Arrowhead District
2017-18
This Planning book belongs to: If found, please call: Dear Fellow Scouters,
Thank you for making the decision to become a volunteer in Arrowhead District. I
honestly hope that you enjoy your time serving the Scouts in your units and know that
your time and energy is greatly appreciated.
This Arrowhead District Planning Book is the combined effort of many individuals. All of
us hope that it will serve as a valuable tool in helping you do annual program planning
for your units, and help you deliver a great program to the youth. When you create your
unit calendars, please use this book as a guide to include District and Council events, to
offer training opportunities to your leaders, and to avoid schedule conflicts that might
cause the Scouts to miss out on activities.
Use this booklet as well as the Council generated Program Planning Guide (download:
http://nhscouting.org/) to create your unit’s custom program. The online calendar can
be viewed at http://nhscouting.org/events/ and is another valuable resource presenting
opportunities for training, camping at our Council camps, and fundraising information.
The Arrowhead District Leadership contact information is included. Please note that
everyone except for the District Director are also volunteers. Many are involved as
leaders in their own units as well as being part of the District staff and are dedicated to
making the Scouting program in Arrowhead District the best that it can be! The
Arrowhead District Committee is here to be a resource for you. Let us know your needs
and we will do what we can to provide the help that you need. We are all in this together
– we are all Arrowhead District! Remember our Scout Oath to “help other people at all
times”.
Thank you all for your generosity with your time and talents in promoting the Scouting
program for the benefit of the youth in our District. Whether you realize it or not, you
are making a profound impact on the lives of many that will have lasting benefits for
years to come. As you do your valuable work, remember to set the example for our
Scouts by personally adhering to the Scout Oath and Law. And as you do your Scouting,
have fun. Make it fun for both the Scouts and yourselves!
Yours in Scouting, Steve Spaziani Arrowhead District Chairman

Glossary of District Terms Roundtable – Is held the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Every Pack or Troop sends representatives to get the latest information from the District Staff about upcoming events. This is also the chance to meet other leaders and ask what fun adventures & events that they have done with their Pack, Troop or Crew. Crew officers are encouraged to attend. District Staff – are volunteers (like you!) who work to give a great, fun, safe scouting experience to the youth in the area. Please see the contact info in this book and do not hesitate to ask for help. The District volunteers have over 200 years of scout knowledge between them. We have members of Boy Scout National, Council, and District committees in this group of dedicated scouters. Scouter – any adult that volunteers in the Scout program.
Glossary of Cub Scout Terms
Chuckwagon – is a competitive activity. A group of 4-8 (no more than 9) Cubs (from all ranks) pulls a Chuckwagon around course and does 9-10 games/activities. The Chuckwagon contains items that are used by the Cubs in the games. The boys must do the games without parental help. A PACK Coordinator is required, and registers the PACK for the event. Cub Scout Fun Day – is a non-competitive event. Cubs may register with a Den or alone. No Pack coordinator is needed. Cub Day Camp – A PACK Coordinator is required, and registers the PACK for the event. Drive your Cub(s) to our Day Camp and they can enjoy the outdoors, activities like BB’s, and get them away from the electronic games at home. Discounts are available for parents that are Den Leaders at DAY Camp. Den Chiefs are always welcome! (Pack lunches!)
Family Camping – Come to Camp Carpenter and camp with us! You bring your blankets or sleeping bags, and we provide the tents, food, and fun. Some of the camp facilities are open, like Archery, Pirates Cove or the Fort, BB’s and others!
Resident Camp – Is where your son sleeps in a tent at Camp Carpenter and enjoys all the activities there A PACK Coordinator is required, and registers the PACK for the event
Scouting for Food – is held the first 2 weekends in November. It is the Scouts’ Nationwide Service Project. First weekend we put out door hangers asking folks to donate food. The following weekend we pick it up. Pack Coordinator is recommended.
Lion & Tiger Cub Fun Day – is a non-competitive event. Cubs may register with a Den or alone. No Pack coordinator is needed.
Webelos Alley – For Webelos/AOL ONLY. Is a competitive event held the first weekend in February at the same time as the Klondike Derby. The boys pull winter sleds around a course and do events/games. There are ribbons awarded for the top 3 Dens. A PACK Coordinator is required, and registers the PACK for the event. Webelos/AOL Campout – Parents/guardians camp with their Webelos cubs at Fall or Spring camporees. A PACK Coordinator is required, and registers the PACK for the event. The coordinator works with the local Boy Scout Troop to handle meals & camping space. The Webelos should eat with a Patrol, parents eat with Troop Leaders.
Glossary of Boy Scout Terms Camporee – Is a competitive event held in the fall & spring. The Patrols of 4-8 Scouts traverse a course where they compete in scout skills like first aid, or orienteering, and in fun games like paintball or obstacle course. The theme varies from year to year. The events always include scout skills. A Troop Coordinator is required, and registers the Troop for the event. Klondike Derby - Is a competitive event held in the February. The Patrols of 4-8 Scouts pull a dog-sled around a course where they compete in scout skills like first aid, or orienteering, and team building games. The theme varies from year to year. A Troop Coordinator is required, and registers the Troop for the event. Scouting for Food – is held the first 2 weekends in November. It is the Scouts’ Nationwide Service Project. supplant, unit program.
A district activities committee does the following:
1. Plans and promotes a well-balanced schedule of district events, and recruits teams to carry them out.
2. Decides how Scouting can become involved in selected needs and interests of communities in the district. Helps Scout units take part in community service projects in such a manner that youth members learn qualities of good citizenship.
3. Plan and promote Good Turn for America projects at both a district and unit level.
4. Promotes and assists with the planning of council events (such as the council show or Eagle Scout dinner).
5. Promotes and carries out the district's share of national events (such as Scouting Anniversary Week or a national jamboree).
6. Conducts an annual poll of unit leaders to determine unit needs and interests for district activities.

How do you write a press release, or an article? It’s really simple. Just do the following:
---
PRESS RELEASE TITLE IN ALL CAPS
Town, NH— The first paragraph covers the who, what, when, where, and why. Get all that info in up front. Don’t worry about them not liking your work.
Second paragraph – more info & reasons. This is the place to put in examples or details that you skipped in the first paragraph. “Troop XX has been in town since 19ZZ, and has YY members.”
Third paragraph – get a quote in there! “Create” a quote from a participant, or organizer. You can also put in something from Jack Gaylord, Arrowhead District Director. Like – Jack Gaylord says “put something in here about how much fun the event will be. How Scouting is a family values organization. Or whatever sounds good.” Photos are HUGE – get pictures of SMILING HAPPY FACES of the boys. Get the first name, unit info and home town. You can join Scouts at any time! For additional information on Boy Scouts in the Nashua area, please contact Jack Gaylord at (603) 625-6431 or visit www.BeAScout.org to find a unit near you.

Commissioner Service
District Commissioner: Bob Cormier
(603) 505-6010 [email protected]
"It is the mission of the Arrowhead District Commissioner Service to
help Scout units provide a quality program for their members. In doing
so the values of Scouting will be brought to more youth, more
effectively."
Commissioners provide important leadership to ensure quality Scouting. We advise, mentor, coach, counsel, and recommend, to help YOU make scouting a great place for your youth.
We need YOUR leadership experience! Become a commissioner
and make a difference by:
Bringing Scouting to more boys
Developing new leaders
Sharing your experiences
The commissioner service is looking for men and women volunteers
who would like to help Scouting by sharing their knowledge and
experiences with other Scouters.
Successful Scout units do not just happen. They are made. They are
made by leaders who are trained, coached, and counseled along the
way by those who went before them. You probably had someone help
you as you learned how to be a Scout leader so you know how important
it is to have guidance in developing a successful Pack, Troop, Team or
Crew. You have an opportunity to help other leaders be successful by
serving as a commissioner. By helping leaders build strong units you will
be insuring that the values of Scouting are brought effectively to more
youth.

this purpose as follows:
The 2nd Tuesday of each month for project reviews.
The 4th Wednesday of each month (except December) for boards of review.
During the summer months of July and August there are no regularly scheduled meetings but we will meet on an as-needed basis. Scouts who forward their Eagle applications to council after June 1st should include a note to the district on whether they will be attending college in the fall. All reasonable attempts will be made to hold a board of review before Aug 15th for scouts attending college in the fall.

Training Committee
Committee Chair – Bob Sitar (603) 886-0834 Email: [email protected]
The leadership training philosophy is to provide adult leaders with fundamental information about the aims and purposes of the movement, as well as specifics about their particular roles in Scouting. A trained leader is knowledgeable and confident in the role being performed. The knowledge and confidence of a trained leader are quickly sensed by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, or Venturers and are a positive influence on their lives.
Train leaders - don't just run training course.
Plan and implement an effective, year-round leadership training program for the district to provide continuing training opportunities for all leaders, regardless of position
Develop procedures for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of the district leadership training program. report training progress regularly to the council committee
Establish priorities. Develop and carry out a plan to accomplish those priorities
Select, recruit, and train an effective team of instructors
Plan, promote, conduct, and evaluate all district training events
Recognize leaders who complete training requirements
See that high standards are set and met by all instructors
Maintain adequate district training records
Conduct an annual survey of training needs in the district
Keep informed of literature, audiovisuals, and equipment aids for the leadership training program
Have an approved budget for training events
Support and encourage all pack trainers
Create an account at my.scouting.org and use it to manage your unit’s training. You can also find Youth Protection Training there. It outdates every 2 years.
Membership Committee
Committee Chair – Donna Cormier
(603) 465-2726 [email protected]

Work with units to prepare for their Signup Night

Family Friends of Scouting
Committee - Chair Karen Bourn
(603) 809-4121 [email protected]
TJM Help support your local camps & programs!
Friends of Scouting is a critical yearly fundraising campaign that assists the Daniel Webster Council in offsetting program costs and providing quality service. The true cost of Scouting is much greater than what local dues and event or camping fees cover.
All packs, troops, teams, and crews are encouraged to participate in the campaign in the first quarter of every year to give families the opportunity to contribute. Requests are also made to local business and community supporters through district and council community campaigns. Schedule your presentation as part of your annual calendar planning and encourage participation - everything helps to support a strong Scouting program in the Arrowhead District.
Finance Committee
Committee Chair – Dave Lowrance
(603) 465-7698 [email protected]
A district finance committee does the following:
Obtain and understand the district's portion of funds to be raised toward the council budget
Organize and carry out a successful Friends o Scouting annual campaign n the district, and meet the goal by the target date
Promote the council plan for endowment development
Inform units of unit finance policies
Provide recognition to donors, along with information on how their dollars helped serve youth
