Keep your professional reputation intactand avoid falling into a social media trapONLINE networking is a great way to makebusiness contacts and widen your profes-sional network.

Get your social media activity right and itcould help you land a job. Get it wrong and itcould damage your professional reputation.Here are some mistakes you should avoid:

1. Having a dodgy photo (or none at all).Employers and recruiters like to put a face

to a name, and people are less likely to acceptan online invitation if they can’t see whoit’s coming from. Use the same image acrossall of your networking sites to help create astrong personal brand.

The only thing worse than no photo? Asnap of you sipping cocktails, where you’vecut other people out of the shot, and selfiestaken with your pet, child or spouse. A littlepersonality is allowed, especially in crea-tive industries, but as a rule you should usea well-lit professional headshot that clearlyshows your face. Don’t be tempted to use aphoto from 10 or 20 years ago. You don’t wantthe interviewer to meet you and wonder whatelse you’ve been deceptive about.

2. Connecting with anyone and everyone.When it comes to online connections, think

quality not quantity and only accept requestsfrom people in your industry or profession.Connecting with people who aren’t relevantweakens the quality of your network. You’realso less likely to be ‘spammed’ with irrel-evant information from strangers that way.

3. Not asking for recommendations.If you’ve had a positive experience with

a manager or client, ask them for a recom-mendation. Upload it as a testimonial on yourwebsite or social networking page. Send theperson a personalised message rather thanusing the template provided on the network-ing site, and don’t be afraid to ask them tocomment on a particular skill you would liketo promote. Recruiters use professional net-working sites to head-hunt talent, and a goodrecommendation from the right person couldland you a job. Worse than no recommenda-tions? Reviews from your peers, mother orfriends. Tit-for-tat overblown recommenda-tions will lessen your credibility.

4. Not updating your status.Why go to the trouble of building an audi-

ence if you aren’t going to use it? Updatingyour status regularly (at least once a week)shows that you’re active and engaged. Tellothers about your professional achievementsand progress, such as clients or awardsyou’ve won, or link out to a feature you’vewritten. If you only update your status anddetails when you’re job hunting, it’s a clearsign to your current manager that you’relooking to leave.

5. Exaggerating the truth.You never know who will be looking at your

profile. That creative ‘embellishment’ (whenyou gave yourself a retrospective promotionor took credit for someone else’s work) will

be seen by previous managers and colleagues,as well as potential employers. People talk,and industries can be more insular than youthink.

Recruiters may check your professionalnetworking page against your CV, and cancross-check facts online. Any inconsistencies – dates of employment, job titles or responsi-bilities – are an immediate red flag. That fibon your online profile has the potential to tripyou up at interview and worse still, damageyour professional reputation for years tocome. Is it worth it?

6. Not using keywords.Recruiters and hiring managers use profes-

sional networking sites as a search engine,typing in keywords to find potential talent.Make sure you name appears top of the listby using targeted keywords in your headline,summary and job descriptions. Avoid non-sense descriptions – recruiters aren’t likely tosearch on ‘story-telling guru’ but might wanta ‘copywriter’ and avoid overused words like‘creative’ and ‘dynamic’. You should demon-strate, rather than tell, why you have thosequalities in your profile.

7. Asking for favours too soon.Pitching your services to someone as soon

as they connect with you online is a mistake.Instead, build trust and rapport by sharinglinks to information they might find interest-ing or answering a question they’ve postedonline. Being an active member of the site, by

joining debates and sharing useful informtion about your industry, takes time butvastly increases your credibility.

8. Not adjusting your privacy settings.If you’re job hunting, consider chang-

ing your privacy settings on professionalnetworking sites. That way, your recentactivity won’t show on your feed and youboss won’t be able to see when you connewith a recruiter or follow a new company.you’re going to use a social networking sisuch as Facebook to connect with employmake sure you clean up your page first. Ifyou’re unsure, set personal pages to privaand connect with employers via professionetworking sites instead.
