BALLAST TANKS MAINTENANCE VOYAGE UPGRADE
Initial inspection of WBT is carried out by Paint Inspector,
Owner’s Superintendent and our Representatives to
estimate scope of works, percentage of paint
damaged by corrosion, equipment to be used,
quantity of paint required, etc.
Mostly we are invited when condition of tanks becomes
qualified as “POOR”; as it creates additional problems in
regards to annual re-inspection by Class, UT
measurements and all other avoidable expenses.
Usually mechanical pneumatic tools are applied, in
combination with sand-blasting or water blasting
equipment, to achieve required condition of steel
surface before paint application.
FPT tank of reefer vessel
(inspection at dry-dock)
Depending on volume of works, requirements of paint
supplier, application technology, etc. coating is
carried out by air-less spraying, brushes or rollers to
achieve required DFT.
Inspection of DB
ballast tanks
Hand tools only (pneumatic hammers, chisels, needle
guns, etc.) are used for spot de-rusting.
TS ballast tank of bulk carrier
(initial inspection)
Coating is performed by means of hand tools only
(brushes/rollers) instead of spraying machines, in case
spot treatment is required.
That is how excessive overpainting is avoided and
loss/wasting of paint is prevented.
Appropriate safety clothing is provided to workers for
sand-blasting works.
Separate air-supply is being arranged.
Proper humidity level, strictly in accordance with paint
application requirements, is kept inside the tanks while
priming / coating to ensure efficient adherence and
avoid exfoliation. Therefore, sufficient ventilation is very
important and provided either by Owners or ourselves.
Final results are submitted to attending
Superintendent / Ship’s administration.
Thickness of coating and quality of application
are verified.
