Appendix IV Wireless Statistics
WVLS Statistics Dashboard – dashboard.wvls.org
1) Select “Summary” Tab
2) Select Library, or Library Grouping
a. All Libraries, HQ and Branches, By County
3) Select Date Range
4) Select “Wireless” stat type
For 2016, WVLS and IFLS implemented a new Statistics Dashboard to aggregate and
present statistical data from the WVLS ILS (V-Cat on Sierra) and managed wireless service
(Open-Mesh with Cloudtrax). The 2016 year was one of service “shake down,” and
although there were some unexpected disruptions in wireless statistics collection, was
generally a successful launch.
The dashboard can be used to visualize various statistics collected from ILS, OverDrive,
and Wi-Fi systems managed by WVLS. The focus of this appendix is Wi-Fi. The dashboard
can be used to view statistical data for all libraries, individual libraries, libraries and
respective branches, or by county (found at the bottom of the sites list - #2 above). Date
ranges can be selected, though the Summary view currently displays best with twelve
month ranges.
At this time, the dashboard service is not receiving session data from:
Granton Community Library – Uses school’s Wi-Fi
Marathon County Public Library – Self Manages Wi-Fi
Wabeno Public Library – Self Manages Wi-Fi
Withee Public Library – Self Manages Wi-Fi
In 2016, we recorded 688,995 sessions across 21 libraries which utilized the WVLS
Managed Wi-Fi service. This is an undercount, as there were a few unexpected
disruptions in statistics collection, primarily due to automated firmware update
mechanisms. Regardless, the 2016 collection is quite robust and sets an accurate
baseline for most months across most libraries against which future data can be
compared to analyze trends.
During 2017 we expect fewer unplanned disruptions. We are planning a migration from
Open-Mesh equipment and the Cloudtrax management portal to Ubiquiti Unifi
equipment and management portal. Maintaining Wi-Fi services and collection of
statistics will remain a priority in this project. We hope to work with the four libraries
which are not currently reporting data to extend managed Wi-Fi services to them, or to
receive data from their equipment to include in the Dashboard. Wabeno Public Library is
not currently subscribed to the WVLS WAN or Technology Services, but we should be able
to employ a Wi-Fi service model with them if there is interest.
In 2017 we hope to work with IFLS to expand the utility of the Statistics Dashboard. One
key feature would be the ability to collect raw data from equipment even if an unplanned
event occurs which causes that data to be reported in an unexpected format. This would
allow the LEAN WI Technology Team to manually inject accurate statistics to the primary
database. Another key feature would be the ability to automatically estimate usage (in a
uniform and trusted manner for all libraries) for periods of missed data collection.
Another valuable feature would be the presentation of totals in the specific service views.

baseline for most months across most libraries against which future data can be
compared to analyze trends.
