Reaching Out, Inviting In
In the book of Acts, in the first days of the church, the
disciples had no building to invite people to, no
scheduled worship services, no small groups. When
they said, “Jesus” or “Christ” they weren’t even sure
that anyone would know what they were talking
about. The disciples couldn’t just come on Sunday
morning and wait for people to come in. The disciples
had to go out, talk to people, tell them what God had
done for them, and then they basically invited people
to join them, be part of their friendship group and eat
with them.
That is probably a better model for evangelism for us
today than the two options as Christians we think of:
strong arm proselytizing, and doing nothing and
waiting for people to come in our doors on Sunday.
During the Easter Season, our theme is “Reaching Out,
Inviting In”. We’re going to be focusing on the
readings in Acts and thinking about how we can tell
people about God and Jesus and invite them in.
As well as talking about it, our Outreach Team is
creating events at the end of the season so you can
invite people to them:
• April 26th, we’ll be making care packages
for our home-bound members and for our
elderly neighbors (who we’ve helped on
our Fall Service Day)
• May 6th, we’ll deliver packages in groups
to our friends
• May 13th, we’ll have Muffins and Moms,
you can invite your mom (or any other
favorite person!) and we’ll share some
muffins and other sweet treats in front of
the church.
All these events will be after worship, so people
can come to worship and stay for the events.
Gethsemane is a unique congregation. We love to
welcome people and to make new friends. Tell people
you know what God is doing here and ask them to join
in!

GLC Mentor Applications Being Accepted
As part of Gethsemane's commitment to inter-generational faith formation, the implementation of a mentorship
program is underway and we are currently accepting applications to become a mentor. Applications may be
obtained out in the narthex, and returned to Joel Wildermuth or Pastor June. Follow-up to the application will
include a mentor workshop in April (TBA) and a picnic in May (TBA) for mentors, parents, and children/youth. We
hope to have matches made by the time our Confirmation and High School Youth go to Houston, TX for the ELCA
Youth Gathering. We hope that cultivating mentor relationships between our children and the more seasoned
members of our faith community will deepen, enrich, and embolden our call to be disciples of Jesus Christ in this
world.

Earth Day
Mark Keller
Imagine pushing your car twenty to thirty miles. That
is what we expect from one gallon of gas on which we,
grudgingly, spend $2.50. Let’s gather on this Earth Day
to explore the role cheap oil plays in the support of
our society. Let’s examine the pivotal role oil plays in
the price and availability of agricultural and consumer
goods, and in our increasingly complex society. Let’s
discover ways to be good stewards of God’s gift of this
earth.

Invite a Friend Service Project
This Sunday people of all ages will join together in the
Great Hall to make care packages for our neighbors,
our home-bound members, and our college students.
People can pack boxes, sort cookies, make cards,
there will be something for everyone! This is a great
opportunity to invite a friend to come and join us in
serving others!
Resumes on Wednesday, April 4, 12:00 pm.
The group will choose the next list of books
to read at their April 25th
meeting at 7:30pm
in the church library. Bring some titles to
choose from. All are welcome.

THITHITHITHIS & THATS & THATS & THATS & THAT
What’s New with Health Ministry?
As some have noticed, the monthly blood pressure screenings are in a
new place. In an effort to be more HIPPA compliant and to provide a
more relaxing atmosphere, arrangements were made to use the glass-
walled room off the daycare lunchroom. Please look for the “Blood
Pressures Here” sign. Extra chairs will be set up outside the room for
those waiting. Screenings available the first Sunday of each month
both prior to and after the church service.
The Health Ministry bulletin board in Atrium Way will hopefully be viewed as a source of both information and
education. Here you will find; Information regarding upcoming health-related events - example: Red Cross Blood
Drive, and Information regarding timely monthly health topics that is relevant and important - example: Skin
Cancer and Sunscreens.
Here’s to your good health,
Pam Seidelmann, Health Ministry Chair
Volunteer Opportunities at Faith Mission
Please consider joining our Thrivent Action Team serving Faith Mission during the week of April 9-13. On Monday,
April 9 we will work from 10 am - noon in the donation room sorting items to be used by FM clients, with
transportation available from Gethsemane at 9:30. On Wednesday morning we will take the food to be prepared
and served Friday along with the collected items for the donation room to FM at 245 Grant Ave. On Friday, April
13 we will serve dinner from 5:15-7:45 to women and families first, and then the men. You can also participate by
making desserts such as brownies and cookies and bringing them to the upstairs kitchen by noon that Friday. Sign-
up sheets are in the Narthex. Contact Rick Langner with questions (312-361-4047).

PLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARN
Greetings from Play & Learn!
With spring’s arrival and warmer temperatures to follow, the Play & Learn staff and children are looking
forward to once again spending more time outside enjoying sunshine, fresh air, and nature.
April will be bustling with activity at Play & Learn.
Sunday, April 15th will be Play & Learn Sunday at Gethsemane. There will be a presentation and slideshow at
the beginning of the worship service and refreshments afterward. Then during the adult education hour there
will be a discussion of Play & Learn happenings including a question and answer session followed by a tour of
the child care classrooms. Children’s artwork will also be on display in the Great Hall.
Play & Learn will participate in the national Week of the Young Child Celebration April 16th-20th. Highlights of
the week include a family lunch, a center-wide pajama day, and our annual spring concert on Thursday, April
19th at 6:30 p.m. The children are faithfully practicing and eagerly awaiting their BIG performances that night.
If you are looking for an enjoyable night of entertainment, feel free to join us!

Highlights of Council Meeting – March 12, 2018
Copies of the Council Minutes and Financial Report are posted in Atrium Way. PLEASE
READ BUT LEAVE POSTED.
Pastor’s Report
• Four new members will be welcomed into the congregation during
worship on March 18.
• Holy Week is coming up at the end of this month.
Officers’ Reports
President’s report
• No report
Vice President’s report
• No report
Secretary’s report
• The February minutes were approved via email responses.
Treasurer’s Report
• Jeff responded to a couple of questions about the February financial
reports, which he had distributed prior to the meeting.
• A generous bequest has been received from Manfred Maeffert.
Liaisons’ reports:
• Day Care– There was a question as to who represents Play and Learn on
the Financial Resources Ad Hoc Committee (the committee that has been
following up on recommendations of the Facilities Task Force). This
committee consists of the Pastor and Council President, Vice President,
and Treasurer. Director, Brenda Weilbacher, is consulted on matters
pertaining to Play and Learn. Jane will remind Brenda to send Day Care
Committee minutes to Council and staff.
• Properties – Bill reported that there have been a number of medium cost
maintenance items. Utilities are currently about $2,000 below budget
and will have to remain at that level or greater, and there will have to be
no more unexpected maintenance items, in order to stay on budget.
• Outreach – A postcard will be sent out prior to Easter. An outreach
program is planned for after Easter. The online giving project is making
good progress.
• There was discussion as to how to maintain communication between the
various committees/teams and Council so that Council knows what the
committees/teams are doing and they are aware of Council business that
10
COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTSCOUNCIL HIGHLIGHTSCOUNCIL HIGHLIGHTSCOUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS -------- continuedcontinuedcontinuedcontinued
• affects them. The liaisons need to check in regularly with their counterparts and should remind them to
send copies of minutes to Council and Staff.
• The Chamber Music Connection will be presenting a concert in our sanctuary on May 18. Mike will follow
up on some questions as to the agreement between that group and Gethsemane.
Unfinished Business
• Council reviewed and approved an update to the methodology that is used each year to determine the
medical-allowance component of compensation for the Parish Secretary.
New Business
• Jeff presented the recommendation by the Financial Resources Ad Hoc Committee for a Fundraising
Campaign. The detailed presentation included a case statement, the estimated source of campaign
proceeds, and the expected use of campaign proceeds, including a preliminary distribution of project
costs.
o The Committee moved, seconded by Jane, that Council approve a fundraising campaign based
upon the parameters set forth in the recommendation document. The motion passed
unanimously.
o The Committee moved, seconded by Jim, that Council approve the set-aside (separate from GLC’s
Operating Fund) of the bequest from Manfred Maeffert, with the intent that it be used:
▪ To fund the campaign (as needed) to reach the campaign target.
▪ For other purposes (to be determined by Council) to the extent that the bequest is not
needed to reach the campaign target.
▪ To support cash flow needs, in the event that critical repairs are needed before campaign
proceeds are available.
The motion passed unanimously.
• Council discussed the Personnel Committee’s Staff Performance Review Policies and Procedures proposal
that was distributed prior to the meeting. Jane moved approval of the proposal with a few minor
amendments as discussed. Seconded by Jeff, the proposal passed.
• As indicated on the GLC calendar, the process for establishing the budget for next fiscal year is to
commence in March. Jeff will be sending out a template for input from involved parties this week. The
proposed budget needs to be finalized in time for a Congregational vote on May 20.
• Pastor June will recruit representatives for the upcoming Synod Assembly.
Announcements
• Next Meeting: April 16, 2018. After April, meetings will held on the second Monday of the month.
Jim moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Paul. Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Jane Sieberth, Secretary
