VOLUNTEERS
On the topic of volunteers, these people are the
heart and soul of our sport. Without them targets
don’t get set, handicap books don’t get updated,
shooters don’t have squad sheets, we don’t have
lunch cooked, there is no tea or coffee available,
the no toilet paper in the toilets, I could list so
many more jobs, but I’d run out of room. So, the
next time you’re unhappy about a shoot, ask
yourself if there is something you could do to help
out?
The sport ALWAYS needs more help and
volunteers are limited. So, be kind to the
volunteers because without them, the sport we all
love so much is doomed.
If you disagree with someone, then consider
DISCUSSING it with them or the committee. A
gentle reminder to always remain respectful.
Volunteers are doing their best to grow this sport.

Loose vs Tight Focus
What’s the difference between loose focus and tight focus,
and when should you use each?
There are indeed two types of focus. Peripheral focus (or ambient focus) is characterized by
relaxed eye muscles and provides for a wide field of view. We use ambient focus for reading,
computer work and driving. It is the predominant mode for our eyes throughout our daily lives
and under most circumstances. Acute focus (fovial or central vision focus) involves the
conscious and intense contraction of your eye muscles to narrow your focal field of view. You are
likely to use fovial focus when repairing a chain link necklace with very small links, assembling a
small scale model or performing other close-up work. The relationship between peripheral and
central focus, and the importance of athletes leveraging both when intercepting a moving target,
has been extensively researched and well documented. In clay target sports, a shooter must use
his or her peripheral vision (loose focus) at the visual pick-up point and, once the target is
visually acquired, apply acute central vision focus through shot execution to kill the target.
If you have been shooting sporting clays for a number of years, you have likely noticed that your
ability to visually acquire targets has improved over time. Once you get to a certain level of
technical ability, much of your success will be determined by your ability to correctly employ both
your peripheral and your central vision — your peripheral vision at the visual pickup point to
acquire the target and your acute central vision focus through shot execution. One of the most
common reasons for a miss is a lack of visual intensity on the target through the break point.
This soft focus usually occurs because the shooter either fails to apply acute focus after initially
acquiring the target or the shooter allows his acute focus to soften just prior to shot execution in
order to “check” the lead. Acquiring clay targets with your peripheral vision and following through
visually to kill the target are critical elements of success in clay target shooting.

CLUB NEWS – WANNAMALWritten by Glenn Povey, President
Well things are moving in the right direction for us at Wannamal with our recent Shire approval it’s all
system go to get the club moved to its new location.
Since our last correspondence the club has been securing items that will see us bigger and better at our
new home. Plans are underway with our new club house and ablutions to have them fitted out in Perth
before the move down to Wandering.
The approval process has been long and arduous with having to organise building plans, engineered
drawings for our club house and accommodation, then making sure we follow all of the shire guidelines for
toilets and kitchens the committee has certainly had their patience tested. This said we are certainly
moving forward and will soon have the remainder of the approvals in place.
We held our first shoot on the ground in August, given we had no facilities other than a couple of porta loos
we weren’t sure how many would turn up, if any. At present it is a massive task to set the grounds given
the traps are stored approx. 15km from the grounds so when 41 shooters turned up with 11 being new
shooters from the region, everyone was pleased their efforts hadn’t gone to waste.
The day consisted of two 5 stand layouts, one that was set fairly easy as we had a good showing of locals
to give the sport a try and one slightly more difficult with a fantastic rabbit (“the Jesus Rabbit”), that was
wound up and skipped across the water on one of the dams located on the property. To keep the local
community involved we engaged the services of one of the local swimming clubs in Boddington who kept
everyone fed and watered over the day.
Our second shoot on the grounds was held in September again this was a 5 stand layout, unfortunately it
coincided with our long weekend which meant a lot of people were away but never the less we had a good
turn out with more locals coming to have a go, with great feedback from the locals after the first two shoots
we are confident we will have some new members knocking on the door in the coming season. As we are
yet to have a kitchen set up, we involved the local Wandering food van “Brummell's Brew” who did an
outstanding job keeping everybody well fed for the day.
In the last week of the month we engaged a contractor with a dozer to come to the ground to start clearing
the way for the club house pad and accommodation space. The area was surrounded by a mass of trees
and bush which has now been cleared giving us a good couple of years of fire wood for the future. Thanks
to Ian Callan, Stipo and Murray Cornish for giving up their weekend to cart in gravel and level up the
grounds with a couple of bobcats. The day went without a hitch except for one lonely brick…. I’ll let Ian tell
that story should anyone be game enough to ask.
As the shooting season draws to a close the committee will be continuing its hard work to get the club set
up and operating as soon as possible, I’d like to thank all of the members that have given their time thus
far and the shooters from other clubs that have been down to support our club.

CLUB NEWS – MOORAWritten by Dave Hamilton, Secretary
Moora has been quieter at the grounds with shooters joining in the state qualifying rounds, the Echidna
Park Open & a generally full spring calendar this time of year!
Our Moora club was successful in obtaining a grant from the Moora Shire for 2 Promatic traps and now
have a total of 6 mounted to various trailers. Club members have loaned various heavy earthmoving
machines to repair all the old grounds that had become overgrown over the years.
The Club recently held a stall at the local Moora Show to promote our club and demonstrate traps and
disciplines within our sport to many visitors. The stands main attraction was the Laporte Archery thrower
the Pegasus Clay Target Club generously loaned for the event. We caught the eye of many people &
politicians attending the show with children of all ages having a go! Some old faces from Moora’s
powerhouse days have returned to the club and joined shoots after hearing of our resurgence, names
including Damon Brown, Lindsay Harding & Daryl (Rubber) Staines still in his trademark blue singlet!
The club is keen to hold our first event in the 2019 season with the club nominating for the State
COMPAK event! All clubs have offered any support & help we might need and it has been very
welcomed.
Happy Shooting!
