Health News You and Your Family Can Use

By Vanessa Orr

One of the most frustrating thingsabout having prolonged or evenchronic respiratory problems is that

it’s often very difficult to find out what’scausing your symptoms and preventing youfrom getting better. A lot of people stayindoors, fearing that allergies or some kindof environmental factors are making themsick—when what they really should fear isinside their homes.

Sick Building Syndrome, or SBS, can causesymptoms ranging from headaches, dizziness and nausea, to ear, nose and throatirritation, dry or itchy skin, asthma, breathing and respiratory problems and evenequilibrium issues. These conditions may be the result

of mold and mold spores inthe home that can develop

in every room of thehouse as a result of

leaky window seals, inadequate chimneyventilation, moldspores in the HVAC

system, delaminatedkitchen countertops,

older bathroom fixturesand more.Surprisingly, even new

construction can suffer from SBS, as the materials usedto put the homes together might have sat uncovered

outside for months, developing moldthat remains bio-active long after

the roof hasbeen put on.

“People think that bleachwill kill live organisms like C.Diff, MRSA, salmonella orinfluenza, but it doesn’t doanything if you just spray it ona surface and wipe it up; thesurface needs to remain wet for

12 minutes or more, which canbe dangerous to children andpets,” explained Joseph P.

Kleynjans, president and CEO ofBactronix Corp. “Viruses and molds havegotten much stronger over the past 100years, and have developed immunities tothese toxic chemicals.”

So how do you fight these ‘superbugs’ in thehome—or for that fact, in schools, hospitals, assistedliving facilities or any other private or public space? After spending years studying the problem, researchers for Bactronix Corp. came up with a non-toxic, long-lasting, scientifically developedantimicrobial solution whose success is backed byempirical evidence.

BactroKill™The company’s BactroKill™ is formulated to

destroy dangerous biofilm that microbes make toprotect themselves from poison-based disinfectants.

“There are a lot of companies out there using apoisoning process to fight contamination, and wevery quickly realized that we didn’t want to go inthat direction,” explained Bactronix Corp. VicePresident A.J. Powell. “Instead, we usednanotechnology to develop a liquid formula thatuses chlorine dioxide gas that only becomes activewhen it comes in contact with a live organism. Thistype of technology had never been done before, and

the controlled delivery system—creating a physical instead of achemical kill—makes it highly effective and safe.”

The nontoxic disinfectant and odor eliminator kills more than 140different bacteria and viruses. BactroKill™ also eliminates bad odorsfrom smoke, urine, vomit, bodily fluids, ammonia and other sources, making it perfect for use in hospitals and nursing home settings, aswell as anywhere children, the elderly and individuals with healthissues congregate.

“We’ve gone into homes, offices and medical facilities, and come out with readings of

5,000 or 6,000—that’s 50 to 60times what is considered safe.”

BactroBlock™Realizing that surfaces needed to not

only be made clean, but kept clean,Bactronix took the process a stepfurther by formulating a product thatwould provide residual antimicrobialvalue, based on similar technologiesused in the textile industry.BactroBlock™ permanently bonds totreated surfaces, inhibiting thegrowth of mold, mildew, algae andbacteria and providing residualprotection to prevent recontamin-ation.

“Depending on the level ofcontamination that exists, ourproducts can provide residual value from between a month anda year,” explained Bactronix Corp. Vice President Vincent J.Valicenti.

While homeowners can take advantage of this technology inspray bottle form, larger institutions need a more efficient wayto distribute the products, so Bactronix created an electrostaticspraying process that provides 100 percent coverage on allsurfaces, coating difficult and hard-to-reach areas. Thecompany even custom-designed battery-operated sprayers towork where power and accessibility are limited, such as oncommercial aircrafts.

The ProofOf course, when you’re fighting an invisible enemy, it’s hard

to know whether you’ve won the battle. “How do youdetermine when you’re in a sick room; whether you’re dealing

with a contaminated surface or not?”asked Kleynjans. “What you cannotmeasure, you cannot manage.”

To this end, Bactronix researcherslooked to USDA-approved testingmethods, and adapted ATP (adenosinetri-phosphate) testing that allows themto swab an area, place the swab in aBactroMeter, and get a reading of thebio-level that is present. A writtenreport, called a Bionomic AssessmentReport (BAR) is then provided to theclient to determine the type and extentof treatment needed.

“If the level is under 100, it isconsidered safe,” said Kleynjans. “If it is

in excess of 100, it is contaminated. We’ve gone into homes, offices and medical facilities, and come out with readings of5,000 or 6,000—that’s 50 to 60 times what is considered safe.”

“This is not hocus pocus—it’s science. We look at homes andfacilities from an unbiased perspective, create a report, andtreat the site if necessary,” said Powell, adding that not allfacilities require treatment.

As for where the products should be used, Valicenti believesthe answer is obvious. “There isn’t a place where they shouldn’tbe used,” he explained. “Our products are safe, nontoxic andhelp to protect your environment—when we finish and walkout, you can walk right in.”
