ISTANBUL — As thedeath toll from the Istanbulairport attack rose Thurs-day to 44, a senior Turkishofficial said the three suicidebombers who carried it outwere from Russia, Uzbek-istan and Kyrgyzstan, andpolice raided neighborhoodsfor suspects linked to the Is-lamic State group.

Turkish authorities havesaid all information sug-gested the Tuesday nightattack on Ataturk Airport, one of the world’s busiest, was the work of IS, whichboasted this week of havingcells in Turkey, amongother countries.

The police raided 16 lo-cations in three neighbor-hoods on both the Asianand European sides of Is-tanbul, rounding up 13 peo-ple suspected of havinglinks to the Islamic Stategroup.

There was no immediateclaim of responsibility bythe militant group, whichhas used Turkey as a cross-ing point to establish itselfin neighboring Syria andIraq. IS has repeatedlythreatened Turkey in itspropaganda publications, and the NATO member hasblamed IS for several major

bombings in the past year inboth Ankara and Istanbul.

President Recep TayyipErdogan, appearing at theopening of a suspensionbridge in northwesternTurkey with Prime Minis-ter Binali Yildirim, made avague reference to “forces”that don’t want the countryto succeed and are usingterrorism.

He referred to the sepa-ratist Kurdistan Workers’Party, or PKK, the SyrianKurdish militia YPG andthe Islamic State group.

“They have been let

loose against us by theforces who hold theirleashes,” Erdogan said.“The bombs that explode inour country today will to-morrow explode in the handsof those who sent them.”

A senior official, whospoke on condition ofanonymity because govern-ment regulations did notauthorize him to talk to themedia, said the attackerswere from Russia and theCentral Asian nations ofUzbekistan and Kyrgyzs-tan. He could not confirmmedia reports that the Rus-

sian was from the restiveDagestan region in theCaucasus mountains.

A medical team wasworking around the clockto identify the attackers, the official said, notingtheir bodies had sufferedextensive damage.

Kyrgyzstan’s ForeignMinistry denied that an at-tacker came from thatcountry, saying its repre-sentatives had talked toTurkish officials who saidthe identities were still tobe determined.

Asked about the possibleinvolvement of a Russian inthe at tacks , Kreml inspokesman Dmitry Peskovsaid he had no informationon the issue.

There was no commentfrom Uzbekistan.

Russ ian Pres identVladimir Putin has saidthat between 5,000 and7,000 people from Russiaand other nations of theformer Soviet Union havejoined the Islamic Stategroup in Syria and Iraq.

Many Muslims from Rus-sia’s southern region ofChechnya have settled inTurkey since the time ofthe Chechen separatistwars, and Moscow has re-peatedly accused Turkey offailing to cooperate intracking down suspectedterrorists.
