1. What are input, processing and output of UPS package tracking
system? What technologies are used in UPS? How are these technologies
related to UPS’s business strategy? (25 Marks) ( Urvashi Ramheet)
Introduction
United Parcel Service (UPS), the world's largest air and ground package-distribution company,
started out in 1907 in a closet-size basement office. Jim Casey and Claude Ryan two teenagers
from Seattle with two bicycles and one phone promised the "best service and lowest rates." UPS
has used this formula successfully for more than 90 years.
Today UPS delivers more than 13 million parcels and documents daily throughout the United
States and more than 200 other countries and territories. The firm has been able to maintain its
leadership in small-package delivery services in the face of stiff competition from Federal
Express and Airborne Express by investing heavily in advanced information technology. Over
the past decade, UPS has spent more than $1 billion a year to boost customer service while
keeping costs low and streamlining its overall operations.
Through its automated package tracking system, UPS can monitor packages throughout the
delivery process. At various points along the route from sender to receiver, a bar code device
scans shipping information on the package label; the information is then fed into the central
computer.

1. What are the inputs, processing, and outputs of UPS’s package tracking system?
Inputs: The inputs include package information, customer signature, pickup, delivery, time-card
data, current location (while en route), and billing and customer clearance documentation.
First and foremost, computer handheld device called Delivery Information Acquisition Device
(DIAD) identify to be an input device use by United Parcel Service (UPS) for their package
tracking system. This input device automatically captures customers· signatures along with
pickup, delivery, and time-card information. The driver then places the DIAD into the UPS
trucks adapter, information is then transmitted to UPS computer network for storage and
processing by UPS main computers in Mahwah, New Jersey, and Alpharetta, Georgia.
From there, the information can be accessed worldwide to provide proof of delivery to customers
or to respond to customers queries. Secondly, Bar Code Devices is also identified to be an input
partly because it helps UPS scans shipping information on the package label and then fed into the
central computer. Customer service representatives can check the status of any package from
desktop linked to the central computer and are able to respond immediately to inquiries from
customers.UPS customers can also access this information from the company’s website using
their own computers or wireless devices such as pagers and cell phones.
Processing: The data are transmitted to a central computer and stored for retrieval. Data are also
reorganized so that they can be tracked by customer account, date, driver, and other criteria such
as the consolidation of orders for efficient final delivery of packages. With the new subsidiaries,
UPS now gas also the potential to lease call centre capacity to a customer, handle logistics and
related information exchange for all transactions.
Outputs: The outputs include pickup and delivery times, location while en route, and package
recipient. The outputs also include various reports, such as all packages for a specific account or
a specific driver or route, as well as summary reports for management.

What technologies are used in UPS?
Technology has played a large role in UPS’s ability to expand and grow to serve globally in
more than 200 countries and territories. UPS relies on several technologies to gain a competitive
advantage against rival companies. The company streamlines processes by utilization of
1) bar- code scanning systems
2) wireless networks
3) a mainframe computer
4) a portable computing device
5) Software products and the internets.
The technologies uses in UPS are:
1. UPS net
It is a global electronic data communication network that provides an information processing
pipeline for international package processing and delivery.
2. DIAD
Using a handheld computer device called a DIAD [Delivery Information Acquisition Device],
the driver electronically captures information about each package, including the time of delivery
and even the signature of the person receiving the package. This information is transmitted via
cellular telephone from the package car to UPS computers, where it is available for customers to
trace their packages or verify proof of delivery.
3. UPS – Online- Tools
UPS allows customers to download, free of charge, electronic tools [APIs, that is, Application
Program Interface] which are:
UPS Tracking: Both the shipper and recipient of a package can track the status of the package
directly from the UPS website. Information available from the tracking system includes location
United Parcel Service
7 | P a g e
of the package on its journey from the shipper to recipient and estimated time of delivery of the
package.
UPS Rates and Service Selection: A tool that allows a customer to estimate the cost of
sending a package the customer enters the size and weight of the package, pickup and drop- off
locations and requested service type then a quotation is provided for the cost of sending the
package.
In addition to that the technologies used in UPS consist of handheld computers (DIADs), bar-
code scanners, wired and wireless communications networks, desktop computers, UPS’s central
computer, storage technology for the package delivery data, UPS in-house package tracking
software, and many different pieces of software to access the Internet and many different pieces
of software for tracking packages, calculating fees, maintaining customer accounts, and
managing logistics.
The Web serves as the foundation for new kinds of information systems such as their Web-based
package tracking system. Through the use of DIADs, the UPS drivers automatically capture
customers’ signatures along with pickup, delivery, and time-card information. UPS’s information
systems use these data to track packages while they are being transported. The result is an
information system solution to the business challenge of providing a high level of service with
low prices in the face of mounting competition.
How are these technologies related to UPS’s Business Strategy?
These technologies in long run will bring the company higher revenue. The company’s strategy
is to have the best service but in the lowest price. So by using those technologies in their
company, they are confident that they are having the best service because the technology they
use assures them. UPS has used the same strategy over 90 years. Its strategy is to provide the
United Parcel Service
8 | P a g e
“best service and lowest rates”. One of the most visible aspects of technology is the customer’s
ability to track his/her package via the UPS Web site. However, technology also enables data to
seamlessly flow throughout and helps streamline the workflow at UPS.
Further to that, as we have seen in the case study itself, their plan of action or strategy is to
sustain the core and create their future by:
Using technology to develop new services
Attracting talented people
Studying customer behavior and looking forward their needs
Practicing innovation that leads to growth
Building competencies in the integration of goods, information and funds.
Conclusion
Since 1985 UPS began to improve their data networking applications. They built up their IT network
and database in order to collect and track over 200data elements for every single package. Through
UPS.com new UPS could also serve new B2B companies to use their tracking system with only a link.
UPS also o ffers a set o f t ransport at ion APIs called the UPS Online Too ls that
allow businesses to integrate tracking, rating, address validation and other important jobs.

(2)What problems does UPS’s information system solve? What would happen
if these systems were not available? ( Tarsoo Yaasir )
Today UPS delivers more than 13.6 million parcels and documents each day in the United States
and more than 200 other countries and territories. UPS is a leader in the package delivery
services. The company has gained competitive advantage in accessing up-to-date information as
quickly and immediately as possible.
There are several problems that are solved by the UPS information systems. One would be
routing the delivery truck to shorten the route distance traveled for the packages that are on the
truck.
Moreover, problems that the information systems solve is to keep the level of services high yet
bring the cost and prices down to compete with other competitors. If these systems were not
available then UPS will not be able to compete with others and it will not become the largest
package deliver company as what it is today.
Some problems this information system solves relates directly to logistic and supply chain
activities, not just dot itself but for other companies. This service include supply chain design
and management, freight forwarding, customs brokerage, mail services, multimodal
transportation, and financial services, in addition to logistic services. Because of its advanced
integration of its technology, UPS can provide these services cheaper and more efficient than
most companies can create them in-house.
UPS is able to quickly access up-to-date information on which to make better decisions.
Information systems help UPS managers to make better decisions. Through the use of
information technology, UPS has made their business processes more efficient, which in turn has
resulted in higher revenues.
In addition to that, from customer’s perspective, these technologies provide value because they
help customers complete their tasks more efficiently. These technologies also provide value for
the company because they are seen as an asset from the customers’ perspective. The technologies
are seen as helping the customers’ complete their tasks more efficiently, which in turn is seen as
value-added services as opposed to increasing the cost of sending packages.
This information system helps the management of UPS to make decisions which helps the
company to sustain its competitive advantage. Due to this information system and IT, UPS is
operating and providing services at its best level and efficiently and reaping the benefits and
opportunities for earning and maximizing profits for the company. Customers of the company
are of the view that IT and IS system of the company are the assets of the company which are
adding value to the services provided by the company. If the company had not this IS and IT
system then it could not be able to fulfill its promise of “best service and lowest rates.”

Furthermore, UPS’s information system helps in:
• Operational excellence:
– UPS has maintained leadership in small-package delivery services despite stiff
competition from FedEx and the U.S. Postal System by investing heavily in
advanced information technology.
• New products, services, and business models:
– In June 2009 UPS launched a new Web-based Post Sales Order Management
System (OMS) that manages global service orders and inventory for critical parts
fulfillment. The system enables high-tech electronics, aerospace, medical
equipment, and other companies anywhere in the world that ship critical parts to
quickly assess their critical parts inventory, determine the most optimal routing
strategy to meet customer needs, place orders online, and track parts from the
warehouse to the end user.
• Customer and supplier intimacy:
– Customers can download and print their own labels using special software
provided by UPS or by accessing the UPS Web site. UPS spends more than $1
billion each year to maintain a high level of customer service while keeping costs
low and streamlining its overall operations.
• Improved decision making:
– Special software creates the most efficient delivery route for each driver that
considers traffic, weather conditions, and the location of each stop. UPS estimates
its delivery trucks save 28 million miles and burn 3 million fewer gallons of fuel
each year as a result of using this technology. To further increase cost savings and
safety, drivers are trained to use "340 Methods“developed by industrial engineers
to optimize the performance of every task from lifting and loading boxes to
selecting a package from a shelf in the truck.
• Competitive advantage:
– UPS is leveraging its decades of expertise managing its own global delivery
network to manage logistics and supply chain activities for other companies. Its
Supply Chain Solutions division provides a complete bundle of standardized
services to subscribing companies at a fraction of what it would cost to build their
own systems and infrastructure.
The firm has been able to maintain leadership in small-package delivery services despite stiff
competition from FedEx and Airborne Express by investing heavily in advanced information
technology. During the past decade, UPS has poured billions of dollars into technology and
systems to boost customer service while keeping costs low and streamlining its overall operation.

Using a handheld computer called a Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD), a UPS
driver can automatically capture customers’ signatures along with pickup, delivery, and time-
card information. The driver then places the DIAD into the UPS truck’s vehicle adapter, an
information-transmitting device that is connected to the cellular telephone network. Package
tracking information is then transmitted to UPS’s computer network for storage and processing
in UPS’s main computers in Mahwah, New Jersey, and Alpharetta, Georgia. From there, the
information can be accessed worldwide to provide proof of delivery to customers or to respond
to customer queries.
Through its automated package tracking system, UPS can monitor packages throughout the
delivery process. At various points along the route from sender to receiver, bar-code devices scan
shipping information on the package label; the information is then fed into the central computer.
Customer service representatives can check the status of any package from desktop computers
linked to the central computers and are able to respond immediately to inquiries from customers.
UPS customers can also access this information from the company’s Web site using their own
computers or wireless devices such as pagers and cell phones.
Anyone with a package to ship can access the UPS Web site to track packages, check delivery
routes, calculate shipping rates, determine time in transit, and schedule a pickup. Businesses
anywhere can use the Web site to arrange UPS shipments and bill the shipments to the
company’s UPS account number or to a credit card. The data collected at the UPS Web site are
transmitted to the UPS central computer and then back to the customer after processing. UPS
also provides tools that enable customers such Cisco Systems to embed UPS functions, such as
tracking and cost calculations, into their own Web sites so that they can track shipments without
visiting the Ups site.
A capability called UPS Campus Ship allows employees in multiple offices of a business to
process and ship from their computers and has shipping procedures controlled by a central
administrator set up by the business. Morris, Schneider and Prior LLC, a top law firm serving the
financial services industry, uses this capability to track and control shipping costs. This firm is
constantly sending time-sensitive documents from three different locations to clients throughout
the United States. UPS tools automate the allocation and reporting of this firm’s shipping costs
and even itemize and detail shipping expenses for each client.
Information technology helps UPS reinvent itself and keep growing. UPS is now leveraging its
decades of expertise managing its own global delivery network to manage logistics and supply
chain management for other companies. It created a UPS Supply Chain Solutions division that
provides a complete bundle of standardized services to subscribing companies at a fraction of
what it would cost to build their own systems and infrastructure. These services include supply

chain design and management, freight forwarding, customs brokerage, mail services, multimodal
transportation, and financial services, in addition to logistics services.
What problems does UPS’s information system solve?
Solve activities relate to logistics and supply chain including other companies. These services
include supply chain design and management, customs brokerage, mail services, multimodal
transportation, and financial services. In addition, they it cuts down on travel time, avoids left
turn in urban areas, & save millions of dollars every year. They discovered that if they only make
right turns with their delivery trucks they can spend much less time stopped in traffic. So they
arrange deliveries so that drivers can pretty well eliminate left turns, thus saving the company
millions of dollars in fuel costs each year.
What would happen if these systems were not available?
Firstly, UPS Company will not very efficiency. In addition, customer cannot ask their require by
the internet of the technology were not available, and then UPS would, as it has through most of
its history, attempt to provide that information to its customers, but at higher prices. From the
customers’ perspective, these technologies provide value because they help customers complete
their tasks more efficiently. Customers view UPS’s technology as value-added services as
opposed to increasing the cost of sending packages people cannot know where the package has
arrived. The cost will be increased the whole process will not so convenient.

Question 3: ( Neeta Mayput )
Definition of Web site
A website, also written as Web site, is a set of related web pages containing content such as text,
images, video, audio, etc. A website is hosted on at least one web server, accessible via a
network such as the Internet or a private local area network through an Internet address known as
a Uniform Resource Locator. All publicly accessible websites collectively constitute the World
Wide Web.
A webpage is a document, typically written in plain text interspersed with formatting instructions
of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML, XHTML). A webpage may incorporate elements from
other websites with suitable markup anchors.
Web pages are accessed and transported with the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which
may optionally employ encryption (HTTP Secure, HTTPS) to provide security and privacy for
the user of the webpage content. The user's application, often a web browser, renders the page
content according to its HTML markup instructions onto a display terminal.
The pages of a website can usually be accessed from a simple Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
called the web address. The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although hyper
linking between them conveys the reader's perceived site structure and guides the reader's
navigation of the site which generally includes a home page with most of the links to the site's
web content, and a supplementary about, contact and link page.
Some websites require a subscription to access some or all of their content. Examples of
subscription websites include many business sites, parts of news websites, academic journal
websites, gaming websites, file-sharing websites, message boards, web-based email, social
networking websites, websites providing real-time stock market data, and websites providing
various other services (e.g., websites offering storing and/or sharing of images, files and so forth)

The idea is that all the shipment data has already been collected and stored in the order management
system and picking/packing staff are duplicating this work by key-entering this into the shipping
software, consuming time and leaving room for human error. The method that works best for it will
depend on how configurable the system is and how much shipment data it stores. For example if you
have an off the shelf ordering system that only holds a delivery address, then we may be able to map
fields to the database and pull this detail when processing shipments so users can finalize other detail like
