Center, of a 7,500gallonconcrete, potable rainwaterharvesting system in a singlefamily home that is alsoserved by a traditional utilitywater connection. The authorsconclude that "...a welldesigned and maintainedresidential rainwaterharvesting system can reduceor eliminate storm waterrunoff, diminish municipalwater demand and deliverhighquality, competitivelypriced potable water..."
Data gathered during thethreeyear study revealed very clear, clean treated rainwater;utility water consumption less than 1/3 the average; zerostormwater runoff; and treated rainwater costing 3.4¢ pergallon compared to 2.3¢ per gallon for utility water with thegap shrinking as more "free" rainwater is collected. Annualtests of the rainwater easily exceeded all EPA Primary andSecondary Drinking Water standards..
The authors also observed that "...beyond traditional returnon investment calculations...the quality and security of waterdelivered by an onsite rainwater harvesting system providescompellingalbeit unquantifiablebenefits."
