Sample Essays on the topic “Smiles” from JPNT SPM Trial Exam 2012
Sample 1A: Simple Version
My father is a big football fan. In his young days he was the captain of his
school football team. Even the mention of the word football will make him smile. He
never loses the opportunity to see enjoyable football matches.
Last Sunday my father took me to see a football match. It was held at the
National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. We reached the new stadium early. My father parked
the car and bought two tickets and then we entered the stadium.
The match was between Harimau Malaya and the famous Arsenal football
club. The stadium was full of football fans. They were really eager to watch the
match. We could see many dedicated supporters wearing red and yellow shirts in the
stadium.
All players looked very smart in their jerseys. Soon the match began. It was
an interesting match. Harimau Malaya scored their goal in the 45th minute. Then it
was the first half break.
The match began again after the break. The experienced Arsenal team played
fast and scored a goal in the 87th minute. In the 90th minute Arsenal scored another
surprising goal. Their shooting and team-work were excellent.
In the second half Arsenal showed their best. Harimau Malaya tried hard but
could not match them. It became a one-sided game. They proved to be better.
Arsenal won the match by 2 goals to 1.
It was a fun experience. We could see cheers and smiles everywhere in the
stadium. My father was the happiest. I knew it from his smile. I would never forget
this wonderful event.

Questions 26-31 are based on the following passage.
The following passage is about a woman who regains her sight after suffering from severe
atopic keratoconjunctivitis.

Tracey Foster had always had itchy eyes. From the age of 11, she had
suffered from severe atopic keratoconjunctivitis, an allergic condition affecting
the cornea.Tracey’s eyes were badly inflamed, constantly sticky and watering.
Steroids and antihistamines brought little relief. The condition worsened in
summer and spring when her eyes would become unbearably itchy. There was
nothing she could do except rub her eyes, day and night, sometimes for minutes at a
time.
But Tracey lived with it, growing up into an attractive young woman who
married and had a daughter. However, there was a darker side to her allergy: it was
affecting her sight. In 1994, doctors at Bristol Eye Hospital explained that the years
of rubbing had brought on keratoconus, a condition that causes the cornea –
responsible for two-thirds of the eye’s focusing power – to become misshapen.
Family was the centre of Tracey’s world and on to her delight, hers grew.
Her second daughter was born two years later, then a son in 2000. Life should have
been perfect for her: instead it was frightening. At the age of 28, Tracey was
almost blind.
Even through thick glasses, her new son was just a blur. Tracey gazed at the
world, a world now rarely extending beyond her home in the Patchway area of
Bristol. Having to feel her way round the house, Tracey knew every inch: the 13
stairs, the position of the light switches, and right down to the tiny buttons on the
TV remote control. The worst of it was not being able to make out the faces of her
children when they all sat down to eat. She had no idea if they were happy or sad.
She relied on her husband John or the two elder children to guide her when
she went out. No longer able to see in 3D – kerbs looked flat and the edges of steps
were indistinct - she was petrified of falling over. Her children had to wear bright
colours so that she could pick them out in a crowd. As young as they were, her
daughters became her eyes. “Mum, there’s someone over there waving at you,”
one of them would hiss. “Just wave back.”
In 2000, Derek Tole joined Bristol Eye Hospital as a consultant. By the time
Tracey first met him in April 2001, her confidence was at rock bottom. She felt she
was a burden to her family. Tole was touched. A father himself and in his first
consultant’s job, he badly wanted to make a difference to Tracey’s life. Cautiously,
he asked, “How do you feel about a corneal transplant?”
But Tole was anxious. Even on the morning of the transplant on Tracey’s
eyes, January 14, 2002, he asked whether she was sure she wanted to go through

Tracey Foster had always had itchy eyes. From the age of 11, she had suffered

Steroids and antihistamines brought little relief. The condition worsened in summer

Shangri-La is a place surrounded by snow-capped mountains where people live
peacefully to over a hundred years. The air here is supposed to be pure with flowers
everywhere. This was not so in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The town was dusty with
outdated motor vehicles spewing white smoke from inefficient engines. I was there on my
way to the base camp of Annapurna, a mountain in Nepal. The next day, I proceeded to Pokara, the starting point of the trek. The start of the
journey was behind some shacks at the side of a shallow ravine where some Tibetan ladies
were selling trinkets to tourists. Once the trekking started it was like a dream come true.
The air was very pure because there were no motor vehicles of any kind except helicopters
which flew overhead. We crossed suspension bridges like the ones in Indiana Jones movies. The trek was
uphill all the time with little respite. Now and then we came to broad flat ledges but after
that it was climbing up and up again. I took my time and admired the snow-capped
mountains and the rustic villages I passed through. All the time I was conscious of the fresh
air I was breathing in. It was invigorating, mostly because it had always been my dream to
trek the foothills of the Himalayas. I had chosen the right season – the rains had stopped and the rhododendrons which
grew in bushes and trees were in full bloom. Walking through a forest of rhododendrons
was more like the Shangri-La I had dreamed of. Moss hung from the branches of these
century-old trees. As I sat down to appreciate the vista which spread before me, I heard the
porter whistling as he carried my heavy bag past me. Nights were spent in little huts along the trek. It was cold and bathing was a
problem except in rest lodges which had hot water. They used solar power and since the sun
was hardly out when I was there, hot water was in short supply. Food was interesting. It
was mainly western food – apple pies and pizzas were common. At Chomron, I had to wake up at 4 am and walk up Poon Hill in the dark. I arrived
at the summit just as the sun was rising. If there had been music, it would have been my
idea of heaven – clean clear air, cold breeze and the changing colours of the mountain
ranges which surrounded the summit. The panoramic view was astounding as the sun rose
and showed clearly each peak with each passing minute. There were almost a hundred
trekkers there but their conversation was quiet. Somehow sound did not carry well in the
chilly rarefied air. All too soon the sun became too hot and I had to descent. I rested in Chomron for
another night. When I made my final walk to the base camp of Annapurna, I met some
trekkers who had to stay the night at the lodge. Some were suffering from mountain
sickness. Snow began to fall as I crossed small glaciers where a slip meant sliding down the
valley down below. The base camp loomed through the falling snow one kilometre in front. The climb
was steep. It took more than one hour to reach it. What a feeling of success I had when I
took the final step into the lodge of the base camp. Adapted from Just English , issue 6 2005
