The Hong Kong Polytechnic UniversityThe origin of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) can be traced back to 1937 with

the founding of the first publicly-funded post-secondary technical institution in Hong Kong –

the Government Trade School. The School was renamed the Hong Kong Technical College in

1947. In August 1972, the Hong Kong Polytechnic was formally established, taking over the

campus and staff of the Hong Kong Technical College. The institution assumed full university

status in November 1994. PolyU is a government-funded institution in Hong Kong providing

high quality education of an applied nature that meets the changing requirements of the

community, and preparing students for challenges in their future career.

School of Professional Education and Executive DevelopmentOfficially formed by PolyU in 1999, PolyU SPEED has been actively developing and delivering a

wide range of professionally-oriented programmes that are relevant to individual

advancement and wider socio-economic needs. In pursuing its vision to becoming a leading

self-financing tertiary education institution in Hong Kong, PolyU SPEED provides sub-degree

graduates with quality articulation degree programmes relevant to their career and

professional aspirations.

The programmes described in this brochure are offered by the School of Professional

Education and Executive Development (SPEED) in collaboration with Northumbria University,

Newcastle in the UK. Since January 2003, these programmes have nurtured around 5,100

graduates in Hong Kong, and the January 2020 cohort will be the 35th intake since the

collaboration. The curricula, syllabuses and assessments are identical or comparable to those

delivered on campus in Newcastle. Students will be awarded the degrees by Northumbria

University upon successful completion of study.

Entry Requirements

For admission to the programmes, applicants should:

• possess a Higher Diploma or an Associate Degree or an equivalent qualification in a business-related discipline, or BTEC Higher National Diploma in Business, AND

• achieve a score of 575 in TOEFL or 6.5 in IELTS, or equivalent in other tests of English (e.g. HKALE, HKCEE or HKDSE).

Holders of other qualification(s) with substantial relevant work experience may also apply. Such applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

ScholarshipsScholarship opportunities are available for students

with outstanding academic results and merits.

English Language and Cultural Learning ProgrammeStudents admitted to the NU programmes can apply,

on a competitive basis, to attend the English

Language and Cultural Learning Programme at

Northumbria University and experience the life and

culture in the UK in the Summer Term. Successful

candidates will be required to contribute part of the

costs involved.

Teaching and Learning SupportModules are conducted through lectures and seminars. Apart from face-to-face teaching,

students will also have access to web-based materials. Study Support activities such as

orientation, library induction and research workshop will be run to facilitate academic

support and provide students with a framework for independent learning.

Class Schedule and Teaching Venue Part-time classes are conducted on weekday evenings and / or Saturday afternoons /

evenings on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus or PolyU West Kowloon Campus.

Library FacilitiesLibrary facilities are available to students.

Financial Assistance• Extended Non-means-tested Loan Students on the programmes are eligible to apply for the Extended Non-means-tested

Loan Scheme (ENLS) offered by the Student Finance Office (SFO). Further information

Aims and ObjectivesThis is a broad-based programme, which prepares

students for an enhanced role in general

management or administration within the public

and private sectors. The programme explores and

develops the functional areas of business, including

management, marketing and strategy.

Teaching and AssessmentA variety of teaching methods will be adopted

including case studies, business simulations,

lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops.

Students will be assessed by assignments. Some

modules may also have a written examination.

thorough grounding in the field of human resources

management. It will equip students with the

relevant skills, knowledge and understanding that

are required in this challenging, yet highly

rewarding field. Students will also have the chance

to develop reflective practices and critical thinking

skills. These attributes are essential for a manager to

handle changes in this modern society.

Module Description

HR9615 Compensation: Con�ict and

Cooperation (20 credits)

This module will enable students to learn a critical and

practical approach towards the management of

employee rewards and the employment relationship. By

the end of the module students will have designed a

comprehensive reward system and negotiated its

implementation in the face of opposition. Students will

learn how to bargain and compromise, recognising the

strategic role of employee rewards and how important

they are in the employment relationship. This will lead

students to understand that organisations and their

employees will often seek different rewards, sometimes

resulting in conflict. Students will be introduced to a

wide range of reward practices, both traditional and

modern, understanding how each of these may have

very different meanings for each side of the

employment relationship. They will learn the principles

and skills of negotiation and compromise, finding their

way to agreement through a complex mix of

cooperation, consensus, power play and shrewd

bargaining.

HR9611 HR Resourcing and Development

(20 credits)

The module aims to provide students with the critical

knowledge and understanding of the key strategic

Human Resource Management (HRM)/ Human Resource

Development (HRD) aspects required in the modern

workplace. It also aims to provide students with a strong

awareness relating to how strategic HRM/HRD

contributes to the interests of stakeholders and adds

value to the business. There are 12 core topics, including

Strategic HRM, HR Planning, Diversity at Work and

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Induction and

Performance Management, Managing Absence and

Promoting Wellbeing, Challenges for Practitioners,

Strategic HRD and Promoting a Learning Culture,

Organisational Development (OD) and Change

Management, Training and Development, and Evaluation

of HRD. Students will gain opportunities to reflect upon

their own HRM/HRD experience allowing them to

integrate it into their ongoing learning activities.

HR9610 Critical Organisational Analysis

(20 credits)

This module is designed to encourage engagement with

organisation theory by challenging conventional

understanding of existing ideas, perspectives and

practices through the exploration of recent trends and

their subsequent impact upon the organisation. Students

will learn analytical skills that enable them to critique

existing practices, people and behaviours within typical

organisational structures. Students will apply those skills

to recognise the power and control relationships within

the organisation and the related environment through

exploring and theorising different cultural influences.

They will gain an understanding of major perspectives on

critical organisation theory, recent trends and practices

within organisations including multi-cultural and ethical

awareness. This will enable students to form their own

construction of knowledge on organisations and how to

manage people and behaviours within them.

MK9616 Contemporary Marketing Strategy (20 credits)

This module will extend students’ knowledge and

understanding of marketing acquired from their previous

studies into the marketing strategy area (approach and

application). Students will learn to apply the principles

and techniques of marketing strategy across a wide range

of goods and services in different markets. They will learn

to use models which help marketing managers to make

more informed decisions (e.g. new product development,

brand repositioning, deletion, sales force management

and communication techniques). Students will undertake

analysis of complex situations via the use of case studies

and learn how to present solutions through group

discussions. The ability to think strategically will be

expressed in the production of marketing plans. Students

will cover the design and implementation of marketing

strategies and have an awareness of emerging areas in a

contemporary landscape.

MO9622 Strategic Supply Chain Management (20 credits)

This module aims to provide students with the

knowledge and skills of applying a variety of Strategic

Supply Chain Management (SSCM) knowledge at the

subject interface to support business decision making.

There are 12 main topics that include Logistics Planning

Systems, Customer Service, Relationship Management,

Benchmarking, Just-In-Time and Quick Response

Logistics, Inventory Management, Agile Supply Chain,

Lean Thinking, e-Supply Chain, Reverse Logistics, Quality

SCM and Lean Six Sigma. The module will lead students to

the development of SSCM skills and confidence in

handling the knowledge gained, exposing them to a wide

range of subject techniques within the area.

MO9623 Supply Networks (20 credits)

The module aims to provide students with the

knowledge and skills of applying a variety of Supply

Networks knowledge at the subject interface to support

business decision making. There are a number of main

topic areas covered that include Supply Network Design,

Planning and Control, Intermodal Transportation,

Warehouse Planning, Control and Design Management,

Inventory Control Systems, Network Management,

Operation Perspectives, Network Architecture, and Lean

Thinking via Process Improvement. The module will lead

students to the development of Supply Network (SN)

skills and confidence exposing them to a wide range of

techniques.

MO9624 Supply Chain Innovation (20 credits)

The module aims to help students with using knowledge

of business and management to understand the

management of innovations in supply chains. There are 5

main topics that comprise Types of Innovations,

Innovation Processes, Knowledge Management for

Innovation, Relating in Business Networks for Managing

Innovations, and an Introduction to Selected Process and

Organisational Innovations in Supply Chain. The module

will lead students to the development of an

understanding of the different facets associated with

supply chain innovation, exposing them to a wide range

of theories and frameworks. They will become aware of

the role the management of supply chain innovations

plays in the wider business context together with an

understanding of the role of knowledge management,

the drivers for these innovations, the ways in which such

innovations can be managed and different aspects

associated with the relational nature of managing supply

chain innovations.

HR0388 Academic and Career Development (20 credits)

This module is designed to equip students with the

necessary knowledge and transferable skills for their

future employability and career development. Students

will also receive support in extending their academic

skills so that they can take a critical approach to this

module and their wider studies.

This module begins by supporting students to

understand and demonstrate advanced academic study

skills. This will enable them to take a more critical, deeper

and more research-informed approach to their studies.

Students will develop valuable knowledge and skills of

the global graduate labour market drawing upon

national and international exemplars, whilst exploring

key aspects of their skills, knowledge, personality, values,

abilities and interests to make a well-informed career

choice and develop a career plan.

The module is taught by combined lectures / seminars /

workshops due to the interactive nature of the module.

Detailed directed reading, diagnostics and interactive

exercises will be undertaken which are contextualised to

the country of study and intended employment.

NX0328 Contemporary Issues in Business

(20 credits)

To support individual investigation into an applied

business problem or issue, each student will develop a

topic based on existing research with the support of a

specialist workshop tutor. This individual investigation

will draw on relevant academic theories, concepts and

frameworks and will result in a critical synthesis of

business practice and academic theory.

This module is taught through a series of workshops and

lectures. This workshop programme is supported by

directed reading and advice specific to the investigation

of the student’s specific business issue / problem and the

development of their professional awareness and

competence.

SM0382 Strategic Management and

Corporate Responsibility (20 credits)

The overall aim of this module is to teach students how

organisations can compete successfully in economic

terms while managing their social and environmental

responsibility. At the end of the module students will be

able to critically evaluate the factors which underpin an

organisation’s success (or otherwise) in managing the

triple bottom line and will have learned how to use

appropriate frameworks to analyse research material and

draw useful conclusions.

The module is taught by lectures, seminars and directed

reading.
