WOMEN VETERANS LUNCHEON The 7th annual District 11 Women Veterans Luncheon
will be at Fred Hancock Post 19 in Renton on Saturday,
March 8th. The luncheon begins with a social at 11AM
followed by lunch at 12noon. All ladies that served in the
military are invited to attend the luncheon. Please make
your reservations with Donna Blaurock @ 206-466-2882.
Reservations are a must!
The guest speaker for the event is CAPT Laura Dickey,
Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Cutter Midgett. The
Midgett is a high endurance cutter used in drug interdiction
in the eastern Pacific Ocean off Central and South America
and fisheries enforcement off Alaska in the Bering Sea.
MEMBERSHIP Post membership currently stands at 90% of goal which
in other words means we are 30 short of attaining goal. We
encourage our members to check their cards. If your card
has a 2013 at the top, you are probably delinquent and need
to send in the $40 to bring your membership up to date.
Another question frequently asked is about the $1000 life
insurance policy which is part of your membership. This is
an accidental death type policy and will not cover death by
natural causes. Your membership must be current to main-
tain insurance coverage and receive the Department news-
paper “Washington Legionnaire”.
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER It is with sadness I report the transfer of comrade Vernon
Tipton to the roster of “Post Everlasting.” Vernon was a 50
year member and we extend our condolences to his family.
Tom Valencour, our Finance Officer, was in the hospital
recently due to a heart attack. He is currently home after a
three day stay at the Auburn Medical Center. Please keep
these families in your prayers! Roger Olsen, Chaplain
Officers in position to begin the Flag disposal ceremony at Memorial.
FLAG DISPOSAL CEREMONY The next Flag Disposal ceremony is scheduled for Satur-
day, March 15th at 11AM. The Post has an ample supply
of worn Flags for disposal on that day-weather permitting.
If anyone asks where can they drop off worn Flags, the
Post has a blue drop box outside Auburn City Hall at the
Main Street entrance.
MUCKLESHOOT BREAKFAST The next quarterly Muckleshoot Veterans Breakfast will
be on Saturday, March 15th at 9AM at the Muckleshoot
Casino. Come on out for a delicious free breakfast buffet
and be part of your Auburn veterans community.
MID-WINTER CONFERENCE The Department of Washington Mid-Winter Conference
was held at the Red Lion at the Park Hotel in Spokane.
The Mid-Winter was the site of the 2014 Constitutional
Speech Contest finals with four excellent candidates com-
peting for a total of $5,000 in scholarships. Cady Crosby
of Burlington was first place in the finals.
In the Mid-Winter executive session, a plan to replace the
Department Commander’s vehicle was deferred to the De-
partment Convention for action. The current vehicle is a
2008 Ford Taurus X with 175,000 miles.
AUXILIARY UNIT 78 NOTES Spring is just around the corner! It’s that time of year to
start making plans for our annual Poppy Distribution dur-
ing Memorial weekend and the Coffee Stop at the Federal
Way Rest Area the last week of June. Please try to offer to
work one shift. This is how our Unit raises money to help
fund programs for veterans.
At the March meeting will be a discussion on updating
our current By-Laws. Hope to see you at the next meeting
on March 10, 2014 at 10AM. Sharon Schooley, President

Chapter 78 Riders Donate Chapter 78 members voted to put their money where their mouth is by not only supporting Legion sponsored activities but also making dona-tions. The members donated $100 to the Women’s Veterans Luncheon happening on March 8th at Renton Post 19. The second donation was for $275 to sponsor a Boy’s State candidate. *********************************************************************************
Members of Chapter 78 rolled their cold motorcycles out of their ga-rages, bundled up in their winter gear and participated in the Renton ABATE Polar Bear run on January 1, 2014. ********************************************************************************* The weather was not as cooperative for the 16th Annual Teddy Bear Run as it was for the Polar Bear Run. The night before the event Mother Nature decided to participate by dropping some white fluffy stuff, known as snow. Since snow and ice made it appearance the Teddy Bear Run did not have any motorcycle involved. Keep it in mind for next year.
This event provides Teddy Bears for hospitalized people to comfort the patients of all ages. In fact, one of our own members benefited from the Teddy Bear Run by receiving a Teddy Bear during his 3 day stay at the hospital.
If you find yourself with a new Teddy Bear sitting around your house please feel free to drop it at Auburn Medical Center it will be put to good use and much appreciated.
********************************************************************************* The “Bazooka Vespa” 150 carried a modified M20 recoilless rifle on it. This modern marvel was actu-ally used by French Airborne Forces. The M20 was developed in the U.S. and is capable of penetrating up to 4” of armor. The Vespa sold for about $500 and could be dropped from an airplane like other items. Yes this is true!
**************************************** Can you imagine firing it?
