Archery World Cup Final 2010 Edinburgh

The fifth Archery World Cup Final took place on 18-19 September 2010 in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city. East Princes Street Gardens provided a spectacular venue for the biggest World Cup Final ever, with this year’s event involving 32 archers instead of 16. It was also the first time the Final was held over two days. First up on Saturday 18 September were the men’s compound and women’s recurve events. Italy’s Sergio PAGNI became an Archery World Cup history maker when he became the first archer to successfully defend a Grand Final title. He took the men’s compound title with victory over Braden GELLENTHIEN of the United States, in what was a repeat of the gold medal match 12 months before in Copenhagen.

A Korean archer won the recurve women’s World Cup Final gold medal for the second year running. YUN Ok Hee followed in the footsteps of KWAK Ye Ji 12 months before by defeating Ukraine’s Victoriya KOVAL in a tense final.

On Sunday 19 September it was the compound women and recurve men's turn to shoot their matches. The young American Brady ELLISON proved just why he is a potential Olympic champion of the future with a stunning victory in the recurve men's event. ELLISON, 22, won the title with victory over the current team Olympic champion IM Dong Hyun (KOR) in the gold final.

In compound women the current world champion from Russia Albina LOGINOVA also took gold. She won in a 1-arrow shoot-off against Ashley WALLACE of Canada in a top quality final.

In each discipline the best mixed teams of the World Cup season also came to Edinburgh to shoot against the host Great Britain. In the recurve event team USA with Brady ELLISON and Jennifer NICHOLS beat Simon TERRY and Naomi FOLKARD 138-133. Nicky HUNT teamed up with Chris WHITE to win the compound mixed team tournament 155-150, beating Mexico's pairing of Linda OCHOA and Hafid JAIME.

Stage 4 Shanghai

The last World Cup stage of the year took place from 31 August to 4 September in Shanghai, China. This event was the last chance to qualify for the World Cup Final 2010 Edinburgh. The two individual gold medals at stake in the recurve division went to Korean archers, IM Dong-Hyun (men) and KI Bo Bae (women). In compound the winners were Shaun TEASDALE (NZL) and Nicky HUNT (GBR). In the team competition India won the gold medal in the recurve men's category and Korea in the women’s. In compound the winning teams were the Australian men and the American women. In the mixed team events, the gold medals went to Korea (recurve) and Mexico (compound). With this victory, the pair from Mexico qualified for the World Cup Final in Edinburgh. In recurve team USA was already selected for Edinburgh before Shanghai. World Archery Fan Reporters

This season World Archery introduced a new volunteer media programme called Archery Fan Reporter (AFR) in their major events. The reporters developed daily stories (3-5 minutes in length) about aspects of major archery international events that were posted on www.archery.tv. The four selected reporters Melis BAGATIR (TUR), Robert HANSON (USA), ZHU Tian Shun and SONG Jia Yi (CHN) posted 20 videos on the Archery TV on YouTube that have been viewed more than 42,000 times so far. Melis BAGATIR from Turkey was the first one to take this role at the Field World Championships in Visegrad (HUN) in July. Then, 30-year old Robert HANSON (USA) took the role at the World Cup Stage 3 in Ogden, USA in August. Finally, ZHU Tian Shun and SONG Jia Yi (CHN) were the AFR in Shanghai for the World Cup stage 4 at the beginning of September. SONG Jia Yi, Cedric ROGER (FITA TV), ZHU Tian Shun

The reporters were helped by the expertise of Hit the Roof Sàrl, which ensures the TV production of the archery broadcasts. Finally the pool of 2010 AFR was judged by a FITA review panel and the two Chinese candidates were declared the winners.

Robert HANSON was invited to the World Cup Final in Edinburgh on 18-19 September 2010 to film the 'back of the scenes' of the event. ZHU Tian Shun and SONG Jia Yi will be invited by World Archery to go to Porec, Croatia for the World Cup 2011 Stage 1. They will perform the AFR videos in this competition as the prize of winning the contest in 2010. Archery TV

The official highlights and Archery Fan Reporter's videos of the Archery World Cup Final 2010 Edinburgh are now on Archery TV. All matches have been published. The videos of the Archery Fan Reporter Robert HANSON (USA) in Edinburgh are also available on www.archery.tv:

The 26-minute highlights will be broadcast in numerous countries in the world including Great Britain (Sky), Korea (SBS), India (Ten Sports), Italy (RAI), Turkey (TRT) and France (Sport +) . Finally, the BBC has done its own 26-minute highlights. However, this is accessible in Great Britain only at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/archery/9014245.stm.

World Archery Fan Questionnaire

In February 2010 World Archery launched a questionnaire to know what archery fans think of World Archery events and how they follow archery in general. All completions were entered into a prize draw to win a trip for two to the Edinburgh World Cup Final. The winner of the contest was Laura KOURULA from Finland by drawing lots among the more than 1,400 fans who replied to the online survey. She took the trip to Edinburgh with Matti HATAVA. They are both 29-year old archers competing in Finland and at international level. Read their interview on www.archeryworldcup.org.

Honours Olympic Champion meets Pope Benedict XVI

The Italian Archery Federation represented by FITARCO President Mario SCARZELLA, 2004 Olympic champion Marco GALLIAZO, and FITA Secretary General and FITARCO Honorary Member Tom DIELEN, had the honour to be presented to the Pope Benedict XVI during his audience on 15 September 2010 at the Vatican. FITARCO was chosen by the Pope as they had won most medals in major international competitions the last years as Italian Federation. Other Italian team members present included Mauro NESPOLI, silver medallist at the Beijing Games, Natalia VALEEVA, twice world champion and Olympic bronze medallist, Olympian Elena TONETTA, Jessica TOMASI and the most recent medallist, Gloria FILIPPI who won gold at the Youth Olympics. Also present was the Paralympic medallist Oscar DE PELLEGRIN, new world record holder and the FITARCO Secretary General Alvaro CARBONI. Mario SCARZELLA presented a small silver bow to the Pope and informed him of the Archery World Cup Final taking in Edinburgh this week-end. Due to a coincidence in planning, the Pope will actually visit Edinburgh on Thursday and will pass next to the venue for the World Cup Final! During the audience close to 10,000 people were present and it was broadcast live on TV. After the audience a special visit was organised and the FITARCO delegation were also welcomed by the Vicario of the Vatican and the Secretary General of the Vatican.

Judges

International Youth Judge Seminar During the World Cup Stage 4 in Shanghai at the beginning of September 2010, and thanks to the Organising Committee, the FITA Judges Committee organised the 2nd international youth judge seminar. Combination with high level World Cup makes it possible for the candidates to observe how an event on FITA level is carried through, and thus gives a first class lecture for the youngsters. In addition to being able to observe and learn from the judges' performance on the spot, the candidates had lessons re judge duties in general, judging philosophy, judges procedures and of course all the specialities and understanding of our rules.

Past Events World Archery University Championships

The 8th World University Archery Championships were held from 23 to 26 September 2010 in Shenzhen, China, with 136 archers from 20 countries and many past elite world champions and medallists among them. The finals took place in the big Shenzhen stadium under perfect conditions. The level of the competition was quite high. The gold final of the compound men's competition was just thrilling as the two Americans Adam GALLANT—the winner—and Daniel WIDO were shooting perfectly and had to go to a final tiebreak. The bronze medal went to the Salvadorian Roberto HERNANDEZ who was really impressive in his last match against Julien DEPOITIER (BEL). In compound women the No. 2 in the world Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA) finished 3rd of a competition won by the Iranian Halilmian AVVAL SEYEDEH VIDA in front of SEOK Ji Hyun (KOR), 2nd. photo Gold and silver in the recurve men's individual event went to Korea with KIM Seong Hoon and JIN Jae Wang. The bronze was for Piotr PIATEK of Poland. On the women's side, the gold and bronze medals were won by Korea as well with JO Eun Jae and KIM Ye Seul. Pia Carmen LIONETTI (ITA) took silver. Six finals were at the agenda of the last day of competition. Three team finals in compound and three US gold medals: the mixed team with Erika ANSCHUTZ and Adam GALLANT, the women's team with Erika ANSCHUTZ, Lindsay CHRISTENSEN and Samantha NEAL, and the means team with Adam GALLANT, Steve GATTO and Daniel WIDO relegated respectively Iran and Finland, Iran and Korea, and Italy and Belgium on the lower steps of the podium. The recurve mixed team competition saw the victory after a thrilling tie break of Pia LIONETTI and Mauro NESPOLI from Italy over Japan, while Chinese Taipei finished third. The women’s competition was for the unbeatable threesome of Korean JO Eun Ae, KIM Ye Seul and LEE Kyung Joo, the silver for Chinese Taipei and the bronze for Japan. The men’s title went to the Japanese Taichi BANNO, Yoshitaka NISHIMURA and Hiroki SUETAKE. Korea and Italy joined them on the podium. The event ended with a very convivial Closing Ceremony. This real test event for the forthcoming Summer Universiade in 2011 will be more than useful for the organisers. More information, results and photos on www.worldarchery.org and www.fisu.net.

World Ranking Event in Chile

Venezuela won three individual and three team gold medals at the Bicentenario World Ranking Tournament (WRE) held in Santiago de Chile on 6-13 September 2010. Jaileen BRAVO beat Olympian Leidys BRITO 7-3 to win the recurve women's gold in an all-Venezuelan match. BRITO had won the FITA Round two days before with the only score over 1300 in the recurve division: 1315. Colombian veteran Maria Victoria ECHAVARRIA came in third as she defeated Virginia CONTI (ARG). The recurve men's gold was taken by Elias MALAVE (VEN) in a 6-2 match versus Daniel REZENDE XAVIER (BRA). Top seeded Oscar TICAS (ESA) shot a 10 to win a shoot-off against Chile’s Mario VALDES for the bronze medal. Two surprises occurred in the compound division, as juniors Ana MENDOZA (VEN) and Francisco ROJAS (COL) capitalised ahead of contenders who included World Cup medallists Olga BOSCH (VEN) and Roberval DOS SANTOS (BRA). MENDOZA defeated BOSCH 6-4 for gold, while Brazilian Talita DE ARAUJO won a shoot-off versus the winner of the FITA Round (1373) Carolina MONTES (VEN). ROJAS overwhelmed Argentina’s Gabriel MARTI 6-0, while Nestor GAUTE (ARG) took the bronze. DOS SANTOS, who had shot a 1393 FITA Round, lost his 1/8 match against teammate Luciano VAZ ALVARENGA. Venezuela won the recurve women, compound women and compound mixed team events. Chile did very well in the recurve mixed team event to defeat Ecuador, a team which had shot the best score (144) in semifinal. Brazil won the recurve men and compound men team events. The Brazilian compound team shot a wonderful 237 in the gold medal match versus Venezuela, a score only one point shy of the world record set by the Dutch team in El Salvador in 2006. Despite the fact that this was the first WRE ever held in Chile, the organisers put together a wonderful event. Results can be found on www.coparco.org. Archery GB National Series

Simon TERRY is an Archery GB National Series champion for the second year running, while Naomi FOLKARD, Chris WHITE and Nichola SIMPSON have all won their first titles. The four archers all triumphed in their respective events at the National Series Grand Final, held at Jephson Gardens in Leamington Spa, United Kingdom. TERRY beat Rob HALLWORTH in a thrilling recurve men’s final to successfully defend the title he won at Lilleshall 12 months ago. But HALLWORTH, in his first Grand Final, made him fight to the very end. In the recurve women’s tournament, there was a victory on home soil for Leamington born and bred FOLKARD, who defeated the defending champion Charlotte BURGESS. In the compound events, SIMPSON and WHITE turned silver into gold this year, having both finished runners-up 12 months ago. SIMPSON won her gold medal following a 6-2 semi-final victory over Dani BROWN, and then an 8-2 victory over Andrea GALES in the final, where she fought back from a set down to win the next four, and secure the championship. And WHITE won the compound men’s tournament with an 8-4 victory over Liam GRIMWOOD in a closely fought contest. After winning the first set, WHITE—who beat European champion Andy RIKUNENKO in the semifinals—always had the upper hand over GRIMWOOD, but could never relax. The GB National Series follows the Archery World Cup concept at national level. The matches were held according to the best of seven sets system. All results on www.agbns.org

Future Events Commonwealth Games 2010 Around 125 athletes from 24 countries will participate in the Commonwealth Games New Delhi 2010. Archery is making its return to these Games since its 1982 debut in Brisbane, Australia. The Delhi archery competition will take place at the Yamuna Sports Complex from 4-10 October 2010 with some of the finest archers in the world. A total of 10 athletes present in New Delhi have just competed in the Archery World Cup Final in Edinburgh on 18-19 September. This event regrouped the top archers of the world, including Jayanta TALUKDAR, Dola BANERJEE and Deepika KUMARI from India, Simon TERRY, Alan WILLS, Naomi FOLKARD, Nicky HUNT and Chris WHITE from England as well as Ashley WALLACE (CAN) and Shaun TEASDALE (NZL). HUNT and TEASDALE also won the last World Cup 2010 Stage in Shanghai at the beginning of September. Three medallists from last year world championships have made the trip to New Delhi as well. Liam GRIMWOOD (ENG) took silver in compound men at 2009 Ulsan, while Stephen CLIFTON (NZL) earned bronze. In Korea, the 18-year old Jorina COETZEE (RSA) won silver in compound women. Eight medallists from the 2007 world championships will also compete at the Commonwealth Games. English star Alison WILLIAMSON and FOLKARD were part of the British team who won the recurve women team’s bronze in 2007. The entire compound men’s team of Australia—Clint FREEMAN, Patrick COGHLAN, Robert TIMMS—were the runner-ups at the world championships 2007. Numerous athletes have also taken part in the Olympic Games and two of them have won medals. TERRY won bronze both in individual and team at Barcelona 1992, while WILLIAMSON earned bronze in individual at Athens 2004. Let’s not forget as well that Australia’s coach Simon FAIRWEATHER was the individual champion at Sydney 2000. Moreover the Paralympic gold medallist Danielle BROWN has been named in England's archery squad for the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. The 22-year old will become the first Paralympian to represent England in an able-bodied event at the Games. She will compete in compound women together with Nicky HUNT and Nichola SIMPSON. The qualifications will be held on Monday 4 October 2010. Then eliminations will take place on 5-6 October. Compound team finals, recurve team finals, compound individual finals and recurve individual finals will be competed from 7 to 10 October. More on www.worldarchery.org.

London 2012 Olympic Games Lord’s has been given planning permission to host the Olympic archery events in 2012. Permission was granted by the Planning and City Development Committee at their meeting on 2 September 2010.
