ORGANELLES
Bacteria Attacks!!
CILIA/FLAGELLA
CILIA AND FLAGELLA FUNCTION? To move the cell around (flagella) Or move things around the cell (cilia)
CELL WALL
CELL WALL FUNCTION? To give the cell structure and to protect it
CELL MEMBRANE
FUNCTION? To control what goes in and out of the cell
LYSOSOME
FUNCTION? To digest things the cell doesn’t
want/need Old cell “parts” (organelles, etc) Intruding bacteria/viruses
Lysosomes are cellular organelles that contain acid hydrolase enzymes that break down waste materials and cellular debris. They can be described as the stomach of the cell. Lysosomes digest excess or worn-out organelles, food particles, and engulfed viruses or bacteria.
MITOCHONDRIA
FUNCTION? To give the cell ENERGY!
Takes food and turns it into a useable form of energy
RIBOSOME
FUNCTION? To make proteins…
NOT for ENERGY!!! Proteins have functions in your body…you
only use proteins you EAT for energy…NOT ones your cells make for you!
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (ER)
FUNCTION? To modify and package materials
NUCLEUS
FUNCTION? Houses the DNA (protects it)
DNA
FUNCTION? To tell the cell how to make proteins
correctly
CHLOROPLAST
FUNCTION? Performs photosynthesis to turn sunlight
into glucose (The mitochondria then turns that glucose into
ATP – an energy source the cell can use)
VACUOLE
FUNCTION? To store things
Water, wastes, foods
GOLGI BODY
FUNCTION? To package things for export out of the
cell When a golgi vesicle is filled with digestive
enzymes, it can make a LYSOSOME!
CYTOPLASM
FUNCTION? The jelly-like material all the organelles
reside in…to give the cell support Contains all the macromolecules the cell
needs
