“Automated assessment of hand hygiene compliance in healthcare settings using
Kinect Camera”
Renu Saini*, Deepak Agrawal*, K.K. Biswas**Neurosurgery*, JPNATC, AllMS, New Delhi, Computer science & Engineering** IIT, Delhi
Introduction• Hospital-acquired infections most commonly transmitted
via Health care worker’s hands
• Hand washing reduces the infection rate in hospital during the patient care
3
Improving Hand Hygiene Practice Why?
4
Work health care system to make a safer place
5
Hand hygiene
Hand hygiene is a term that applies to the process of hand washing or hand decontamination.
6

9
Challenge Of Accountability
10
Key Question
• Is Health care worker actually doing proper hand washing in the complex environment (ICU & Medical Ward) before and after touching the patients ?
11
IT & HEALTH CAREInformation technology (IT) has the potential to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care.
12
Technology for Monitoring and Compliance
13
Rational
Automated technology need to be developed:• Cost effective solution• Eliminates manual compliance monitoring• Avoids disruption to patient care workflows• Accountability to all the healthcare worker level
14
AIM
To create an automatic monitoring system for the
health care professional’s “hand washing activity”
in the complex environment (ICU & Medical ward)
15
Study Design: Prospective
Subject: Doctors & Nurse
Setting: Neurosurgery intensive care unit (NICU) at JPNATC, AIIMS.
16
Kinect Camera
Configuration: • 640 X 480 pixels • can track the user’s arm, leg and finger movements

21
Data Modeling
• 30 frames for individual to create feature vector and 3-D coordinates in each frame.
• Feature was extracted from the model such as rotation, position and size invariant and gave a relative position of skeleton points.
• Transformation matrix was calculated with rotation & scaling.
• This model was use to predict the action for health care worker in the term of hand washing.
22
Results• Successful recognition of hand washing was seen at the
individual level. • This model gave possible number of times a particular
healthcare professional hand washed in a specific time period
• Automatic logging of this activity can result in accurate statistics on the prevalence of hand washing and ensure compliance by healthcare professionals in hospitals.
23
Conclusion
Automated monitoring and real-time feedback helps to improve hand hygiene performance of health care professionals.
