Banter Fri: Strictly Dixie, 6-8pm; live
Thursday nights at Hai-ley’s Club have been allabout the shiny plastic
riffs, smooth synths and com-puter-generated beats of the1980s for seven years.
Denton’s busiest DJ, Yeah-def, figures the best way tocelebrate is to spin the greatsof the age tonight in a sort ofanniversary blitz.
The guy behind theturntable — a.k.a. JoeyLiechty — said he picked upwhere some of his peers leftoff. Denton musician andbooking agent Glen Farrisstarted the weekly ’80s dancenight in 2004. Then DJ Gtook the reins.
“DJ G is a walking soniclibrary from the ’80s and tookthat little spark that Glenkicked off and fed the flameinto the longest, most suc-cessful weekly DJ party everin Denton,” Liechty said.“Very skilled dude. He leftNew Year’s 2010, and I’vebeen holding it down sincethen.”
So how does a DJ plan for abusy dance floor? Wearingthe Yeahdef trucker hat,Liechty said it’s a mix oforganization and improvisa-tion.
“I have several ’80s playlistsarranged by genre. I justselect music that I like — andfor the most part, that keepspeople dancing,” Liechty said.“Every once and a while, I’llget a request — and I willusually drop those through-out the night, unless it’s just
dance floor kryptonite.”If you drop by the club
tonight, you could hear theicons of ’80s radio —Madonna, Prince, CultureClub and Wham. Liechty saidhe also drops other 1980sacts into his mix — ScrittiPolitti, Tango, Kajagoogoo, the Beastie Boys, XTC andBB&Q Band.
Patrons do seem to have afavorite, Liechty said.
“People really like ‘Thriller.’They never get tired of thatand ‘Billie Jean.’ I also get alot of requests for Madonnaand ‘The Safety Dance,’” hesaid. “It’s not a guaranteedthing that I will always playthese certain tracks eachThursday, but more oftenthan not, you will see peoplegetting down to MichaelJackson.”
Liechty said he sees some
patrons tipping a hat to thefashion of the era, wearingwhat he calls “early goth”attire, polka dots or neon col-ors. But for the most part, patrons are there to shake iton the dance floor.
The music appeals to awide demographic, andLiechty can get them all mov-ing.
“Last week I had a lady inthere celebrating her 40thwith a 30-something friend,”he said. “They got down, dancing on the floor with thecollege kids, and had a greattime.
“At this point, the musichas been around for morethan 30 years. It appeals toso many groups. I think theoldest I’ve seen in there was adude about 80 years old. Thisold man owned the dancefloor during ‘Hit Me With
Your Best Shot.’ I have videoproof.”
Liechty said the weeklydance party has enjoyed along run because of itsfounders.
“Eighties Night has sur-vived because of the hardwork and knowledge of DJG,” he said. “I’ve been holdingit down in my own style andjust having a blast listening to’80s tunes for the last yearand a half. Bottom line is thatthe ’80s just had loads ofreally fun music that pene-trated different cliques andjust gets people moving, plainand simple.”

You can’t help but tap atoe to the music of theNaples, Fla., quartet
Fake Problems. The melodiesare as sweet and infectious asany Top 40 pop song. Therhythm section blissfullyembraces the rock ethos thatmade the Ramones into icons.
Basically, Fake Problemstranscends the whining droneof mall rock, but doesn’t pre-tend to be anything other thanthe pop-infused “beach punk”it declares itself to be.
The band comes throughDenton on Sunday night atRubber Gloves RehearsalStudios.
The band’s latest releasefrom Side One DummyRecords, Real Ghosts Caughton Tape, doesn’t have a singleturkey on it. Each track feelseffortlessly tuneful withoutselling out.
Guitarist and vocalist ChrisFarren said Real Ghosts, whichcame out in September, is adeparture for the band from itsprevious recording, It’s Great toBe Alive.
“We went so big on It’s Greatto Be Alive. We had a lot oforchestration,” Farren said.“We didn’t want to go sograndiose sound-wise on thenext project. It was a challenge.
“It put us into the situationwhere we had to be writingreally well-put-together songs, and when we practiced and got
Fake Problems, ‘Real’ music
too. “The title of the record is
about the expectations youhave growing up,” Farren said.“When you’re a kid, you have acertain idea of how your life isgoing to turn out, and as youget older, you realize things aregoing to be different. When-ever you see something thatsays ‘real ghosts caught ontape,’ you always take a look atit, even though you know youaren’t going to see what youthink you’re going to see.”

into the studio, we couldn’t justsay that ‘Oh, this doesn’t soundquite right, but we can makethat right and fill it in with theorchestration.’ We had to makesure it was right.”
On “Soulless,” the rhythmsection hearkens back to DianaRoss’ “Can’t Hurry Love” whileFarren propels his boyish, rasp-ing tenor through a bouncingsong about being reanimatedby love. In “ADT,” Farren longsfor some diversion from gar-den-variety boredom and lone-liness. In “Songs for Teenagers,”
Farren passes on the positive-thinking pap that adults give totheir unpredictable teenagers, only he exposes it: “Looking fordrugs in all the wrong places/Felt a change comin’ but Icouldn’t face it/Tried to keepmy cool when I finally made ithome/Had a bloodshot excusefor every lie told/It’s all right,it’s OK …”
Real Ghosts is shot throughwith the stirrings of adoles-cence, something Farren saidmakes sense to him.
“Yeah, I would definitely saythat when you are a teenager, you definitely have more pas-sion for everything,” he said.“What songwriters try to do isrecapture some of those feel-ings. Music helps us recapturethose feelings.”

041411In Cities Can Wait,
Denton indie-pop
outfit the Demigs conducts a
fearless and searching moral
inventory of singer-guitarist
Chris Demiglio’s heart. By the
time we get to the fade-out of
the final track, “Slum Alaska,” a
certain truth is under the spot-
light. The Buddhists were right,
brother. Life is unsatisfactory.
The best you can do is mine
meaning from life with your
bare hands. Oh, and don’t let
the jerks wear you down. The Demigs debuted on the Denton
music scene in 2007 with Yardling. The debut album got a warm receptionfrom regional rock critics, but didn’tcatch on with the local music fanboysand girls.
The band released its second effortthis month. With Cities Can Wait, theDemigs have a moody record narratedby a voice that seems both frustrated bythe confines of polite society and boredby culturally approved coping methods.
“Really, this record was embellishingon the sound we’d already created,”Demiglio said just before taking thestage at Rubber Gloves RehearsalStudios for a recent CD release party.“We wanted to see if we could mix therecord well, and engineer well with theequipment at our disposal.”
Back in the days when the Demigswere promoting Yardling, MarkDemiglio was on drums, AnnieRamage on guitar and vocals, and BradRow on bass. Yardling proved to be adifficult record to make, with the musi-cians slipping into studios to record atall hours of the day and night.
By the time Demiglio was ready toput the songs he was developing ontracks, he had assembled new person-nel. Sid Bledsoe is the bassist, Alex

and Guyton Sanders.
Hastings is on guitar, andGuyton Sanders is the drum-mer. Together, they turnedCities Can Wait into arespectable indie-pop album —with an emphasis on indie. Thegroup had also built a record-ing studio and called in favorsfrom friends to get the bestsound possible.
“It’s not too polished, it’s nottoo raw,” Demiglio said. “All ofus were obsessed with themusic on this one.”
Demiglio is utterly unapolo-getic about the radio-readinessof Cities Can Wait. It’s ripe forthe The Local Show on “TheEdge” KDGE-FM (102.1), andit’s already been spun onKKXT-FM (91.7).
“That was weird,” Demigliosaid. “It was so weird to hearyourself on the radio throughthe phone. It was great though.”
It’s a little too indie for theTop 40 stations that deal inhip-hop and club music, butthe material on Cities Can Waitcould fit into any format friend-ly to the Toadies or Coldplay.
Say what you must, Demigliosaid. He writes pop music.
“Everyone starts to go theirown way when you start talkingabout pop music. It’s pop. I calla spade a spade. If you call itwhat it is, you get pop from thisrecord.”
Sanders isn’t sure he agrees. “I never really considered
what we do pop. Nowadays,
there is a fine line between popand rock. I mean, I don’t playpop rhythms. I’m a rock drum-mer. ‘Black Valley Fight’ is notwhat I consider a pop song. There’s this chaotic thing therein that song. That’s what you doin rock.”
“You write catchy melodies,”Hastings said to Demiglio.“Catchy melodies are what popmusic is. It’s not like pop musicis only this one thing, this onesound.”
Sanders agreed.“That thin line between pop
and rock, where it is, dependson who you are,” Sanders said.
Demiglio isn’t afraid to gazeat his shoes in songs like “Minx”or “Lowly,” letting the reverbfuzz out the guitars and makingroom for some soulful pianowork by contributor KevinThornton. In the album’sstandout track, “Sophisticates& Sedatives,” Demiglio trots outsome “bah-bah-bahs,” (that’sright, the No. 1 vocal beat-keep-er employed by the PartridgeFamily) set to a guitar line thatambles easily along and keepsthe vocals from turning saccha-rine. Demiglio, the chief song-writer of the band, is a deftwriter as it turns out. In
“Sophisticates & Sedatives,”Demiglio exposes the murkycurrent beneath suburbanAmerica with the lyrics:“Third-class musicians with asecondhand religion/were firston the scene to announceanother cataclysm.” The song isset to a sunny, up-tempomelody — a poetic contrast tothe sober lyrics.
Musically and lyrically, Demiglio searches himself as anEveryman, a guy trying to makethe best of what he has withwhat he’s got. On “Gusto,” heobserves a universal yen formore control and less cynicism.“The ballroom is packed/yeah,we’re bringing the guillotineback/I shouldn’t spell it out forher/But I know we go outtogether/go like thieves togeth-er.”
“Slum, Alaska” is insistentand ethereal, and would beutterly at home on Dentonsoloist Robert Gomez’s PineSticks and Phosphorous.
In “Black Valley Fight,” theband assumes the tough-guyposture of a protagonist who’shad enough. Call it a moreAmerican flavor of the ragefound in Muse’s “Uprising.”Demiglio sings: “This is thetime when we show aggres-sion/if anyone is thinking ofmessing/with the likes of us …Shout and simmer/Steep inpiss and vinegar/I don’t thinkthere’s a docket/at the end of
this life.” In other words, scrapfor your reward here on Earth, enjoy the spoils you win by yourown hustle and guile. Demigliodoesn’t push his voice to bemore than it is, and the result isa tenor reminiscent of MichaelStipe on the softer stuff, andlike the Pixies’ Black Francis onthe harder rock.
Denton musician ChrisWilder gets some of the engi-neering credit from the band.He worked with the band onYardling, too.
“I think the songs are better. The recording is better. Theytook their time,” Wilder said. “Ithink they’re getting poppier. They are doing catchy melodiesand catchy hooks. I like thatabout what they’re doing. It’s agood vocal melody, you know?Don’t be afraid to put a harmo-ny on there.”
Pianist Kevin Thornton saidhe was recruited to play key-boards by Hastings.
“I think what they wantedfrom me on this record waspiano work that’s like NickyHopkins from the RollingStones, and Tom Petty. I tried notto overplay. For a rock band, theydidn’t need Bob Seger. Theywanted something different.”
Thornton said the bandstretched its resources.
“They have limited resources, you know? They were recordingon a budget, like a lot of peopledo around here,” Thornton said.
“Denton has two things: It has aculture — and that goes beyondart and music — ... and they’vegot talent here. These guysmade use of both. I think itwent pretty well.”
Brandon Van Noy helpedrecord the album and guidedDemiglio through the comput-er software.
“Yardling was the reason Igot involved,” Van Noy said. “Iknow Chris is going for a biggersound, a wider sound. Yardlingwas a very small record, almosta Strokes record. It was verypointed. On this one, he want-ed it to sound bigger. I think hepulled it off. I think when youhave more space between thelayers, you have more soundcoming at you.”
By the album’s close, thoselayers present a confession fromDemiglio. Every man is indeedan island. Emotional bridgesare entirely flammable. CitiesCan Wait was written over sixyears’ time, as Demiglio was let-ting go of a relationship andconsidering a major change.
“It’s sort of a secular vs. non-secular record,” he said. “CitiesCan Wait was about not mov-ing to Seattle. It was aboutdeciding to stick where I wasand do what I needed to do.”

By Boo AllenFilm Critic
The Conspirator begins inApril 1865. But it’s nosecret that everything in
the new drama from directorRobert Redford refers directlyto current events in this country.
James Solomon’s story andscreenplay about what followedAbraham Lincoln’s assassina-tion becomes a mystery as wellas a morality play under Red-ford’s capable direction. Themystery comes not only inwhether Mary Surratt (RobinWright) was involved in theconspiracy behind Lincoln’smurder, but also in whether theU.S. government acted legallyin pursuing and prosecutingher.
But, if officials acted illegally, not to mention ignobly, wouldthe still-suffering union recover
from such injustices? More bla-tantly, the trial replays similar-sounding arguments about thegovernment’s assaults on theConstitution and its suspensionof civil rights after the Sept. 11,2001, terrorist attacks.
Solomon’s dialogue can beheard both as the infuriatingdenials of legalities in 1865 aswell as the lingering, ongoingdebate over how much officialpower can be exerted in a timeof perceived war.
In The Conspirator, as in his-tory, which the film faithfullyfollows, those guilty in the con-spiracy were found and execut-ed. Surratt’s son John (JohnnySimmons) knew the men in-volved and often met with themin his mother’s boardinghouse.
Through this appearance ofacquaintance, Surratt wasarrested and tried as a conspir-ator. Redford uses the trial toflash back to reveal the plan-ning leading up to the murder-ous event.
The Constitution mandatesthat Surratt must be tried incourt, so first, Sen. ReverdyJohnson (Tom Wilkinson) rail-roads recent Union officerFrederick Aiken (James Mc-Avoy) into defending her. In thetrial, a military tribunal withhandpicked judge advocates, injustices arise so blatant and
severe that it’s easy to under-stand the allusions to today.
On the sidelines, bellicoseSecretary of War Edwin Stanton(Kevin Kline) manipulates thejudges, restricts the witnessesand virtually arranges for theobvious verdict he believes willgive balm to a country strug-gling to reunify.
Newton Thomas Sigel’s in-genious cinematography, with adeft use of light and shadowwith hazy naturalistic hues, transforms the courtroom intoa 19th-century fantasyland. And Kalina Ivanov’s productiondesigns convey the simplicity ofthe settings, something thatcould not be said about the cir-cumstances.

OPENING FRIDAYAtlas Shrugged: Part I Dagny Tag-
gart (Taylor Schilling), a powerful rail-
road executive, tries to keep her busi-
ness afloat while society crumbles
around her. Based on the novel by
Ayn Rand. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes.
In a Better World (1/2) In this
surprise Oscar winner for best for-
eign language film, Danish director
Susanne Bier posits that individual
conflicts can be as harmful as war.
Or something like that. The point is
left somewhat elusive in the story of
a doctor in a war-torn part of Africa
who returns home to Denmark, and
his young son who takes a different
approach to conflict. Rated R, 119
minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. —
Boo Allen
Miral () Muddled, heavy-handed
drama from director Julian Schnabel
(The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
tries to combine the stories of four
women from different generations
struggling with decades of Israeli-
Palestinian conflict. The film, based
on a memoir by Rula Jebreal, isn’t
shy about taking sides, but the film-
making lacks conviction. The stylistic
touches are undermined by an auda-
cious but didactic screenplay. The
cast includes Hiam Abbass, Frieda
Pinto and Willem Dafoe. Rated PG-13,
112 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas.
— Todd Jorgenson
Peep World (1/2) An interesting
cast is squandered in this broad
ensemble comedy about four sib-
lings who reunite to celebrate their
father’s 70th birthday just as one of
them (Ben Schwartz) has written a
best-selling book that exposes vari-
ous family secrets. The premise is
thin and the movie feels more like a
scatterbrained sitcom filled with all
kinds of bickering and uneven shifts
between serious drama and low-
brow gags. Also stars Rainn Wilson,
Michael C. Hall and Sarah Silverman.
Not rated, 79 minutes. At the Texas
Theatre in Dallas. — T.J.
Rio (1/2) The latest 3-D animated
comedy from director Carlos
Saldanha (Ice Age 2) is an energetic
if formulaic talking-animal saga
about a rare bird (voiced by Jesse
Eisenberg) from small-town Minne-
sota who ventures to Brazil with his
owner (Anne Hathaway) to ensure
the survival of his species. Along the
way, creatures both good and evil
cross their path. There are plenty of
colorful characters to entertain the
kids, even if it feels like we’ve seen
most of this song-and-dance before.
Rated G, 96 minutes. — T.J.
Rubber (1/2) You haven’t seen it
all until you’ve seen this ridiculous
but captivating lark about an inani-
mate tire — that’s right, like those on
your car — named Robert that turns
into a serial killer at a rundown
motel. Not much about it makes any
sense, of course, and that’s part of
the subversive idea, as the film
states. Grisly and hilarious, it’s cer-
tainly not for all tastes, and director
Quentin Dupieux almost dares you to
hate it. But as pretentious as that
sounds, it’s actually kind of clever.
Rated R, 82 minutes. At the Texas
Theatre in Dallas. — T.J.
Scream 4 () After a decade or
so since the last installment of this
entertaining horror-satire series, the
horror returns to Woodsboro. New
faces (Emma Roberts, Marley
Shelton) blend with old faces (Neve
Campbell, Courtney Cox, David
Arquette), as well as director Wes
Craven and creator and writer Kevin
Williamson, to deliver more of the
same frights and faux frights. Still
fun, still self-referential. Rated R, 111
minutes. — B.A.
