Rural electrification in Tanzania
• Aiming at medium term results – In collaboration with local institutions
• MEM, CoET-UDSM, TANESCO, REA, WBU, private developers
• Objective – To promote market-based approaches to Micro hydropower
based mini grids in Tanzania to augment rural electrification
• Activities: – Technical assessment and mapping of small scale hydro
hydropower resources in Tanzania
– Capacity building of relevant stakeholders in developing MHP based mini-grids
– Viable business model for rural MH mini grid developed
– Demonstration of technical and economic viability of Micro hydro-power technologies
• Milestone so far-1:

issues related to MHP development
– 5 Masters students specializing on MHP
sponsored at CoET, UDSM
– Training on local fabrication of turbines (7
people from different organisations trained in
Indonesia) – license received
– Establishment of Mini hydro technical centre,
hosted at UDSM, CoET
• Milestone so far-2: • Establishment of Mini hydro technical centre, hosted
at UDSM, CoET
• Six mini/micro-hydropower sites supported at different
stages
• East African Centre for Renewable Energy and
Energy Efficiency (EAC-REEE)
