    T he M ayor said he though t i t would be well th a t the to ivn should be m ade acquain ted w ith th e s ta te of the food supplies. T hey were now practically in th e h an d of th e Food Control Com m ittee, and, in the thrpi weeks th a t intervened before rations came in to foi th a t Com m ittee would do a ll in th e ir power to m ake dn equal d istribu tion of foodstuffs. lu order to do theft, m eat had been divided in to tw o classes. According reports from reliable sources, they could no t ,expeot| receive more th an one-third of a lb. per head per wi of beef or m utton. T hey could, however, m ake up rem ainder of 1-lb. pe r head per week by o b tar tinned m eats, [bacon, ham, tongue, poultry , gamef or m ea t pies. T here seemed to be an idea th a t th e allowance was to ba , one-third of a lb. per head per weak of a ll ineat, b u t ! th a t ryas n o t so. T hey would, he was

    -sure, wish th a t, as fa r as possible, th e hospitals sbould bo supplied and also th a t th e youngsters should be don- sidered. H e would rem ind people who ha< th a t they d id ho t need so much m eat as th e young folk. I t had been m ost definitely pointed; ou t to thos< who

They would also gee th a t no profiteering took place, and if th e distribution was no t done properly by th e tradespeople they Iwould pay a tten tion to th a t. Councillor Breach asked if all children had a preference over civilians, or was i t only those in b o n d in gschools? '

    T he M ayor said i t was more difficult to deal w ith families of children th in w ith schools of 80 or 90 oh ldren,

    A lderm an S im m o n s strongly objected to th e recom m endation to pay £2,870 for th e freehold of th e M unicipal G irls’ Secondary School. to purchase th e freehold on such term s.Councillor A vard , while agreeing th a t th e price

    was enorm ous, had hopes th a t fu rth e r negotiations would resu lt in a reduction. H e strongly favoured th e acquisition of freeholds w herever possible.

    Councillor H o l l in s said there had been an e rro r in procedure! T h e proposal should go before the F inance Com m ittee and then , if n o t approved, sent back to th e E ducation Com m ittee. A s to th e tru e value of th e p roperty i t was difficult to m ake a definite pronouncem ent. A ll th e considerations were duly debated by th e Com m ittee, who would like, of course, to lower th e price, b u t w ere powerless to do this. 'i- <

    A lderm an S im m o n s , accepted a suggestion from tho D eputy M ayor th a t th e m atte r should be referred to the F inance Com m ittee, leaving the. Council free to discuss i t a t a la te r date. On. th is understand ing th e am en d m en t w as w ithdraw n. 1

    FOOD CONTROL.Since issuing their tem porary m eat order on M onday,

    th e Food Control Com mittee have received a deputation of th e butchers, and have given careful consideration to poin ts raised a t th e interview . I t has been decided th a t edible offal and sausages are no t included in the ra tion (J-lb. of beef or m utton and §-lb. 6f poultry, game, hares, rabbits, tinned meat, m eat pies, &c.). A fu rth er decision is th a t 24-lba. of poultry, game and

    i hares shall count as 1-lb. o f meat.T his week there has been an increased supply of meat,

    and the butohers have been enabled to d istribute mbre than th e ra tion allowance. A s m entioned by the M ayor a t M onday’s Town Council meeting, the committee are determ ined to do th e ir best, pending th e coming in to effect of th e general order for London and the Hom e Counties on February 25th, to m ake an equal distribution in th e m atters of meat, m argarine and jbuttor.

    U n d er th e plan now developing, and to be enforced as from the 25th inst., the Food M inistry has practically decided th a t m eat rationing will be on a cash basis— probably l a 4d. worth per adu lt per week. Children undey ten will get a half-ration. All butchers’ m eat (beef, m utton and pork) will be sold boned. The bones will go to national kitchens for soup-making. A fterwards th e glycerine and fa ts w ill be extracted for m unitions and the bones then crushed for fertilisera Poultry , which cannot be boned, will be sold in joints. Possibly 8-ozs. of poultry will rank as 2-oza of butchers’ m eat. j- W hatever money valne ra tion be fixed upon i t will mean lim iting tbe individual to th a t expenditure in a week on all forms of m eat—butchers’ meat, poultry, game, rabbits, sausages, bacon and cooked or tinned m eata I t means roughly one pound of meat. The individual will have to m ake his choice. W here there is a family variety will be possible. Some coupons can be spen t w ith the butohefs; others on bacon, sausages o r poultry . }

    To-day is j th e last day for receiving a t the Food Control Office, Town H all, application forms for food card a B y nex t W ednesday householders should receive from th e Food Com m ittee,T ,"a food card ; 2, a m eat card for each] person included in th e application. By th e food card four foods can be rationed. To begin w ith, only m hrgarine or b u tte r is rationed, and so far as th is card is concerned th e section dealing w ith this food is all one need trouble about.

    A fter w riting your name and address on your card, take i t to thel grocer who is to supply your b u tte r or m argarine. H e will formally register you by filling up th e necessary portion of th e card.
