions of balloons are sold in the UK every year and the sector as a whole is
thought to be worth in excess of £80 million. The industry also employs a rapidly growing workforce
with the emergence of many new entrepreneurial companies. NABAS – The Balloon Association Ltd, est. 1987, the only independent trade association for the
industry actively encourages and supports this annual promotion.
The events of National Balloon Week are designed to
draw the public’s attention to the vast array of possibilities that balloons offer for entertainment, fun
and business & charitable promotions.
For more details on how you can make the most of National Balloon Week see pages 6 & 7
FROM YOUR COMMITTEE
Dear Member
I am sure most of you had a good year last year what with the regular celebratory occasions plus the Queens Jubilee and both the Olympics and Paralympics.
We now have a highly dedicated Committee who will be working to implement regional training and seminars and an interactive website which will help you all to grow your businesses. Also there will be a surgery held by committee and trainers on a weekly basis.
So for all the members of NABAS, the only independent balloon & party association, the future is starting to look a lot better for all of us.
Please be patient as it won't happen over night, but it will happen, that I promise you.

Business Name: Ballooning Great Owner: Alison May
Location & area covered: Bridgwater, Somerset
What was your career path to where you are today?: I started off doing a NABAS 1 and 2 course. Then in need of some practice I hired my first bottle of helium and did a friends birthday party using all the skills I was taught. This was just a tester to see if I wanted to go further in balloon decorating. I also visited the NABAS show and saw some of the
competition entries, one being a cute Elvis character. I so wanted to learn how to do that ! I did some research and bought a couple of dvd’s and started twisting. I love to mix the twisting aspect in with balloon
decorating to stand out from other balloon decorators and I love what I do.
Name something in the balloon industry that you most like: I most like being able to come up with new ideas. It’s just endless what you can create with
balloons.
Name something in the balloon
industry that you least like: I least like the threat of
helium shortage and price increases which has forced some balloon
decorators to quit. I also hate it when some of the larger chain shops are able to sell helium balloons so cheap and with which
balloon decorators cannot compete.
NABAS MEMBER INTERVIEW: Alison May
Best thing about your job?: Seeing people happy with the things I do and being able to create new things.
What best describes your business?:
Balloon decorator? Balloon and costume retailer? Other? Balloon decorator/twister
How did you decide on your business name?: That was the most difficult thing choosing a name. I just came up with Ballooning Great because I couldn't think of anything else and I hoped to think
people thought it was great.
How do you decide what products to buy in?: I sometimes buy in new products to see what new things I can come up with, but also tend to go along with what the customer wants. I tend to use Qualatex latex, Sempertex link-o-loons and any foils.
What advertising works for you?: I have found the best form of
advertising is word of mouth. Also
Facebook is a very good form of
advertising and it’s also good to have a website.
Do you show at Wedding Fairs?
Other?: At the moment I work during the week and do balloon decorating at weekends. I have only ever done one wedding fair but if this was my sole
income yes I would. I would choose carefully which wedding fairs to do
eg not in a village hall but a proper wedding venue.
Does your business vehicle promote you?: I have a van but it has no sign writing.
Do you have an online
presence?: Yes I have a web-site which shows a range of
different images.
NABAS MEMBER INTERVIEW Cont...: Alison May
How would you like your business to grow in the next few years?:
Uncertain about the future and
unsure if I should take the plunge and try to do this full time or to play it safe and continue to just do this weekend.
How is the ‘credit crunch’ affecting you?: Due to the credit crunch I have had a lot more enquiries
asking for balloon decor during the week. Wedding venues are
offering cheaper rates for weekday weddings.
What tip would you offer someone new to the business?: If you are starting a new business the best thing to do is to try to get your work seen. Always photograph your work to build up a portfolio. Wedding fairs are good as brides tend to spend more money.
How do you
relax after a hard day’s work?: After a hard days work I just like to sit down in front of the tv and relax knowing all has gone well.
Let your imagination

that really could be anyone........

• include a leaflet in with bills you pay - the staff in the
accounts departments as well as the companies are
all possibilities
• local hotels, clubs, meeting places
• local schools, youth centres, library, etc.
• local press, radio and television stations
• the free notice boards in supermarkets and certain retail shops
YOUR LOCAL RADIO
There is a wonderful opportunity for you to build on what NABAS has done and make sure your radio station knows about you, this could give you some excellent coverage if you find a way of interesting them. Prize for competitions is always good news.
YOUR LOCAL PRESS
They are for ever on the look out for interesting topics for their editorial. Go and chat to them, offer them a prize for a competition, or give them some interesting tales about your Balloon experiences, explore possibili-ties with them. They may choose to do a feature on you, if you have got some impressive photos of your decorations or some interesting or unusual angles on work you have undertaken in the past, you could achieve some very welcome free publicity.
YOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS
Contact them to see if they would like to run a competition or event (e.g. best balloon painting, poem, story, etc.) for which you would supply priz-es. Negotiate with your supplier for special prices for these promotional gifts. Every child’s birthday is a potential opportunity for you, raise their awareness. If you achieve this, link it up with your local press - may be they will cover the event.
DISPLAYS
Get permission to place displays where the public will see them, espe-cially where they are waiting and where they would be noticeable for be-ing ‘out of place’. Don’t forget to ensure your card is visible so they can track you down.

NABAS MEMBERS TO THE RESCUE
At the end of November NABAS put a call out to members to assist with the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Christmas Party.
The following came to the rescue and over the next few pages are some images of what they did.; three are NABAS members, one is an entertainer friend of one of the members and the last works at a balloon wholesaler:
Roger Daws www.iglobo.co.uk
Heidi Marie www.Heidals.co.uk
Sylwia Kosla www.topballoon.co.uk
Danny Schlesinger www.circoridiculoso.com
Tracy Wilkinson air8
The remit they were given was as follows: “Currently we are looking for some assistance in decorating the space with balloons (these must be
latex free because of the children). The theme for the parties this year is the Gingerbread man so something along this line of theme would be
fantastic”.
Two thousand patients and families had a rocking time with reindeers at this year’s Christmas party. The event, which ran over two days, was enjoyed by patients and families who are being, or have been, treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital in the last year.
Celebrities who helped everybody get in the
party mood included Oliver and James Phelps
(the Weaslies), Twist and Pulse (from Britain’s
Got Talent), Tess Daly, Radio 1 DJs, Stavros
Flatley, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, Anna
Popplewell, Freema Agyeman and Pixie Lott.
During the parties the children made Christmas
crafts, decorated cookies and met Father
Christmas and people dressed up as super-
heroes, fairies, elves and princesses. They
each received an amazing goody bag of toys.
The party, planned by Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, is the best Christmas present for those patients who have to miss their own celebrations because they are in hospital during the festive season and also an enjoyable day out for other patients treated at the hospital within the last year.
"Two thousand patients and their families have enjoyed this year’s Christmas party. And for those who are still in hospital or face being in over Christmas it has been an extra special boost. "Watching the celebrities and characters bring joy to the children has been amazing. We are extremely grateful to all the celebrities, generous companies and volunteers who have played such an important role in bringing smiles to the faces of our patients and their families." Tim Johnson, Executive Director of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity
A HOBBIT HOUSE MADE COMPLETELY
FROM BALLOONS
Thanks to the Internet, fandom and geek culture are no longer taboo. In fact, creating an ode to one's obsession, whether a sports team or a comic book hero, and sending it out into the social media world, can make a person an instant celebrity of sorts.
That's exactly what has happened to Jeremy Telford, a balloon artist from Utah, USA. Jeremy is a superfan of the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, and he used 2,600 balloons to re-create Bag End, the home of Hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
Balloon Bag End features a fireplace with balloon flames, roof beams, a chandelier, a fruit centerpiece, a pantry with working doors, and much more. It took Jeremy three 10 to 15 hour-long days to complete the project.
Jeremy is no stranger to the ambitious concept. He has created life-size replicas of a stegosaurus, a complete T. rex skeleton, and a motorcycle. This is just the latest high mark in his career. He performed his act at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, won an award at a 2009 international competition of balloon artists in Las Vegas, and has written a book "Balloonology".
