Assessment of Children with Skeletal Inflicted
Injury
(Physical Abuse-previously NAI)
Seminar
Thursday 30th
June 2016
Queen’s Hospital Romford London
Skeletal injuries are more common under the age 18 months,
but can occur at any age.
Abuse is a leading cause of mortality in infants & children.
80% of deaths from head trauma in children under 2 years are
due to abuse.
Diagnosis of abuse is frequently difficult and must include
sociobehavioral factors and clinical findings.
Multiple fractures in different stages of healing are suggestive
of physical abuse.
Classic metaphyseal fractures, rib fractures, scapula & sternal
fractures are high specificity for skeletal inflicted injuries.
