Homemaker Volunteer opportunity 4-H Jr. Garden Club, April 26th, 3 - 5pm FCEO

Enjoy Gardening! The landscape is bursting with color, including many shades and tints of green. As we enjoy our gardens, consider the following tips: Avoid working the soil wet because this will compact the soil making it hard for the roots to grow. Wait to prune the crepe myrtle plant until late April to early May. This plant leafs out late. When pruning a branch, the rest of the buds below the pruning site begin grow making them less hardy. Those buds could be damaged by a frost and shorten the height of a plant. Tomatoes do not tolerate a frost. It is best to wait to plant them until after April 20 which is the average frost free date in the spring. However, be prepared to cover the plants with sheets if there is a threat of frost. Free Yourself Through the Practice of Presence

You know the feeling: Partway through a conversation, you realize you have

no idea what the other person is saying, or even what the two of you

are talking about. How can you respond when you haven't been

paying attention? Most of us know that being mindful and paying attention is

important; but, even so, we spend most of our time on "automatic pilot,"

hardly appreciating the wonders around us. Mindfulness is the key: Tuning into the present moment

brings greater vitality to your life, and it frees you to be more fully yourself.

Whomever you are with, give the person your undivided attention. Admire the individual's positive

qualities. Treat the person as if he or she is the most important person in

the world, knowing that the uniqueness of this precious moment will never again present itself. When you are fully alive to the wonder and opportunity of each moment, anxiety dissipates, fresh possibilities arise,

and a peaceful, fundamental happiness emerges. You become more fully available to follow your dreams,

to help others, and to make the world a better place for all of us.

April FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ABOUT CHILD ABUSE 1. Who should report suspected abuse or neglect of a child? Anyone who has reasonable cause to believe that a child is being physically abused, sexually abused, neglected or is dependent. 2. What information does the intake worker need from the reporter? The following basic information is requested: The child's name, sex and approximate age The name of the person believed to have been responsible for the abuse or neglect A description of the injury, neglect or threatened harm to the child The current location of the child; day care or school; home address Any immediate risk to the child OR a worker going out to ensure the child's safety (i.e., guns) The reporter's name and identifying information IF the caller wishes to give that information; anonymous reports are accepted and investigated. 3. Can I as a reporter be sued? The reporter is given civil and criminal immunity from prosecution as long as the reporter acted in good faith. The Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) only releases the name of a reporter upon the order of a judge.

4. Can an investigative worker interview a child without the parent's consent? Yes. By law the worker can interview a child at school or day care or another neutral location without the parent's prior knowledge or consent. But parents should be informed as soon as possible after completing the interview. 5. Can a social worker just take a child out of the home? No. Only the police have that authority if they feel that a child is in imminent danger. A judge can issue an emergency custody order (ECO) for a child to be picked up and held for 72 hours before a hearing. KRS 620.040(3)(b) allows a hospital administrator or a physician treating a child to hold that child without a court order but they must request an ECO within 72 hours. 6. I'm sure the next-door neighbors are abusing their children. What should I do? If you suspect abuse, you should call your local Department for Community Based Services office or the Child Abuse Hotline (877) 597-2331. 7. If I report someone for child abuse, do I have to give my name? No, abuse reports can be made anonymously, however in order to follow up with additional information, callers are encouraged to identify themselves. 8. What happens to children who are being abused if it is reported? Reports of child abuse will be investigated by DCBS. If substantiated, children may be removed from the home and placed in foster care until their family situation can be evaluated and/or corrected. Treatment services are provided, which may make it possible for children to remain in the home. Source: http://chfs.ky.gov/dcbs/dpp/faqchildabuse.htm

Growing Strawberry on Plastic On April 19th, we will be having a strawberry patch walk

starting at 5pm at the Bob Craycraft Farm, next to the Industrial Park in Black Oak. If you are interested in strawberry production this is a good way to have strawberries early. This system is designed to be an annual crop, Plants were planted in Sept. 2017 and will be harvested in Spring, 2018. This system works great tied into the matted row system of strawberries, it will allow an extra two to three weeks to your harvest system. Call the Lewis County Extension Office at 606-796-2732 to reserve your spot!
